How to choose earbuds for a MacBook
Start with the way you use your devices. If you regularly move between a Mac, iPhone, and iPad signed in to one Apple Account, AirPods’ supported automatic switching may be useful. If you want earbuds connected to a computer and another device at the same time, compare models that explicitly support multipoint, such as the Sony WF-1000XM5 and Jabra Elite 10.

Pair Bluetooth earbuds with a MacBook
- Put the earbuds in pairing mode, following their manufacturer’s instructions. Keep them near the Mac.
- On the Mac, open Apple menu > System Settings > Bluetooth.
- Find the earbuds under nearby devices and select them to connect. Apple’s MacBook Air Bluetooth guide describes this setup flow; labels or screens can vary by macOS version.
- If the Mac remains set to its built-in speakers, open Control Center, choose the sound output controls, and select the earbuds.
AirPods: Bluetooth pairing versus automatic switching
AirPods can be used as a Bluetooth headset with a non-Apple device for listening and talking, but Siri is unavailable on non-Apple devices. On a Mac, you can pair them manually through Bluetooth settings. If they are already set up with an iPhone and the Mac uses the same Apple Account, Apple says they should connect automatically.

That account-based behavior is different from generic multipoint. Apple documents automatic switching for AirPods 2, AirPods 3, AirPods 4, and AirPods Pro models in supported setups. The cited example calls for macOS Big Sur or later and iOS 14 or iPadOS 14 or later, with the devices signed in to the same Apple Account and two-factor authentication enabled. Requirements vary by AirPods generation; check Apple’s current AirPods compatibility and setup guidance for the exact model and software versions.
How multipoint differs from Apple device switching
Multipoint lets earbuds maintain Bluetooth connections to two devices at once. Sony documents this behavior for the WF-1000XM5; adding a third device displaces one of the two connected devices. Jabra also describes two-device multipoint for the Elite 10, while noting that the computer, operating system, and application can affect functionality.

Apple’s automatic switching instead relies on supported AirPods and Apple-device configurations, a shared Apple Account, and the specified software and security setup. It is useful within that supported ecosystem, but should not be treated as interchangeable with a promise that earbuds will maintain simultaneous connections to any two Bluetooth devices.
