What you are setting up
Beyond Ascension is an action-focused adventure and exploration modpack by blueversal for Minecraft 1.20.1 on Forge. Its project description advertises more than 500 mods, epic bosses, dragons, magic, quests, multiplayer support, more than 100 new mobs, and more than 500 new structures. That scale explains why a normal vanilla server procedure is not enough: the server and every client must load a compatible mod set and configuration.

The project page recommends allocating 8 GB of RAM to the client. That is not a published server minimum, player-capacity guarantee, or benchmark. Do not use the client recommendation as proof that a server with 8 GB will support a particular number of players. Server memory needs depend on the world, exploration, loaded chunks, automation, and concurrent players.

Choose self-hosting or managed hosting
Both approaches can run the same Forge pack. The difference is who operates the machine, network, storage, and recovery process.
#1 Best Overall
- DELUXE COLLECTION — Includes Minecraft: Java & Bedrock Edition, three Bedrock add-ons, three exclusive Character Creator items, and 700 Minecoins.
- CREATE YOUR WORLD — Build whatever you imagine in an infinite world that’s unique in every playthrough.
- EXPLORE AND CRAFT — Discover biomes, resources, and mobs, then craft your way through a sandbox world filled with surprises.
- SURVIVE THE ADVENTURE — Face mysterious foes, travel across exciting landscapes, and venture into perilous dimensions.
- PLAY TOGETHER — Play cross-platform with friends in Bedrock Edition on console, mobile, and PC, or join community servers in Java Edition on PC, Mac, and Linux. Online console multiplayer requires a platform-specific subscription (sold separately).
| Decision area | Self-hosted server | Managed host |
|---|---|---|
| Initial setup | Install Java and Forge, assemble folders, remove client mods, configure properties, and launch locally. | Upload or install the pack through the provider’s workflow, then configure the instance in its control panel. |
| Networking | You handle the router, firewall, port forwarding, changing public addresses, and connectivity tests. | The provider normally supplies a reachable server address; you still configure access controls and troubleshoot account-side settings. |
| Ongoing administration | You perform pack updates, Java or Forge maintenance, restarts, log review, backups, and world recovery. | The provider operates the underlying machine and usually offers restart, file, console, and backup tools, but you remain responsible for pack compatibility. |
| Control | Maximum control over files, startup arguments, operating system, storage, and backup destination. | Convenient controls, with limits determined by the provider’s panel and plan. |
| Persistent availability | Requires your computer, power, and internet connection to remain available. | Designed for a persistent server without leaving a home computer running. |
| Player capacity | Must be determined from your hardware and observation; no official Beyond Ascension capacity figure is published. | Choose resources with the provider and increase them if logs, tick times, or memory use show pressure; no pack-specific capacity was established. |
| Support | You diagnose Java, Forge, operating-system, and network failures. | The pack author specifically recommends Kinetic for hosted-server problems, but pricing, capacity, support quality, and affiliate terms are not established here. |
Self-host if you are comfortable administering a modded Java server and want complete control. A managed host is more practical when the group needs a persistent world but nobody wants to maintain a home server or router. Whichever option you choose, keep an independent copy of the world and configuration files.
Prepare the files and software
Install Java 17
Install a Java 17 runtime that your operating system can launch from the command line. Confirm that Java 17, rather than another installed major version, is the runtime used by the Forge installer and the server startup script. A mismatched Java version can fail before Forge begins loading mods.

