To capture a page beyond Chrome’s visible viewport with Selenium, start with the ordinary WebDriver screenshot call and inspect the resulting image: full-page behavior depends on the Selenium binding and browser/driver combination. If it captures only the viewport, use a documented full-page option in your binding or Chrome DevTools Protocol (CDP), which can explicitly capture beyond the viewport in supported integrations.
Choose a capture method that fits your Selenium binding
These approaches are not interchangeable guarantees. A screenshot of the current viewport, a screenshot of a selected element, a clipped image, and a full-document capture are different outcomes. Check the image itself for below-the-fold content.

| Method | Best suited for | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Standard WebDriver screenshot | The simplest first attempt and familiar calls across Selenium bindings. | Implementation behavior varies. Selenium’s JavaScript API describes whole-page capture as a best-effort preference, not a universal guarantee. |
| Chrome DevTools page capture | Chrome-specific control, including capturing beyond the viewport in supported bindings. | CDP integration is browser- and version-dependent; it is not the portable WebDriver screenshot contract. |
| Binding-specific full-page option | A convenient documented feature where the binding and driver support it. | Availability varies, and some APIs can raise an unsupported-operation error. |
| Maximize or enlarge the browser window | Capturing a larger viewport, such as for a viewport-based comparison. | Changing window size does not establish that the entire document will be captured. |
Start with Selenium’s standard screenshot call
Load the page, wait for the application state relevant to your capture, then save a screenshot. Selenium’s JavaScript WebDriver API describes its screenshot call as taking a screenshot of the current page and says PNG data is returned as base64; it lists entire-page capture as a best-effort preference. That description does not establish that every binding and driver produces a full-document image.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsPython example
from selenium import webdriver
options = webdriver.ChromeOptions()
driver = webdriver.Chrome(options=options)
try:
driver.get("https://example.com")
# Replace this with a condition meaningful to your application.
driver.save_screenshot("page.png")
finally:
driver.quit()
This is a standard screenshot call, not a promise of below-the-fold coverage. Inspect page.png and confirm that its dimensions and content match the page you need.

- CRISP CLARITY: This 23.8″ Philips V line monitor delivers crisp Full HD 1920x1080 visuals. Enjoy movies, shows and videos with remarkable detail
- INCREDIBLE CONTRAST: The VA panel produces brighter whites and deeper blacks. You get true-to-life images and more gradients with 16.7 million colors
- THE PERFECT VIEW: The 178/178 degree extra wide viewing angle prevents the shifting of colors when viewed from an offset angle, so you always get consistent colors
- WORK SEAMLESSLY: This sleek monitor is virtually bezel-free on three sides, so the screen looks even bigger for the viewer. This minimalistic design also allows for seamless multi-monitor setups that enhance your workflow and boost productivity
- A BETTER READING EXPERIENCE: For busy office workers, EasyRead mode provides a more paper-like experience for when viewing lengthy documents
JavaScript example
const { Builder } = require('selenium-webdriver');
(async () => {
const driver = await new Builder().forBrowser('chrome').build();
try {
await driver.get('https://example.com');
const pngBase64 = await driver.takeScreenshot();
require('fs').writeFileSync('page.png', pngBase64, 'base64');
} finally {
await driver.quit();
}
})();
The JavaScript API’s stated preference for the entire page is explicitly best effort. For its documented behavior, see Selenium’s JavaScript WebDriver API and WebDriver source documentation.
Use Chrome DevTools when you need beyond-viewport control
When the basic call does not capture the required area, a CDP page-capture command can expose more explicit controls, if your Selenium binding provides an integration for the Chrome protocol version in use. This is a Chrome-specific route, not a cross-browser WebDriver guarantee.

For example, Selenium’s .NET DevTools V148 API reference documents CaptureScreenshotCommandSettings, including a CaptureBeyondViewport property that defaults to false. The settings also document a clip, image format, source surface, JPEG quality, and an encoding choice that trades speed against size. Use the matching API reference and check that the browser’s supported protocol aligns with the generated Selenium binding; the setting’s availability and names are versioned.

Use a documented full-page option where your binding supports it
Ruby
Selenium’s Ruby TakesScreenshot API documents screenshot_as and save_screenshot with full_page: true where supported. The call can raise UnsupportedOperationError if the driver cannot provide the facility, so handle that possibility rather than assuming the option works everywhere.
The related Ruby FullPageScreenshot extension is labeled private API. Treat it as less stable than a documented public API and verify its support for your installed stack before depending on it. References: Ruby TakesScreenshot API and Ruby FullPageScreenshot extension.

Make the result reproducible
- Record your stack: note the language binding, Selenium version, Chrome version, and driver version. For CDP, check protocol compatibility with the binding’s generated API.
- Wait for the right page state: use an application-specific signal, such as a known element or completed state, rather than relying on a universal fixed delay. No single readiness condition fits every site.
- Try the standard screenshot call: save an image, then verify whether it includes the content below the viewport.
- Escalate only as needed: select a documented CDP or binding-specific full-page route that fits your language and versions.
- Check the output against the use case: confirm the relevant content appears and that the image is a document capture rather than only a viewport, element, or clip.
- Keep the capture context: save version information and the relevant capture settings with the output so you can reproduce differences later.
Dynamic pages and lazy-loaded content need particular care: the sources cited here do not establish how every site’s loading behavior affects capture. Confirm the content you need is present before judging the screenshot method.
Troubleshooting common full-page capture problems
- The image ends at the viewport: the chosen WebDriver implementation may not provide a full-document result. Inspect its dimensions and switch to a supported CDP capture or documented binding option if available.
- CDP settings or methods are missing: the binding may not expose that protocol API, or its generated version may not match Chrome’s supported protocol. Check the Selenium binding and browser versions before changing the call.
- Ruby raises
UnsupportedOperationError: the driver does not support the requested full-page facility. Use a supported driver-specific route or fall back to a method your stack documents. - Expected content is absent: verify that the page reached the application state you intended to capture. Choose a meaningful readiness condition and inspect the actual image; a generic delay is not a universal fix.
- Maximizing did not produce a full page: window resizing changes the viewport dimensions, but the documentation does not establish it as a whole-document capture method.
- The result changes across environments: compare recorded browser, driver, Selenium, and protocol versions, then retest the actual target pages. The documented APIs do not establish universal behavior across every combination.
Or skip the browser setup
If you need a screenshot without wiring up a Selenium browser session, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. One GET request can return an image or PDF; its API accepts familiar screenshot parameter names to make switching easier.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does Selenium’s normal screenshot call always capture the whole document?
No. The result depends on the binding and browser/driver implementation; inspect the image and use a supported full-page route if necessary.
Is Chrome DevTools full-page capture portable to other browsers?
No. The CDP route is Chrome-specific and version-dependent, unlike a portable WebDriver guarantee.
