The right fix depends on whether you are dealing with low frame rates, stuttering, slow loading, or inconsistent performance; none of these steps guarantees a specific FPS increase, and software changes cannot remove a hardware limit.
Start by identifying what feels slow
Different symptoms point to different kinds of friction, so note what happens before changing settings:

- Low frame rate: The game looks consistently choppy. Lowering demanding graphics options is a sensible first experiment.
- Stuttering: The game pauses or jolts intermittently. Close unneeded apps and check background activity before changing several game settings at once.
- Long loading times: This is different from low FPS. If storage space is tight, freeing space can address a storage constraint, but it is not a guaranteed frame-rate fix.
- Unstable performance: If smoothness varies, test one change at a time so you can tell whether it helped.
Record the game’s current settings and make one adjustment at a time. If the result is worse, restore that setting before trying another.

Close unnecessary apps and review background activity
Apps running in the background can use system resources while you play. Close programs you do not need for the session, then review which apps launch automatically. Microsoft explains how to manage startup apps in its Windows performance guidance; Steam likewise recommends stopping unnecessary applications when troubleshooting a game’s performance.

Keep anything you need for the game or PC to work properly running. The goal is to reduce avoidable resource use, not to disable security protections or system services.
Update Windows and check drivers through Windows Update
Install relevant Windows updates and check for optional driver updates in Windows Update. Microsoft includes both steps in its PC performance recommendations. Avoid unofficial driver-download sites; use Windows Update or the relevant hardware maker’s official channel.

An update can address software or compatibility issues, but the cited guidance does not establish a universal FPS gain from updating. If performance gets worse after a change, note what changed and use the available Windows recovery options or the device maker’s official support guidance.

If your drive is nearly full, remove apps you no longer use or use Windows cleanup tools to free space. Microsoft includes storage cleanup among its Windows performance steps. Treat this as freeing constrained space and reducing clutter—not as a guaranteed way to raise frame rates.

Lower demanding graphics settings in the game
Steam recommends changing a game’s video settings when performance is poor. Open the game’s graphics or video menu and lower demanding options, then test the same gameplay situation. Which setting matters most depends on the title and the PC’s limiting component, so there is no universal “best settings” preset.
Lower settings trade visual detail for a chance at smoother play. Change options individually, compare how the game feels, and restore any that make little difference or reduce image quality more than you want.

Check Windows 11 per-game graphics options when they apply
Windows 11 has graphics options for individual apps. Microsoft’s windowed-game optimizations apply to DirectX 10 and DirectX 11 games running in windowed or borderless-windowed mode. If a game does not meet those conditions, that particular optimization may not apply.

On a system with more than one GPU, Windows can also offer a graphics-performance option for an app. Review the game’s per-app graphics settings if your system has multiple GPUs; available choices depend on the PC’s graphics configuration.

Know what Game Mode does—and what it does not promise
Game Mode is a built-in Windows feature intended to prioritize gaming tasks. Microsoft describes it in its Windows 11 gaming guidance. It is reasonable to know about and try, but the cited guidance does not promise a particular FPS increase. Treat it as one setting to test, not a performance multiplier you can count on.
When these changes are not enough
Software and settings changes can reduce avoidable contention or make a game less demanding, but they cannot guarantee adequate performance when the PC is below that game’s system requirements or its hardware is already the bottleneck. Steam notes that a system that does not meet a game’s requirements may need an upgrade. Microsoft similarly cautions that “Older PCs with outdated hardware may not see significant improvements from these steps” in its Windows performance guidance.
If you have tried reasonable settings changes and the game still performs poorly, compare the PC with that game’s published requirements. A no-upgrade approach has limits when the hardware cannot meet the game’s demands.
