For severe rain and flood alerts in the U.S., use a weather app that relays National Weather Service warnings—but do not depend on an app alone. Pair phone alerts with local emergency-management notices, NOAA Weather Radio or broadcast alerts, and the official NWS radar page. No independent head-to-head evidence establishes one app as the most accurate or fastest.
Which weather apps can help with severe rain and flood alerts?
These options have features relevant to warnings, radar or emergency preparation. NOAA’s app directory is a listing of services, not an endorsement or a comparative performance test; check current availability and paid-feature limits in your app store and settings.

Choose by practical fit: whether the service relays NWS warnings, how it handles saved locations, whether warning areas are clear on its maps, what radar and near-term rain tools it offers, and which functions are free. Notification permissions, connectivity, device settings and service availability can all affect whether an alert reaches you. Feature descriptions alone do not establish alert speed or forecast accuracy.

Does the National Weather Service have a warning-alert app?
No. The NWS says it does not currently provide a smartphone app that alerts users when it issues a warning. Its mobile-friendly NWS Radar site shows radar, current weather, alerts and a forecast for a location; you can bookmark it or save it as a home-screen icon. It is an official information source, not a dedicated push-alert app. See the NWS FAQ.

Why an app should not be your only flood-warning channel
The NWS distributes watches and warnings through NOAA Weather Radio and relays warnings to local radio and television. It advises: “It’s always a good idea to have more than 1 way to receive warnings. Any single way can fail at times.” Check whether your city or county emergency-management office offers phone or email alerts; those notices may include local instructions. NWS FAQ.
Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA) are geographically targeted public alerts delivered to capable mobile devices, but not every flash-flood warning generates one. Under the criteria described in NOAA’s 2020 explainer, flash-flood WEAs are issued for warnings tagged “considerable” or “catastrophic.” Other flash-flood warnings continue to be distributed through NOAA Weather Radio, the Emergency Alert System, broadcast media, weather.gov and partner systems. A phone that does not sound a WEA is not proof that no warning exists. NOAA says: “If you receive a flash flood warning on your mobile device, please take action immediately.” NOAA’s WEA explainer.

Check your phone’s emergency-alert settings as well as an app’s notification permissions. - Install a weather app with the warning and map features you need. Allow notifications, add home and other important locations, and review which alerts the app offers. Check its current platform availability and any subscription restrictions.
- Save the official radar page. Open radar.weather.gov, check the location view for alerts and radar, and bookmark it or add it to your phone’s home screen.
- Sign up for local alerts. Look up your city or county emergency-management office and subscribe to available phone or email notices.
- Check WEA on your device. Review the emergency-alert settings for your phone model and region; do not assume app notification settings control WEA.
- Add a channel that does not depend on app notifications. NOAA Weather Radio, local radio and television are warning channels identified by the NWS. Choose what is practical for your location and circumstances.
This guidance is U.S.-focused. Outside the United States, use your national weather service and local emergency-alert system; app coverage and warning rules differ by country.
