If an Echo says “Sorry, something went wrong,” there is no single confirmed cause or guaranteed fix. Start with simple device and connection checks, then note whether the message is spoken by the Echo, appears only in the Alexa app, or happens only with one skill. That distinction helps you avoid treating an app or service problem as a broken Echo.
First, identify where the error appears
- Spoken by the Echo on several ordinary requests: Begin with power, internet, mute, placement, restart, and update checks.
- Shown only on an Alexa app screen: Focus on the app and phone rather than changing Echo settings first.
- Limited to one skill, music service, or smart-home integration: Check that service and its account connection; the Echo itself may still be working.
The similar phrase “I’m not sure what went wrong” appears in a separate support report; it does not establish that the two phrases have the same cause. Amazon’s guidance for this exact error is a set of basic checks, not a ranked or validated eight-step cure.

Use the Echo’s supplied power adapter

Confirm the Echo and phone have internet access
Check that both the Echo and the phone running the Alexa app can reach the internet. Amazon staff put it plainly: “Make sure you have an active internet connection.” If the Echo seems to have a network problem, check whether it is within router range and whether nearby sources of interference or network congestion could be affecting it. Reduce noise and improve placement

Restart the Echo
Unplug it, wait briefly, and plug it back in. An Amazon staff reply about a slow Echo Show 15 suggests leaving that model unplugged for 30 seconds, but that timer is tied to that particular context, not established as a universal requirement for every Echo. Amazon staff guidance, April 23, 2024.

Check for software updates
Ask the Echo to check for software updates, and check your phone’s app store for an Alexa app update. Echo Show owners may also have an update option in the device settings. Use app- or skill-specific troubleshooting if the error is isolated
If the message appears only in the Alexa app, try restarting the phone, force-closing the app, and checking for an update; reinstalling the app is another option if simpler steps do not help. If only one third-party skill or service fails, check that service’s status and account connection, then contact its provider if the issue persists. Amazon’s developer documentation discusses specific music-skill failures involving invalid responses, missing Lambda triggers, distribution settings, and skill ID configuration. What the error does—and does not—tell you
The phrase is generic, so it does not identify a failed component by itself. If other Alexa functions work, or the requested action completes despite the message, do not assume the Echo is broken: the wording may reflect a service response or another platform-side error. Amazon’s operational metrics documentation describes tracking skill performance, but it does not provide a consumer diagnosis for an individual Echo.
