A managed API can take care of fetching pages, proxy selection, JavaScript rendering and data extraction, but the right choice depends on the pages you need, the fields you need back, request volume, concurrency and the cost of the features each target requires.
For most projects, start with ordinary HTTP retrieval and add browser rendering only for pages whose required content depends on JavaScript or interaction. Then pilot candidate services against representative URLs and compare the returned fields and effective cost—not just headline monthly prices.

What a web scraping API does—and what it does not do
A web scraping API accepts a request for a page or data and returns a response, often with some combination of proxy handling, browser rendering and extraction. The service can reduce the infrastructure you operate, but it cannot remove the need to define what data you want, check whether the result is correct, or decide whether collection and reuse are appropriate for your use case.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsProducts differ in how they handle a request. Some offer an HTTP response mode as well as browser-rendered HTML; some add structured extraction or interaction controls. “JavaScript rendering” is not synonymous with “data extraction”: one renders a page, while extraction rules determine which values to return.

Which web scraping API should you use?
Use the mode and provider that solve your actual target-site problem at an acceptable effective cost. These are representative services supported by the available product documentation, not a tested or exhaustive market ranking.
| Service | What its official materials describe | Useful fit question | What to verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| ScrapingBee | A request-based API with JavaScript rendering, interaction scenarios, and CSS/XPath or AI extraction rules. Its pricing page describes proxy rotation and headless-browser handling. | Will the selected tier cover the monthly workload and concurrency after accounting for the features used? | Credits are not always one per request: rendering, premium proxies and extraction features can raise consumption. |
| Zyte API | Automatic proxy selection and rotation, unblocking and extraction; its API reference documents HTTP response and browser HTML extraction modes. | Can the target use the HTTP path, or does it require browser rendering? What does the target-site tier cost? | Calculate the cost for the specific mode and site. Zyte’s comparison with ScrapingBee is vendor-authored, not neutral pricing guidance. |
| Bright Data Web Scraping API | Proxy rotation, JavaScript rendering, CAPTCHA handling, session management and structured output are described as parts of its service. | Do you need this combination of managed handling and data infrastructure at your expected scale? | Keep performance figures attached to the specific study and test population Bright Data reports; they are not guarantees for your targets. |
For a screenshot or PDF rather than extracted records, ScreenshotNeo is the alternative to try first: it returns clean screenshots or PDFs, removes supported consent banners and overlays before capture, and bills only clean shots. It is a screenshot API and MCP server, not a general-purpose structured-data scraping API. See ScreenshotNeo.
Compare web scraping API pricing by workload
A monthly plan’s headline request allowance can be misleading when rendering or add-ons consume extra credits. Compare each provider’s current price and billing rules for the configuration you will actually use, including retries and failed requests where those are billable.

These are the plans and amounts listed on ScrapingBee’s official pricing page as accessed in 2026; the page says prices exclude VAT and offers 1,000 free credits without a credit card. Recheck the live page before purchase because prices and allowances can change. ScrapingBee’s documentation says JavaScript rendering is on by default and costs five credits per request; its examples show premium proxies and AI extraction can increase consumption. Therefore, do not estimate effective cost by dividing plan credits by the number of URLs alone.
The available source material does not establish comparable current prices for Zyte or Bright Data, so a price ranking across these three would not be sound. Request the applicable quote or use the providers’ current pricing tools and calculate costs using your own target mix.

When to use JavaScript rendering
Try ordinary HTTP retrieval first
Use the simpler HTTP path when the page response already contains the fields you need. It can avoid the additional latency and feature charges associated with rendering a browser. Inspect the actual response rather than assuming a site is static based on how it looks in your own browser.
Escalate to a browser when the required content depends on it
Use browser rendering where the target populates the needed fields with JavaScript or requires page interactions. Record the effects on field completeness, response time and credit use. Rendering a page does not guarantee that every element loads: scripts can fail, content may require an interaction, and a site’s behavior can change.
How to evaluate providers with a useful pilot
- Define the workload. List representative domains and URLs, the exact fields to extract, refresh frequency, expected monthly requests, concurrency and any geographic requirements.
- Test the least complex mode. Check ordinary HTTP retrieval first. Use browser rendering only for targets where the required content is missing without it.
- Review output against the source. Manually inspect a sample of returned records. Track field completeness and correctness, stability after page changes, retries, response time and the operational effort required to keep extraction working.
- Model effective cost. Use the provider’s current billing rules for the selected mode and add-ons. Include expected retries and failures according to the service’s rules, and record the date and target set used for the estimate.
- Check the rules before deploying. A service’s ability to retrieve a page does not establish that a particular collection or reuse is permitted. Review applicable target-site policies and contractual terms for your use case.
How to interpret scraping benchmarks
Success-rate figures depend on the tested sites, test conditions, definitions and date. Bright Data’s 2026 comparison reports an average success rate of 98.44% in a Scrape.do benchmark of 11 providers, and 93.14% for Zyte in a separate Proxyway 2025 benchmark of 15 heavily protected sites. These are figures reported by Bright Data from two different studies; they are not one head-to-head test and do not predict results for a particular target list.
Use vendor-reported benchmarks as context, then measure success against your own representative URLs and fields. Do not assume a reported average is a service guarantee or that two percentages measured in different studies are directly comparable.
Best Value
When the required output is a screenshot
If your job is to capture a page as an image or PDF—not to extract structured records—use a screenshot service instead of choosing a scraper API for the wrong output. ScreenshotNeo offers a GET endpoint that returns PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF, along with an MCP server for AI agents. Its capture options include full-page screenshots, CSS-selector element capture, custom waits, device viewports, PDF settings, custom CSS and JavaScript, and bulk capture. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for parameters and setup.
Or skip the browser setup
One cURL request returns a screenshot file:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
ScreenshotNeo removes supported cookie and consent banners, newsletter popups and chat widgets before capture; bot checks, blank pages and failed loads are never billed. AI agents can take screenshots through its MCP server. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Sign up for ScreenshotNeo free.
Common evaluation mistakes
- Comparing plan credits as if every request costs one credit. Rendering and add-ons can change credit consumption; model the features used for each target.
- Choosing a browser-rendered mode for every URL. Try HTTP retrieval first where it returns the required data, then compare the cost and latency of rendering only where needed.
- Trusting a vendor average as a prediction. Benchmark populations vary. Validate a sample matching your targets and fields.
- Ignoring concurrency. Monthly volume alone does not tell you whether a tier can handle the rate or parallelism your schedule requires; compare the provider’s concurrency allowance with your workload.
- Assuming technical access equals permission. Review the rules that apply to the target and intended use; API capability is not a legal conclusion.
Frequently Asked Questions
What should I do when a target page changes and extraction breaks?
Treat extraction as something to monitor, not a one-time setup. Recheck the affected fields against the page, update the relevant selectors or extraction rules, and rerun the representative sample before restoring the job.
