There is no single best web scraping API for every extraction job. Choose by the target site, the data fields you need, rendering and geographic requirements, delivery workflow, and the provider’s actual billing unit. The providers below offer different approaches; their official pages do not establish a neutral, same-workload performance winner.

How to choose a web scraping API

Start with the site and the output your pipeline must consume—not the headline price. A general URL-fetch API may return HTML that your team must parse, while a target-specific endpoint may provide structured fields if its coverage and schema match your requirements.

  1. Confirm target coverage and output. Check whether the provider supports the site and whether its returned fields, schema, and completeness meet your needs.
  2. Identify the page’s technical requirements. Determine whether it needs JavaScript rendering, browser interaction, a headless browser, a particular location, or custom headers.
  3. Translate the job into billable usage. Work out how your configuration affects credits, successful results or records, or platform usage. Rendering, proxies, storage, and transfer may change the total.
  4. Check the operational fit. Review batch handling, concurrency or submission limits, scheduling, delivery and storage, and how much pipeline infrastructure your team wants to maintain.
  5. Trial one representative workload. Use the same target, fields, region, rendering settings, volume, and output validation for each provider. Measure useful, complete data and total cost, not just HTTP responses or vendor performance claims.

Provider Approach and notable fit Displayed pricing snapshot
ScrapingBee URL-oriented API with headless-browser JavaScript rendering, interaction scenarios such as clicking, and extraction rules for selected fields. A fit for teams wanting an API-led workflow with rendering and extraction controls. Its pricing page displayed 1,000 free API credits and Hobby at $19/month for 75,000 credits; Freelance at $49/month for 250,000; Startup at $99/month for 1,000,000. Feature availability varies by plan.
Bright Data Scraper APIs Managed extraction combining capabilities listed for JavaScript rendering, residential proxies, CAPTCHA-solving, worldwide geotargeting, JSON/CSV parsing, automated proxy management, and webhook/API delivery. A fit when a project values a combined managed service. Its pricing page displayed 5,000 free records monthly, pay-as-you-go at $1.50 per 1,000 records, and Scale at $499/month including 384,000 records, with additional records at $1.30 per 1,000. Confirm current inclusions and workload costs with its estimator.
Oxylabs Web Scraper API Offers preconfigured target endpoints with options such as location, language, and custom headers, plus automatic proxy rotation. Its target library includes Amazon product, pricing, search, and sellers endpoints. A fit when a supported endpoint’s schema matches the fields you need. Its pricing page displayed a free trial of up to 2,000 results and a Micro plan at $49/month with up to 98,000 Amazon results without JavaScript rendering. Other targets and rendered jobs have different rates; VAT may apply.
Apify An actor-based scraping and automation platform, rather than only a per-record API. A fit for teams that want configurable Actors, a marketplace, or managed job workflows. Its pricing page displayed Free at $0, Starter at $19/month, Scale at $199/month, and Business at $999/month. Total usage may also include compute, proxies, storage, data transfer, and Actor pricing.
Zyte API Offers automated proxy selection and ban handling, REST and proxy modes, a hosted headless browser, geolocation, and usage-based pricing. Consider it when managed scraping infrastructure is useful to the workflow. Use Zyte’s pricing calculator for a workload estimate; the product page does not establish a directly comparable plan price or comparative performance result.

These descriptions and prices come from provider pages, not an independent head-to-head test. Local currency displays, taxes, usage definitions, and plan terms can affect what a customer pays.

What the billing units mean in practice

Credits per configured request

ScrapingBee’s documentation lists a classic proxy request without JavaScript at 1 credit, JavaScript rendering at 5 credits, premium proxy without rendering at 10 credits, and premium proxy with rendering at 25 credits. Its AI extraction/query features add 5 credits. These vendor-listed rates show why estimating from a base request alone can understate consumption; check the live documentation for your configuration.

