1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe best way to play a trilogy on PS5 depends on the three specific games, your console model, and whether you want permanent licenses or temporary access. For an unnamed trilogy, there is no reliable way to rank digital purchase, discs, and PlayStation Plus without checking each game and your region. Use the guide below to compare the options title by title.
Start by checking all three games
Do not assume a trilogy has a PS5 edition, a physical bundle, a PS5 upgrade, or a place in PlayStation Plus. Check each game separately: one may be a native PS5 release, another a compatible PS4 game, and the third unavailable through the option you prefer.

Digital purchases: simplest when you do not need discs
Sony says PS4 and cross-generation games bought through PlayStation Store appear in the buyer’s library on PS4 and PS5. A PS4 digital game can be downloaded to PS5 if that title is compatible. Before buying, check whether the Store listing is for PS4, PS5, or a bundle, and compare the included content and any upgrade charge.

Sony’s compatibility guidance covers the PS5 backward compatibility of PS4 games.

PS4 discs: check the drive before buying
Sony says the overwhelming majority of more than 4,000 PS4 games work on PS5, though some are exceptions and a compatible game may still show errors or behave unexpectedly. Check every trilogy entry against Sony’s compatibility guidance rather than assuming that a series-wide or bundle label guarantees support.
A compatible PS4 game disc requires a PS5 with a disc drive. The disc must remain inserted each time you play, and the game may need an update. A PS4 game disc cannot be used on a PS5 Digital Edition sold without a drive. Sony explains the disc requirements in its PS5 backward compatibility guide.

Adding a drive to a digital console
Sony’s US listing identifies an add-on disc drive for PS5 Digital Edition slim console model groups CFI-2000 and CFI-2100, as well as PS5 Pro. It is not a universal fit for every Digital Edition: check the model number on your console before buying. Sony says an internet connection is required to pair the drive during setup. See the official US disc-drive listing for the stated compatibility.
PS4-to-PS5 upgrades: verify the offer for each game
Some PS4 games offer an upgrade to a digital PS5 version; Sony says an upgrade may be free or paid, and availability can be limited. The specific offer and conditions depend on the title, so check the publisher’s terms before choosing a PS4 copy on the assumption that it will become a PS5 edition.

- Defend your own country and visit the World: United States, Australia, Japan, France…
- Train yourself alone or compete with your friends!

If the PS4 copy is on disc, you need a disc-drive PS5 to redeem or use the upgrade, and the disc must be inserted to play. A digital PS4 copy does not have that disc requirement, but the upgrade offer still needs to be confirmed for that game. Sony’s PS4 game upgrade guide describes the general process.
PlayStation Plus: useful only if the catalog fits
PlayStation Plus can be a route to games in its catalog, but availability depends on the title, plan, and market. Sony’s service guide describes downloadable catalog games for Extra and Premium/Deluxe on PS5, with streaming options varying by plan and market. Catalog games can leave the service, so check that all three games are currently included in your region and identify the required tier before subscribing.

Confirm current regional membership and terms directly in PlayStation Store or the service before deciding. Catalog access is distinct from buying a digital license or owning a disc.

Sony’s US product listing also says that, from January 2028, newly released PlayStation games will be available for purchase digitally only, while discs for games released before then can continue to be played on the console.
