OBS Studio is the best documented Windows starting point for looping video into a YouTube Live channel: use its built-in Media Source for one video, or VLC Video for a playlist with loop and shuffle controls. This keeps the playout on your Windows PC, which must stay powered on, connected and running OBS. OBS documents local media looping and VLC playlist controls; VLC must be installed for the VLC Video source to appear. A 64-bit OBS installation needs 64-bit VLC. YouTube lists Gyre and Upstream as cloud tools for 24/7 prerecorded video streaming. Check each provider’s current plans and limits before committing.

How to loop a video with OBS on Windows
1. Enable YouTube Live
Before your planned start, enable live streaming for the channel. YouTube says first-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so do not leave it until the last minute. YouTube receives a live feed from an encoder; as YouTube puts it, “An encoder converts your video into a digital format to stream on YouTube.” See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.

2. Add one video or a playlist in OBS
- For one file, add a Media Source to your OBS scene and select the local video. Enable the source’s loop option.
- For several files, add a VLC Video source and create its playlist from the local files. Enable Loop Playlist; enable Shuffle Playlist only if you want a randomized order.
- If VLC Video is missing, install VLC. Match the architecture: a 64-bit OBS installation requires 64-bit VLC.
- OBS Media Source documentation lists MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF and WebM among supported formats. If playback fails, try a supported file and verify it plays locally.
These are media playback controls, not a guarantee of uninterrupted broadcasting. The playlist and playback depend on the local computer and files being available.

3. Connect OBS to YouTube
- In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or select a stream.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key from YouTube Studio into OBS’s stream settings. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it or share it with anyone who should not control the broadcast.
- Start streaming from OBS and check the incoming preview in Live Control Room. When the preview is ready, use YouTube’s Go live control.
4. Plan for archives and recovery
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Its guidance does not promise automatic archiving for broadcasts beyond that threshold, so do not rely on a single 24/7 stream being saved in full. Plan a separate recording or other archive workflow if retaining the whole program matters. OBS’s looping documentation does not certify unattended reliability or automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream.
Choosing between local OBS and cloud playback
- Choose OBS Media Source if one local file is enough and you can keep the Windows PC, network and encoder running.
- Choose OBS VLC Video if you need a local multi-video playlist, loop controls or optional shuffle.
- Choose a cloud service if the stream must continue without using the Windows PC as the playout machine. YouTube’s encoder list describes Gyre as a cloud tool for 24/7 prerecorded streaming and Upstream as a cloud studio for 24/7 streams. Their current prices, limits and exact workflow should be checked with the services directly.
Compare whether files are local or uploaded, whether you need shuffle or in-stream edits, how much control you need over configuration, and the service’s current operating limits and cost. A local OBS setup cannot continue after its PC or internet connection stops.

Troubleshooting common problems

Useful checks before going live
- Test the selected file or playlist in OBS before scheduling a long broadcast.
- Keep the stream key private and verify the preview in YouTube Studio before using Go live.
- Decide how you will retain recordings; automatic archiving is documented for streams under 12 hours, not as a guarantee for an uninterrupted 24/7 broadcast.
- For a local setup, consider whether your existing storage is sufficient for the video library; an external drive is optional, not a requirement.
