Best YouTube Live Frame Rate for a Pre-Recorded Animation Loop

For a pre-recorded animation loop, match the YouTube Live frame rate to the authored source. Use 30 fps as a practical baseline for new low-motion loops and 60 fps when the animation truly benefits from it.

Use the frame rate the animation was authored or rendered at. For a new, mostly low-motion loop, 30 fps is a sensible practical default; choose 60 fps when the motion benefits from it and the animation contains 60 distinct frames per second. YouTube supports live streams up to 60 fps, but it does not prescribe a special rate for animation loops.

Choose the frame rate that preserves the animation

YouTube’s upload guidance says content should be encoded and uploaded at the same frame rate at which it was recorded. Its list of common rates includes 24, 25, 30, 48, 50 and 60 fps. That guidance is about preserving source timing; it does not say that converting a lower-rate animation to 60 fps creates smoother original motion. YouTube’s recommended upload encoding settings and live encoder settings provide the relevant limits and settings.

When 30 fps is a good choice

For a new loop with little movement or slow, simple animation, 30 fps is a reasonable production default. This is a practical recommendation, not a YouTube requirement or a measured finding that 30 fps is ideal for every animation. If your existing render is 24, 25 or another common rate and looks right, keep that rate rather than changing it just to choose a larger number.

When to consider 60 fps

Use 60 fps if fast, fluid or finely timed movement visibly benefits from more temporal samples—and if the source animation was authored or rendered with 60 distinct frames per second. A 60 fps output made from a 30 fps source may repeat or interpolate frames; it does not restore motion detail that was never present. Higher frame rates also change the bitrate target, so check YouTube’s recommendation for the selected resolution and codec before going live.

Compare 30 fps and 60 fps for your loop

Check 30 fps 60 fps
Motion A practical baseline for a newly rendered loop with little or slow movement. Consider it when fast or finely timed movement benefits from more temporal samples.
Source fidelity Use it when the animation is authored or rendered at 30 fps; preserve another source rate when appropriate. Best supported when the animation contains 60 distinct frames per second, rather than duplicated or interpolated frames.
YouTube live support Supported; YouTube’s live guidance allows up to 60 fps. Supported; it is YouTube’s stated live frame-rate ceiling.
1080p bitrate recommendation AV1/H.265: 10 Mbps; H.264: 14 Mbps. AV1/H.265: 12 Mbps; H.264: 17 Mbps.
720p bitrate recommendation AV1/H.265: 6 Mbps; H.264: 8 Mbps. AV1/H.265: 6 Mbps; H.264: 8 Mbps.

The bitrate figures are YouTube’s current live-ingestion recommendations, accessed in 2026—not guarantees of a particular viewer experience. Check the current encoder settings table for your exact codec and resolution; platform recommendations can change.

Set up the stream around your chosen frame rate

  1. Check the animation export. Find the frame rate at which the loop was authored or rendered. Keep it when possible; do not convert a lower-rate source to 60 fps solely to select the highest available setting.
  2. Choose the live resolution and codec. Use YouTube’s bitrate table for that combination. For example, at 1080p and 30 fps, the cited table recommends 10 Mbps for AV1/H.265 or 14 Mbps for H.264; at 1080p and 60 fps, it recommends 12 Mbps or 17 Mbps respectively. At 720p, it lists 6 Mbps for AV1/H.265 and 8 Mbps for H.264 at either frame rate.
  3. Set the encoder frame rate to match the source. YouTube permits up to 60 fps. Its encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1, and recommends RTMPS. Encoder menus vary, so match the corresponding frame-rate and codec options available in your software.
  4. Set keyframes every two seconds. YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. At 30 fps, two seconds is 60 frames; if you change frame rate, keep the interval at two seconds of time.
  5. Check upload capacity and test before the real stream. YouTube recommends checking upload capacity with a speed test and testing the stream in advance. Include audio and movement similar to the actual broadcast, then inspect the Live Control Room preview and stream health.

For encoder setup and stream-key workflow, see YouTube’s guide to creating a live stream with an encoder. Keep the stream key private; use the key associated with the scheduled or active YouTube stream in your encoder.

  • Ergonomic stand allows for tilt, pivot and height adjustments to maximize gaming comfort

Check the loop and YouTube stream before going live

  • Watch the loop through a full cycle to confirm the seam is clean and the selected frame rate does not introduce judder, duplicated-looking motion or timing problems.
  • Test the same resolution, codec and frame rate planned for the live stream. Confirm the encoder can sustain the matching bitrate and that your upload connection has headroom.
  • Check audio as well as video, even if the animation is intended to be quiet; verify the intended soundtrack or silence in the preview.
  • Review YouTube’s current live-streaming and copyright requirements for the material you plan to broadcast. A technically healthy encoder stream does not establish that you have rights to the video or audio.

Troubleshoot common frame-rate and stream problems

The 60 fps output does not look smoother

Check the source export. If it contains fewer than 60 distinct frames per second, setting the encoder to 60 fps cannot add genuine motion detail. Return the output to the authored rate, or render the animation at 60 fps if the movement warrants it.

The stream buffers or reports poor health

Compare the encoder’s configured bitrate with YouTube’s recommendation for the selected resolution, codec and frame rate. Confirm the upload connection can sustain it, run a speed test, and test the stream before the scheduled broadcast. If necessary, lower the resolution or choose a supported combination with a bitrate your connection can maintain.

The video looks uneven or the loop timing drifts

Make sure the encoder and exported animation use the same frame rate. Avoid converting between rates without a production reason, and inspect the loop in the Live Control Room preview before relying on it for a long broadcast.

The stream disconnects or fails to ingest

Check encoder output, network stability, stream-key selection and YouTube’s Live Control Room stream health. YouTube’s live streaming error messages page lists platform error guidance. Restart or reconnect using the correct stream key, then verify the preview and health status before considering the stream restored.