Download the client profile and pack files for the same release you intend to run. The files page currently lists Beyond Ascension-Ver2.9.3 for Minecraft 1.20.1 Forge, uploaded October 14, 2026. Because release listings are volatile, compare the filename, Minecraft version, and loader immediately before installing. Do not mix a 2.9.3 client with an older server directory unless the author explicitly documents that combination.
Install Forge as a server
- Run the Forge 47.4.22 installer for Minecraft 1.20.1.
- Choose Install server, not the client-only installation option.
- Select a new, dedicated directory for the server. Avoid placing the server inside the client’s launcher-managed instance folder; keeping the two directories separate makes it easier to back up and troubleshoot.
- Let the installer create the Forge server files, then close the installer.
The exact directory name is your choice. In the steps below, “server directory” means the folder selected in the installer.
Build the Beyond Ascension server directory
Copy the four pack folders
From the matching Beyond Ascension client profile, copy these folders into the Forge server directory:
Rank #2
- ULTIMATE COLLECTION — Includes Minecraft: Java & Bedrock Edition, five Bedrock add-ons, five exclusive Character Creator items, and 1000 Minecoins.
Online console multiplayer requires a platform-specific subscription (sold separately).
configkubejsdefault configmods
Merge the folders with the files created by Forge rather than deleting the Forge installation. If the operating system asks whether to overwrite files, preserve the pack’s versions of files that share the same path. The purpose is to give the server the same gameplay configuration, scripts, defaults, and mod jars expected by the client.
Do not copy client-only content blindly
The client profile contains visual, interface, camera, and performance helpers that have no place on a dedicated server. Leaving one of those jars in the server’s mods directory can produce a missing-class error, a dedicated-server crash, or a client/server mismatch. Remove the client-only files named in the pack guide after copying the folders.
Remove the client-only mods
The following names are explicitly identified in the guide as client-side removals. Remove the corresponding jar files from the server’s mods folder, matching the exact filename and version present in your release:
| Named mod | Why it belongs on the client, not the dedicated server |
|---|---|
| AAA particles | Client particle rendering. |
| BadOptimizations | Client-side optimization hooks. |
| BetterF3 | Replaces or enhances the client debug screen. |
| blur-forge | Client interface visual effects. |
| CraftPresence | Presence integration for the local game client. |
| entityculling-forge | Client rendering and visibility decisions. |
| Oculus | Client shader support. |
| Rubidium extras | Client rendering/performance additions. |
| ShoulderSurfing-Forge | Client camera and third-person controls. |
| visuality-forge | Client visual effects. |
| YungsMenuTweaks | Client menu and interface changes. |
This is the set of names supplied in the published instructions, not a promise that every release has the same complete list. Modpack authors can add, rename, or remove client-only jars between versions. Before starting a new release, compare your mods folder with the current Beyond Ascension server instructions and remove every item identified there. Do not remove gameplay, library, world-generation, or server utility mods merely because they sound unfamiliar.
Keep a record of what you removed. If a later update changes the required server set, you can restore the original client profile without guessing which files were deleted.

Configure server.properties and ServerCore
Enable flight
Open server.properties in a plain-text editor and enable flight as directed by the pack author. In the standard Minecraft properties file this is the allow-flight setting. Save the file as plain text; do not let a word processor add formatting or a second filename extension.
Disable the tick-time shutdown limit
Set the server tick-time value to -1, as specified in the guide. In a standard properties file this is represented by max-tick-time=-1. This is an optional tuning instruction from the author, not evidence that the pack has a guaranteed performance level. Disabling the limit can prevent an automatic shutdown during a long tick, but it can also leave a severely overloaded server running instead of stopping visibly. Monitor logs and responsiveness after making the change.
Change render distance in both locations
If you change render distance, edit the relevant value in server.properties and also update the ServerCore configuration under the server’s config folder. Changing only one location can make the other setting override your choice or make troubleshooting confusing. The exact ServerCore key can vary by pack release, so use the key already present in your installed configuration rather than creating a guessed one.
Make a backup before tuning
- Stop the server before copying or editing configuration files.
- Keep an untouched copy of the original
server.propertiesand ServerCore configuration. - Change one setting at a time so a new crash or lag spike has an identifiable cause.
Start the server
- Open the Forge server directory.
- Run
run.baton Windows. - Watch the console while Forge loads the mod list, scripts, registries, and world data.
- If Minecraft creates an EULA acceptance file, follow the displayed requirement before attempting another startup.
- After the server reaches its ready state, stop it cleanly once and make a backup of the generated world and configuration files.
Use the console output as your first diagnostic. A failure that names a missing class or a client-only mod usually indicates an incorrect removal or an incomplete folder copy. A failure that reports a missing dependency or version conflict usually means the server and client files are from different Beyond Ascension releases.

The pack author leaves port forwarding to the administrator. For a home server, configure the router to forward the Minecraft server port to the computer running Forge, allow the Java process through the operating-system firewall, and give friends the correct public address or hostname. Router menus differ by manufacturer, so use your router and operating-system documentation for the exact screens.

- The Nether and all its inhabitants. Fight Ghasts and make friends with Pigmen
- Cross platform play for up to five players between Pocket Edition and Windows 10
- Revamped touch controls, controller support, and a controller mapping screen
- Enhanced Weather effects! Accumulating snow and more
- Reserve a local address for the server computer so a reboot does not send forwarding to a different device.
- Allow inbound traffic only for the service you intend to expose.
- Test from outside your home network; testing only from the host computer can hide forwarding errors.
- Do not publish administrative credentials or expose unrelated services on the same address.
- If your internet provider uses carrier-grade NAT, ordinary port forwarding may not work; use a provider or network arrangement that supplies an reachable endpoint.
Networking is independent of the modpack. A perfectly assembled Forge directory can still be unreachable if the router, firewall, or public address is wrong.
Install the matching client profile
- Open CurseForge and go to Browse or Discover.
- Select Beyond Ascension and choose the compatible Minecraft version and Forge loader shown for the server release.
- Install the profile, then launch it from My Modpacks.
- Have every player install the same Beyond Ascension release rather than assembling individual mods manually.
- Connect only after the server is running the matching release and has completed startup.
A client with a different mod jar, configuration, script, or pack version can be rejected even when both installations say Minecraft 1.20.1. When diagnosing a mismatch, compare the profile version first, then the mods, config, kubejs, and default config contents.