Records and results

Bright Data’s displayed prices are per record, with a monthly included-record allowance on its Scale plan. Oxylabs bills by results, but its documentation says result volume depends on target and rendering. Oxylabs defines a successful result as successfully scraped content such as page HTML: target HTTP 2xx and 4xx responses count as successful, while system-error 5xx and 6xx attempts do not. A billable or successful response is not proof that the extracted data is complete or useful, so validate output fields independently.

Platform usage and add-ons

Apify costs can include platform usage and compute as well as proxies, storage, data transfer, and an Actor’s pay-per-event or pay-per-usage pricing. A representative run of the actual Actor and workflow is more useful for estimating spend than the plan price alone.

When target-specific endpoints or general APIs make sense

Prefer a target-specific endpoint when the schema fits

Preconfigured endpoints can reduce custom parser work when they cover your target and return the fields you require. Oxylabs lists target-specific options, including Amazon product, pricing, search, and sellers endpoints. Inspect the target library and actual output schema before relying on an endpoint; listed coverage does not by itself establish that every required field is present.

Prefer a general-purpose workflow when flexibility matters

A URL-oriented API such as ScrapingBee can suit teams that need to fetch varied pages, render JavaScript, perform documented interactions, or define extraction rules. The trade-off is that a general URL request may leave more parsing and target-specific validation to your application.

Consider a broader platform for managed jobs

Apify’s Actors and marketplace can fit teams seeking configurable jobs and platform workflows. Bright Data describes a combined extraction, proxy, parsing, and delivery offering. These are different operating models: compare how much infrastructure and usage accounting your team wants to own, rather than treating each as an interchangeable request endpoint.

How to run a useful provider trial

  1. Choose representative pages. Include the target’s normal page types and any pages likely to need JavaScript or interaction.
  2. Specify fields and acceptance checks. Record the required fields, formats, completeness rules, and what counts as a usable record.
  3. Hold configuration constant. Match geography, rendering, headers, volume, and delivery method as closely as each service permits.
  4. Track more than responses. Measure usable output, missing or malformed fields, retries, elapsed workflow time, and billed usage. Keep provider-defined success separate from your data-quality criteria.
  5. Project from measured usage. Apply the provider’s current pricing rules to the expected recurring volume, including rendering, proxy options, Actor compute, storage, or transfer where relevant.

This trial is necessary because the available official product pages do not provide a neutral benchmark that ranks these services for speed, reliability, or success across targets.

ScreenshotNeo for screenshot capture—not a general scraping API

If the extraction job is actually to capture a web page as an image or PDF, ScreenshotNeo is a distinct alternative to try first. It is a website screenshot API and MCP server, not a substitute for a provider that returns structured records for a scraping workflow. Its differentiators for capture jobs are clean screenshots, billing only for clean shots, and a free plan with 1,000 shots a month; see ScreenshotNeo.

For a direct API call, create an API key and replace the example URL with the page you want to capture. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options and response details.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

Or skip the browser setup

One GET request can return a screenshot; the API also supports PDF output. ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks/CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers report the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server includes take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents and MCP clients such as Claude and Cursor. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots. Sign up free for 1,000 screenshots a month, with no card required.

Common selection mistakes

  • Comparing unlike prices: A credit, record, result, and compute unit are not equivalent. Model the same job in each provider’s own unit.
  • Assuming an HTTP response means good data: Validate the fields you need. In particular, Oxylabs counts target 4xx responses as successful results under its stated definition.
  • Ignoring render and proxy settings: These can change the bill. ScrapingBee lists different credit rates by configuration, and Oxylabs says result volumes depend on target and rendering.
  • Choosing an endpoint from its label alone: Confirm target coverage, schema, and field completeness on representative pages.
  • Using a plan headline as a total-cost estimate: Account for usage beyond included allowances and, on broader platforms, compute, proxies, storage, and transfer.
  • Treating vendor claims as a category ranking: Provider product pages establish listed features and billing terms, not a neutral performance comparison.

Frequently asked questions

Can a successful scraping result still be unusable?

Yes. A provider’s billing definition can count a response as successful even when the response does not satisfy your project’s field-completeness or data-quality requirements. Define and test your own acceptance rules.
