If you enjoy Wordle’s daily ritual but want a different kind of challenge, try a puzzle that changes the task—not just the number of guesses. The New York Times’ Connections, Strands and Spelling Bee offer distinct word challenges; Octordle multiplies the familiar hidden-word format across eight boards; and Waffle, Semantle and Worldle shift toward rearrangement, meaning or geography. The right pick depends on whether you want a quick daily solve, more simultaneous tracking or a break from spelling clues.
Choose by the kind of puzzle you want
| Game | Core mechanic | Best fit if you want |
|---|---|---|
| Connections | Group words that share a common thread. | Spotting categories and testing how words relate. |
| Strands | Find hidden words tied together by a theme. | A themed word search rather than a single hidden answer. |
| Spelling Bee | Make words from seven letters. | Building multiple words from a constrained letter set. |
| Octordle | Solve eight five-letter words on separate boards; each guess applies to all eight. | Keeping the familiar letter-feedback loop while tracking several targets. |
| Quordle | Solve four five-letter puzzles at once. | A multi-board version with fewer simultaneous targets than Octordle. |
| Waffle | Rearrange letters to complete six crossing words, with a limited number of swaps. | Working with letter placement and crossing answers. |
| Semantle | Use meaning-based clues to find a target word. | Reasoning about semantic relationships instead of spelling feedback. |
| Worldle | Use geography clues to identify a country or territory. | A daily deduction game that tests geographic knowledge rather than vocabulary. |
The New York Times’ Games catalogue also includes Crossword, Mini Crossword and Pips, where the task is placing dominoes. Its descriptions of Wordle, Connections, Strands and Spelling Bee are available in the NYT Games catalogue. The company says it strives to offer puzzles for all skill levels that people can enjoy daily; that is a statement of intent, not a measured comparison of difficulty.

Pick the format that matches your routine
For a short daily change of pace: Connections, Strands or Spelling Bee
These are not Wordle clones. Connections asks you to identify relationships among words; Strands turns the search into a themed hidden-word puzzle; Spelling Bee asks you to form words from seven letters. Choose by the kind of reasoning you feel like doing that day: categorizing, searching or word-building.

For more of Wordle’s feedback loop: Octordle or Quordle
Octordle’s official game page describes eight five-letter boards and 13 guesses, with each guess applied to all boards. That creates a heavier tracking task: a letter can be useful on one board while still leaving several other answers unresolved. The page also lists Sequence, Rescue, archive and unlimited modes, so it can serve both a daily habit and additional play. The same page says the daily puzzle begins at midnight UTC and is shared by players that day; these product details may change. Check Octordle’s current rules and modes.

PC Gamer describes Quordle as four simultaneous five-letter puzzles with nine guesses. Treat those counts as a guide rather than guaranteed current rules, since the available description is from a secondary source and rules can change. Multiple boards are a different kind of challenge, not proof that one game is objectively harder for every player.
For a change from guessing: Waffle, Semantle or Worldle
Waffle changes the operation: instead of entering guesses, you rearrange letters to solve crossing words. The available description says swaps are limited but does not establish a current move count. Semantle shifts from letter matches to semantic similarity, while Worldle uses country or territory geography clues. Their exact limits, schedules and current rules are not established here, so consult each game itself before relying on those details.

Check access before making a game your daily habit
Free access depends on the game and feature. The NYT Help Center lists Wordle, Connections, Connections: Sports Edition, Crossplay, Pips, Strands and Sudoku as accessible without a Games subscription, and says Spelling Bee has limited free access. The complete subscription library and companion features require a Games or qualifying All Access subscription. See the NYT Games subscription help page for current details; pricing is not stated here and may change.
The NYT says many games work in a web browser or its mobile Games app. Octordle says it runs in a modern browser and does not require an account to start; it saves progress and streaks in the local browser. Browser and access details can change, so check the game or publisher before you settle on a routine.

A quick way to decide
- Choose your preferred reasoning. Go with word grouping, themed searching or letter construction for a different word challenge; choose Semantle or Worldle if you want to leave spelling clues behind.
- Decide how many boards you want to track. Stay with one daily puzzle for a focused session, or try Quordle or Octordle if simultaneous targets sound enjoyable.
- Check how you can play. Confirm whether the game is available in your browser or app and whether the specific mode or feature you want is free.
- Try the format, not just its difficulty label. A puzzle can feel demanding for very different reasons—category ambiguity, hidden-word searching, vocabulary, geography or multi-board tracking. Choose the kind of effort you actually enjoy.
