For smoother performance in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Remastered on PC, start with your resolution and FPS target, then match your hardware to CD PROJEKT RED’s requirements. If performance matters more than advanced lighting, begin with raster rendering and leave ray tracing and path tracing off. Lower output resolution or use an upscaler supported by your GPU before adding those demanding features.
This guidance is for the remaster released September 29, 2026—not the 2022 next-gen update or the classic PC build. Its PC version uses DirectX 12 and adds rendering and upscaling options that change which settings are available.

Choose a resolution and FPS target before changing settings
Write down your GPU, CPU, display resolution, and preferred frame-rate target. Decide whether you prioritize a stable-feeling target such as 60 FPS or higher visual fidelity. Then compare your system with the remaster’s published tiers. CD PROJEKT RED’s targets are estimates based on QA tests, not guarantees for every scene or PC; the listed RT modes were tested with upscaling on Auto, and the path-tracing target also used Frame Generation. These tiers are useful comparison points, not a promise that matching one component guarantees the target. CD PROJEKT RED says scene, system configuration, graphics settings, and resolution affect results, and that FPS may fluctuate. Its support article notes that higher output resolution significantly affects FPS. The 4K path-tracing hardware is a target for that demanding mode, not a baseline requirement to play the game.

Use a performance-first starting point
The official tiers separate raster presets from more demanding ray-tracing and path-tracing tiers. Based on that comparison—not a benchmark of every setting—this is a conservative sequence for a PC that is missing its target:
- Start with raster rendering. Leave ray tracing and path tracing off. Use the raster tier closest to your resolution and target: Low for the 1080p/30 FPS minimum point, High for 1080p/60 FPS, or Ultra for 1440p/60 FPS.
- If FPS is still below target, reduce output resolution. Try a lower resolution before enabling advanced lighting; resolution is an explicitly identified performance factor.
- Try a supported upscaler. Select an option available to your GPU and mode, then assess the same scene at the same settings.
- Change one option at a time. Revisit the same demanding location after each change so you can tell whether the adjustment helped. No single setting change guarantees a fixed FPS gain.
The order is a practical decision process inferred from the published tiers and support guidance; it is not a tested universal preset or a measured ranking of individual graphics options.

Decide whether ray tracing or path tracing is worth the cost
For an FPS-first setup, keep both off unless your hardware is close to the corresponding RT target and you prefer the lighting changes to the extra performance headroom. The published RT targets start at 1080p/30 FPS and rise to 1440p/60 FPS at RT: Ultra, with upscaling set to Auto in those tests. Path tracing is a still more demanding target: the listed 2160p/60 FPS configuration uses Frame Generation and high-end hardware.
Ray tracing applies to selected scene features such as shadows or reflections, while path tracing combines lighting and rendering in one system, according to NVIDIA’s explanation. That is vendor material describing the rendering approach, not independent proof of a particular FPS result. If you want either mode, treat the matching official tier as a reality check and test in a demanding location; do not assume results from the 4K path-tracing target apply to your PC.

Choose an upscaler your hardware and mode support
The remaster supports several upscaling options, but the available choice depends on GPU and feature support. CD PROJEKT RED’s announcement describes the options as follows:
- NVIDIA: DLSS 4.5 with Ray Reconstruction.
- AMD: FSR 4 with Frame Generation and Anti-Lag 2 on Radeon RX 7000 Series and newer. FSR 2 is used on unsupported GPUs.
- Intel: XeSS 2.0 with Frame Generation and Low Latency.
Check which options the game exposes on your system rather than assuming every feature is available on every GPU. The remaster’s release and PC feature details are in CD PROJEKT RED’s announcement. Upscaling was also used in the official RT and path-tracing target tests, but its effect on your own image quality and frame rate depends on your hardware, settings, and scene.

Keep the version and hardware requirements straight
The advice here applies to The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Remastered, released September 29, 2026. CD PROJEKT RED describes the PC release as native DirectX 12, with multithreading, GTAO, ray-traced local shadows, updated screen-space effects, and updated HDR calibration. Its rendering and upscaling feature set differs from earlier PC versions, so do not treat a preset recommendation for the 2022 next-gen update or classic build as equivalent.
An SSD is required for the latest technical enhancements, according to CD PROJEKT RED, which also cites faster load times and smoother asset streaming as benefits. An SSD requirement does not mean an SSD will fix GPU-bound frame-rate drops or guarantee a smoother FPS result. Confirm storage and other requirements against the official PC requirements.
Troubleshoot below-target performance methodically
- First confirm the version. Make sure you are adjusting the remastered PC release, since earlier builds do not share its complete rendering feature set.
- Check the target tier. Compare your GPU and CPU, resolution, and desired FPS with the closest raster or RT tier rather than judging by an Ultra label alone.
- Reduce the biggest known pressure first. Try a lower output resolution and an available upscaler before turning on demanding lighting modes.
- Test like for like. Use the same location and change only one option at a time. A scene can affect FPS, so a different location is not a reliable comparison.
- Reassess the goal. If the desired resolution and frame rate sit above the tier that matches your hardware, choose a lower target or prioritize image quality selectively rather than expecting one toggle to close the gap.
CD PROJEKT RED’s support guidance says its FPS targets are QA-based and can fluctuate with scene, system configuration, resolution, and graphics settings. It does not establish a complete setting-by-setting performance-cost ranking, so exact gains from individual toggles should not be assumed.
