You can make stronger iPhone photos and videos with the Camera and Photos apps already on your phone. Start with a clean, steady frame; adjust focus or exposure only when the automatic result needs help; choose a recording mode that fits the scene; then make restrained edits. The exact controls vary by iPhone model and iOS version, so use the options that appear on your device.
Start with the frame, not the settings
Before changing a camera setting, decide what the viewer should notice. Move distractions out of the background or change your angle to simplify the frame. Hold the phone with both hands or brace it against something stable already nearby when you can. These basic choices can help a shot look more intentional without adding equipment.

By default, iPhone Camera sets focus and exposure automatically. Apple also says face detection balances exposure across multiple faces. If the camera has focused on the wrong thing, tap the subject on screen to move focus there. Apple’s guide to iPhone camera tools describes these controls.

Tap the important subject, then adjust the on-screen exposure control up or down if the image looks too bright or too dark for your intent. There is no universal ideal exposure adjustment: the right result depends on the scene and the look you want. Treat the control as a correction, not a required step for every shot.

If you need to reframe without the camera changing focus or brightness, touch and hold the focus area until AE/AF Lock appears. This locks focus and exposure while you compose. It is useful when the scene might otherwise cause the camera to meter differently as you move the frame.
Choose a video mode for movement and light
Action mode for active movement
On supported iPhones, Action mode is an in-camera stabilization option for moving footage. Apple says it works best in bright light and has a maximum capture resolution of 2.8K. If the scene is dim, compare ordinary Video mode, a steadier stance, or brighter available light; Action mode is not a guarantee against blur or image noise. Cinematic mode for subject-led clips
On supported models, Cinematic mode can identify a subject and shift focus to create a depth effect. You can tap a subject or lock focus while recording. Use it when the separation between subject and background helps the story; the effect is a stylistic choice, not a default improvement for every clip. Availability depends on the iPhone model.

Match resolution and frame rate to the finished video
Higher resolution and faster frame rates can be useful when they suit the motion and delivery format, but they create larger files. Apple explicitly notes that “Faster frame rates and higher resolutions result in larger video files.” Choose settings for where the video will be viewed and how much motion you need to capture, then check available storage before a long recording. There is no single best setting for every project.

On supported devices, resolution and frame rate can be changed in the Camera interface or in Settings. Photo resolution choices and the “Prioritize Faster Shooting” control also vary by model; the latter modifies processing to enable more rapid captures. Use these options only if they appear on your phone and address a real need. Apple’s video guide and camera tools guide explain the supported controls.
Make small edits in Photos
In Photos, use Adjust to refine light and color. Apple lists Exposure, Brilliance, and Highlights among the available adjustments; filters and other tools are available as well. Make one purposeful correction at a time and compare the result with the original. If an edit makes skin, skies, or other familiar colors look unnatural, ease it back.

For a Cinematic clip, you can change the focus subject, adjust depth of field, or turn off the effect after recording, on supported devices. That gives you a way to revise the look if the automatic focus choice or depth effect does not suit the finished clip. See Apple’s instructions for editing Cinematic video. Camera’s Preserve Settings options can retain selected choices instead of resetting them. Apple lists exposure adjustment for iPhone 11 and later and Action mode on supported models, among other options. In Settings, open Camera and then Preserve Settings to review what your device offers. Preserve a choice if you repeatedly want it; otherwise, leaving it to reset can help avoid carrying an unsuitable setup into a different scene. See Apple’s guide to saving camera settings.

A quick decision guide

Apple’s controls are model- and software-dependent, so a setting described in a guide may not appear on every iPhone. Check the Camera and Photos options on your own device before planning around a particular mode or resolution.
