Set the screen-off timeout separately: the display can turn off while the PC stays awake. If you use a laptop with its lid closed, also check that the plugged-in lid action does not put the computer to sleep.
These settings prevent Windows from scheduling sleep; they do not guarantee that a browser, network connection, or YouTube stream will keep playing all night.

Set sleep and screen-off separately in Windows 11
In Windows 11, open Start > Settings > System > Power & battery > Screen, sleep, & hibernate timeouts. Microsoft documents separate controls for turning off the screen and putting the device to sleep. Set the sleep option under Plugged in to Never, or choose a timeout longer than your stream. Choose the plugged-in screen-off setting independently, according to whether you want the display to stay lit. Microsoft’s Windows 11 power settings guide gives the current path.

A screen that goes dark is not the same as a sleeping computer: screen-off affects the display, while sleep suspends the active session. Microsoft’s documented default plugged-in sleep timeout is 5 minutes on modern standby devices and 15 minutes on S3 devices. Those are device-dependent defaults, not recommended overnight settings.

Configure the laptop lid before closing it
Many laptops sleep when the lid closes. If you need playback to continue with the lid shut, check the plugged-in lid action first:
- Open Control Panel > System and Security > Power Options.
- Select Choose what closing the lid does.
- In the Plugged in column, choose an action that does not put the PC to sleep.
- Save the change, then verify the behavior during a supervised test before relying on it overnight.
Windows offers separate lid-close behavior for battery and plugged-in operation. Use the plugged-in setting for an overnight session on AC power. The available behavior and its reliability can vary with the laptop’s hardware and manufacturer configuration. See Microsoft’s guidance on shutting down, sleeping, and hibernating a PC.

Power mode is not the sleep timer
Windows power mode adjusts the balance between efficiency and performance; it does not replace the sleep-timeout control. Microsoft describes Balanced as balancing battery life and performance, and Best performance as maximizing performance. For overnight playback, prioritize the plugged-in sleep timeout rather than assuming a performance mode will keep the PC awake. Power-mode availability can depend on the Windows version, hardware, and power plan. Microsoft’s power-mode guidance explains the distinction.

Use this overnight setup checklist
- Connect the PC to AC power for the session.
- Set the plugged-in sleep timeout to Never or beyond the planned viewing period.
- Set screen-off separately; a dark display does not require putting the PC to sleep.
- If closing a laptop lid, set and verify its plugged-in lid action before the session.
- Use an up-to-date supported browser and a reliable internet connection. YouTube notes that some live streams need faster connectivity and more processing power than ordinary video.
- If Wi-Fi is unstable, try a wired Ethernet connection as a troubleshooting step; YouTube says hard-wiring may help.
- Run a short supervised check with the intended screen and lid settings before depending on an overnight session.
YouTube lists 500+ Kbps for ordinary viewing and recommends 1+ Mbps for the premium movie, TV, and live content described on its requirements page. These are not guarantees of stable playback at every resolution: playback quality adapts to connection speed, player size, source quality, and browser. YouTube’s system requirements and supported devices also recommends closing other tabs, browsers, and programs while streaming.

Check YouTube’s own playback timer
Windows sleep settings do not control YouTube’s Sleep Timer. If it is set to pause playback during the night, the video will stop even while the PC remains awake. Check the YouTube player timer separately and make sure its setting matches the session you intend to watch. YouTube’s Sleep Timer help page describes this playback control.
Troubleshoot a stream that stops overnight
| What you observe | What to check | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| The PC enters sleep | Confirm the plugged-in sleep timeout and, on a laptop, the plugged-in lid-close action. | Correct those settings, then test again while supervised. |
| The PC stays awake but playback pauses | Check the YouTube Sleep Timer and whether the stream itself ended. | Adjust the timer if needed and retry playback. |
| The stream buffers or loses connection | Consider Wi-Fi reliability and network congestion. | Retry playback or test a wired connection. YouTube notes congestion can affect live programming. |
| The browser hangs or playback fails | Check that the browser is supported and up to date; consider whether other tabs or programs are consuming resources. | Close unnecessary tabs and programs, then retry in the supported browser. |
YouTube’s computer playback troubleshooting guide recommends checking or changing the connection and retrying playback. Changing Windows power settings cannot fix an ended stream, a YouTube playback pause, or an internet failure.

Windows 10 and missing controls
If you are following a Windows 10 guide, treat its menu path as legacy: Microsoft support for Windows 10 ended on October 14, 2025. Power-mode choices and some controls may also be unavailable on particular devices or custom power plans. If a setting is missing, the choices exposed by your Windows version and hardware may differ.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsOr let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep your own YouTube channel live overnight with uploaded videos, rather than watch someone else’s livestream, StreamNeo is a different approach: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. It supports the video as uploaded up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. Learn more at StreamNeo, or start the free first day.