Pack-specific compatibility rules
Do not update individual mods
The author advises against updating individual mods. A newer jar can change APIs, dependencies, world data, recipes, or configuration assumptions. Update the complete Beyond Ascension release only when the pack author publishes a compatible version.
Do not add OptiFine
The guide specifically says not to add OptiFine. Treat the pack’s tested Forge and rendering stack as a unit. Adding another renderer or shader solution can create duplicate functionality, startup crashes, or visual differences that are difficult to reproduce for other players.
Disable “Skip Mojang Launcher” in CurseForge
The author reports issues when CurseForge’s Skip Mojang Launcher option is enabled. Turn that option off for this pack before testing a launch. If a launcher update changes the wording or location of the setting, look for the equivalent option that bypasses the Mojang launcher and leave it disabled.
Best Value
- Play and share with friends on console, mobile and Windows 10
- discover community creations in the new in-game store
- access new mini games and game modes through servers
Restart a stuck load
If loading appears stuck, restart the game before changing files. A one-time stall does not prove that a mod is broken. If the same stage fails repeatedly, record the last console or crash-report error and then check release matching, Java 17, and the client-only removal list.

Mac-specific Spark advice
The pack instructions tell Mac users to remove Spark when it causes problems. Apply that advice only when Spark is present and the Mac-specific issue occurs; do not remove unrelated diagnostic or gameplay mods without a documented reason.
Hosted-server failures
For a hosted instance that cannot start or remains inaccessible, contact the hosting provider after confirming that the selected Minecraft version, Forge version, pack release, and uploaded folders match. The provider can inspect machine-level logs and panel settings that are unavailable to a home administrator.
Server-pack downloads and version warnings
A historical CurseForge file page lists Beyond Ascension-Ver1.5.3-[Server-Pack].zip for Forge/Minecraft 1.20.1, uploaded July 10, 2025. That historical archive does not establish that a separately maintained server-pack download exists for Beyond Ascension-Ver2.9.3. Do not install the old server pack over a current 2.9.3 server, and do not promise a current server-pack archive unless the files page explicitly lists one when you deploy.
If a current server archive is published later, verify its Minecraft version, Forge version, upload date, and included configuration before using it. Otherwise, follow the documented folder-copy method and remove the current release’s client-only mods.
Backups, updates, and routine administration
Back up before every change
- Stop the server cleanly.
- Copy the world directory,
config, kubejs, default config, mods, server.properties, and Forge startup files to storage separate from the live directory. - Label the backup with the Beyond Ascension version and date.
- Keep at least one backup that is not mounted on the server computer.
Update as a complete release
When the author publishes a new pack version, read its release notes and server instructions, make a restorable backup, and create a separate test directory if possible. Replace the coordinated pack files rather than selectively updating jars. Confirm that every player updates their CurseForge profile to the same release before reopening the world.
Watch for resource pressure
Use server logs and in-game responsiveness to identify long ticks, repeated errors, failed chunk generation, or memory exhaustion. The published 8 GB figure is client guidance only, so select server memory and player limits based on observed behavior and your host’s capacity rather than presenting an unsupported minimum or player count.
Quick Recap
Common failure symptoms and fixes
| Symptom | Most useful checks |
|---|---|
| Forge refuses to start immediately | Verify Java 17, Forge 47.4.22, and that the installer was run with Install server. |
| Dedicated-server crash names a rendering or interface class | Remove the client-only jars named by the current pack guide; check for additional client-only entries in that release’s instructions. |
| Players receive a mod-list or registry mismatch | Compare the exact Beyond Ascension release and the four copied folders on server and client. Do not update one mod independently. |
| Client hangs while launching | Disable CurseForge’s Skip Mojang Launcher option, restart, and then inspect the crash log if the hang repeats. |
| Mac installation fails with Spark present | Follow the author’s Mac guidance and remove Spark, then retry with a backup available. |
| Friends cannot connect but the local host can | Check the server computer’s local address, router forwarding, firewall permission, and public address from an external network. |
| World becomes slow or shuts down during heavy activity | Review logs, confirm the render-distance settings in both locations, and reduce load or increase resources based on observed evidence; no official capacity number is published. |
| Hosted panel reports a generic startup failure | Confirm the host is using Minecraft 1.20.1, Forge 47.4.22, Java 17, and the current pack files, then provide the provider with the complete startup log. |
