The right alternative depends on who should see your photos and videos. For public conversation with media, start with Threads; for a photo-first feed on the open social web, consider Pixelfed; for public posts with short clips, consider Bluesky. If you only want to share casual photos with people you know, Instagram Instants is a narrower, temporary option—not a replacement for a public social feed.
Choose by audience and sharing style
Before moving accounts, decide whether you want public discovery or a smaller circle, and whether your main format is photography, short video, or conversation that happens to include media. Privacy and how long a post remains visible matter too. The services below solve different jobs, so none is a universal substitute for X.

Threads: public conversation with photos and video
Threads is the most natural starting point if you want a public discussion feed where images and video support the conversation. Meta’s 2023 launch announcement described it as an app for text updates and public conversations, with posts that could include links, photos, and videos up to five minutes long. That is a dated specification, not a guarantee of the current composer limit; check the app before building a video workflow around it. Meta’s Threads launch announcement

The same launch description said people logged in with an Instagram account. Meta later described direct and group messaging that supports photos, videos, GIFs, and stickers, alongside message-request controls and a hidden folder for unwanted messages. These are useful if you want public posts and a route to private conversations, but messaging does not make Threads a photo portfolio service. Check current account, messaging, and privacy settings before relying on them. Meta’s Threads messaging update

Pixelfed: a photo-first option on the open social web
Pixelfed is worth investigating if the work itself—the images and the community around them—matters more than reaching one enormous centralized audience. A February 2025 TechCrunch report described it as an ActivityPub-based photo-sharing service with photo and video sharing, chronological feeds, direct messages, iOS and Android apps, and an ad-free, open-source, decentralized model. Those details reflect the service as reported at that time; confirm app availability and features today. TechCrunch’s February 2025 report
Because Pixelfed is federated, service activity is spread across independently operated servers, often called instances. That makes your server choice part of the decision. Before joining, look at its community, moderation approach, and whether the people whose work you want to see are active there. Do not assume every instance has the same policies, reach, or longevity.

Bluesky: public conversation and short clips
Bluesky can suit public posts that mix conversation with brief video, but it is not a private-photo destination. Its September 11, 2024 video announcement specified one video per post, up to 60 seconds, with MP4, MPEG, WebM, or MOV support and optional subtitles. The announcement also set upload allowances of 25 videos or 10 GB per day. These are dated limits and may have changed; verify the current composer and documentation before choosing Bluesky for a regular publishing workflow. Bluesky’s video announcement
Bluesky’s privacy help article describes posts and profiles as public and says profiles cannot currently be private. It also explains that when a post is deleted, attached images are removed from storage immediately, while text can take longer to be fully deleted from storage. Deleting a post therefore should not be treated as instant removal of every associated text record. The article describes portability across servers through AT Protocol, while noting that non-developer export tooling was still being built when the page was updated in 2024. Check the current privacy documentation before posting or planning an export. Bluesky’s privacy and data article

Instagram Instants: temporary photos for people you know
Instants is for sharing unedited, real-time photos with Close Friends or mutual followers, not for building a public audience. Meta’s May 2026 announcement says an Instant disappears after it is opened or becomes unavailable to view after 24 hours; a private archive remains available to the account holder for up to one year. Meta says the feature is available globally inside Instagram, while the standalone app is limited to select countries. Confirm which recipients qualify and whether the separate app is available where you live. Meta’s Instants announcement

How to switch without losing the audience or workflow you need
- Name the job. Decide whether you need public discovery, a photography-centered community, short public clips, or temporary sharing with selected people.
- Check current rules. Review the destination app’s current video limits, visibility controls, deletion behavior, and—if relevant—server policies. Product features and rollouts can change.
- Test representative media. Try one photo and one video like the ones you actually intend to share. Check upload behavior, display, captions or subtitles, and who can view them.
- Find your people. Confirm that important contacts or communities are present on the destination; a platform’s features do not guarantee that your audience has moved there.
- Keep the old account until ready. Do not abandon or delete it until the new service meets your needs and you understand what account and post deletion mean there. For sensitive images, rely on the destination’s current privacy and deletion documentation rather than assuming a post can be made private later.
