The best way to run a Windows game on a Mac depends on the specific title: stream it if a cloud service supports it, try CrossOver for local play without a full Windows desktop, or use Parallels to run Arm Windows on supported Apple silicon Macs. None of these options works with every game. Check the game’s current catalogue listing or compatibility report, plus its graphics and anti-cheat requirements, before spending money. If the publisher offers a Mac version, that may be the simplest route.
Choose a route based on the game
| Your priority | Route to check first | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Minimal local setup | GeForce NOW or Xbox Cloud Gaming | The exact game, region, account or purchase conditions, compatible Mac and browser, and connection quality. |
| Local play without a full Windows desktop | CrossOver | The current CrossOver report for the title, its launcher, graphics backend, multiplayer mode, and anti-cheat status. |
| Windows environment for games and other software | Parallels with Arm Windows on supported Apple silicon Macs | Mac hardware, Windows version and license, graphics API requirements, anti-cheat, and title-specific compatibility. |
| A Mac-native edition is available | Native Mac version | The publisher’s current macOS requirements and the store listing for that edition. |
These routes have different compatibility checks: a game appearing in a streaming catalogue does not establish that it works in CrossOver or a virtual machine, and a local compatibility report says nothing about cloud availability.

Stream games with GeForce NOW or Xbox Cloud Gaming
Cloud gaming runs a game on a service’s hardware and streams the result to your Mac. It avoids installing Windows or rendering the game locally, but only titles supported by the chosen service can be played. Your account or purchase entitlement, region, device, and service terms also matter.

GeForce NOW
NVIDIA advertises more than 4,000 games on its GeForce NOW games page. That is the vendor’s overall catalogue claim, not a promise that a particular game is supported or that every game you own can be streamed. Check the live GeForce NOW games catalogue, then review NVIDIA’s system requirements for your device, browser, and membership features before subscribing.

Xbox Cloud Gaming
Xbox Cloud Gaming supports compatible Apple devices and browsers, but availability depends on the game and the applicable region and account, subscription, or purchase conditions. Xbox currently describes select free-to-play games that require only a free Microsoft account in a supported region, as well as streaming select games users own or buy. Check the Xbox Cloud Gaming page and its setup guide for the current terms. A PC Game Pass catalogue listing or ownership of a Windows game does not by itself establish that the game is available to stream through Xbox Cloud Gaming.
Streaming quality depends on your connection and the service. The cited provider pages do not establish a universal latency threshold or guarantee how well it will work on a particular household network, so test your connection and the game’s feel before relying on it for latency-sensitive play.

Run games locally with CrossOver
CrossOver is a macOS compatibility product for some Windows software; it does not install a full Windows desktop. Its guide describes graphics options including D3DMetal, which translates DirectX 11 and DirectX 12 for macOS. That translation support is not a guarantee that a particular game will run: launchers, updates, anti-cheat, online features, and title-specific behavior can all affect the result.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Search the CrossOver Compatibility Center for the exact game title.
- Read the report’s date, rating, and notes, paying particular attention to the game’s launcher, current version, online play, and anti-cheat.
- Confirm the game’s current requirements and whether the report matches your Mac and macOS setup before buying the game or CrossOver.
Compatibility reports can change as games and their launchers are updated, so an older successful report may not reflect the current version. Apple’s Game Porting Toolkit is principally a developer resource for evaluating Windows executables on Apple silicon and working toward Apple-platform ports. It should not be treated as a straightforward, supported consumer gaming app; CrossOver offers a more accessible product workflow and may use toolkit components.

Use Parallels to run Arm Windows on Apple silicon
Parallels Desktop can run Arm versions of Windows 11 on Apple silicon Macs. Microsoft identifies Parallels Desktop versions 18, 19, and 20 as authorized for Windows 11 Pro and Enterprise on M1, M2, and M3 Macs. That authorization does not make every game compatible: Microsoft warns that Windows on Arm has limitations affecting games and apps, including software that relies on DirectX 12. Parallels also identifies graphics requirements, Windows-on-Arm support, and anti-cheat technology as compatibility factors.
Before choosing this route, check the game’s graphics API and anti-cheat requirements against the current Windows and Parallels versions, and confirm that your Mac meets the game’s needs. Microsoft says each Windows 11 Pro instance needs its own license. See Microsoft’s Windows 11 on Mac guidance and Parallels’ game compatibility notes before relying on a virtual machine for a specific title.

These instructions are not a universal guide to every Mac: Intel and Apple silicon Macs, chip generations, memory configurations, macOS versions, Windows editions, and game requirements differ. Boot Camp is relevant only to older Intel Mac contexts; it is not an Apple silicon solution. The cited Microsoft guidance covers M1, M2, and M3 Macs.
Check compatibility before you commit
- For streaming: confirm the exact game is listed for the service, then verify region, account or purchase entitlement, supported device and browser, and connection suitability.
- For CrossOver: read the current report for the exact title and check whether it covers the version, launcher, online mode, and anti-cheat you need.
- For Parallels: confirm your Mac and Windows setup, then check DirectX or other graphics requirements and anti-cheat compatibility for the game.
- For any local route: compare requirements against your specific Mac configuration; do not assume results from another Mac or software version transfer to yours.
There are no comparable frame-rate or latency results here: performance claims are meaningful only when they use the same game, Mac configuration, settings, software versions, and test method.
