Rank Math, Yoast SEO, All in One SEO, and SEOPress each offer a different mix of SEO controls and integrations. Choose by the features your site actually needs, whether they are included in the version you plan to use, and how well the plugin fits your existing setup—not by installation counts or promises of higher rankings.
How to choose a WordPress SEO plugin
Start with the work you need the plugin to do. For one site, that may mean editing page titles and descriptions and generating an XML sitemap. Another may need structured data, redirects, WooCommerce features, analytics integrations, or help moving settings from an existing plugin.

- Metadata and content workflow: Check how the plugin lets you manage search titles and descriptions and whether its content-analysis tools fit your publishing process.
- Schema and sitemaps: Confirm which structured-data controls and sitemap options are included in the version you intend to use.
- Redirects and broken URLs: If you regularly change URLs, check whether redirect management and 404 monitoring are available and whether they suit your workflow.
- Integrations: Verify compatibility with the editor, page builder, store, and analytics tools your site already uses.
- Migration: If you are switching plugins, look for import support and plan to verify important settings and page output after the change.
- Free and paid boundaries: Compare the exact features available at the license level you will use. A feature mentioned on a plugin page may not be included in every version.
A plugin’s content score or marketing language about rankings is not evidence that it will improve search positions. The feature descriptions below document available tools, not independently measured ranking gains.
Four established options to compare
This is a feature-based shortlist, not a hands-on test or a ranking of SEO performance. WordPress.org’s directory is useful for confirming that plugins are available; its installation figures indicate directory-reported adoption, not quality or search results. The directory lists many other SEO plugins as well.
#1 Best Overall
| Plugin | What its listing describes | Directory-reported adoption | Potential fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rank Math | Schema types, XML sitemaps, content analysis, redirects, a 404 monitor, internal-link suggestions, local and WooCommerce SEO features, and import support for other SEO plugins. | 4+ million active installations; listing showed version 1.0.280, updated October 6, 2026. Figures and version are from the WordPress.org listing. | Consider it if you want a broad set of controls, including redirect and 404 tools, or need the listed local, commerce, or import features. |
| Yoast SEO | Structured data; the listing presents the plugin as free with paid commercial upgrades. | 10+ million active installations, as reported by WordPress.org’s listing accessed October 7, 2026. | Consider it if its metadata and structured-data workflow meets your needs and you are comfortable checking which upgrades apply to your use case. |
| All in One SEO | Search Console integration, multilingual XML sitemaps, WooCommerce SEO, IndexNow, support for multiple page builders, and migration from other SEO plugins. | 2+ million active installations, as reported in WordPress.org’s directory figures. | Worth examining for a site that depends on one of the listed integrations or migration support. Confirm the license level for each capability before choosing. |
| SEOPress | Metadata, social previews, XML sitemaps, migration, schema, and a Pro tier. | 300,000+ active installations, as reported in WordPress.org’s directory figures. | Consider it if these controls match your workflow; check the current listing and vendor details to establish which features require Pro. |
Installation figures are live directory counts, not a market-share study or a measure of unique users. The listings do not establish that one plugin outperforms another.
Which plugin fits your use case?
You need broad controls in one plugin
Rank Math’s listing describes the widest set of specific controls among these four, including schema, redirects, 404 monitoring, internal-link suggestions, and local and WooCommerce features. That breadth may be useful, but it does not establish that every site needs those tools or that every feature is available in the same version.
Rank #2
You want a familiar metadata and structured-data workflow
Yoast SEO’s listing describes structured data and a free product with paid commercial upgrades. Compare its current feature boundaries with your requirements before deciding whether an upgrade is necessary.

Your site depends on integrations or migration
All in One SEO’s listing calls out Search Console, page-builder support, WooCommerce SEO, multilingual sitemaps, and migration. If one of those is decisive, confirm its availability at the license level you are considering and check whether it supports your specific setup.
You want metadata, social previews, and schema controls
SEOPress lists metadata, social previews, XML sitemaps, migration, and schema, alongside a Pro tier. Its listing does not, by itself, establish which of those capabilities are included at each tier, so verify the current feature breakdown before committing.
Other plugins in the WordPress directory
The WordPress.org SEO tag page also lists The SEO Framework, SiteSEO, and SureRank. SmartCrawl’s listing describes support for custom post types and taxonomies. These directory entries expand the options, but the available descriptions do not provide enough equal-depth information to compare them feature by feature with the four above. Browse the WordPress.org SEO plugin directory and verify each plugin’s current features and fit for your site.
Rank #4
Will switching plugins cost you rankings?
A plugin change can alter metadata, schema, sitemap output, or redirects if settings are not carried over or recreated. That is a reason to plan the switch carefully, not evidence that changing plugins automatically causes a ranking drop. Rank Math’s listing includes import support for other SEO plugins, but an import feature is not a guarantee that every setting or page will transfer exactly as intended.

- Record the existing titles, descriptions, schema settings, sitemap configuration, and redirects that matter to your site.
- Check the new plugin’s import options and identify anything that will need manual review.
- After switching, inspect representative pages and confirm that their metadata, structured data, sitemap inclusion, and important redirects behave as expected.
- Monitor the site for broken URLs or missing search-facing information and correct any discrepancies you find.
What the directory figures can—and cannot—tell you
WordPress.org reports more than 10 million active installations for Yoast SEO, more than 4 million for Rank Math, more than 2 million for All in One SEO, and more than 300,000 for SEOPress in the figures cited above. These are directory-reported adoption counts, not unique-user totals, independent quality ratings, or proof of better rankings. No independent comparative ranking-performance measurement is established by these listings.
