Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesKeep the encoder and YouTube broadcast running, and update the playlist on the encoder side. Stage each revised lesson as a new file, add it at a natural playback boundary, and check the encoder preview and audio before removing the old copy. Do not assume that overwriting a file OBS is currently playing will reload cleanly; test that exact setup first.
Update the playlist without ending the broadcast
The live feed is sent by your encoder. YouTube’s encoder guide describes starting a stream by sending content from an encoder and ending it by stopping that content. For an ordinary lesson update, leave the encoder running and do not end the live event.

- Preserve the current state. Keep a copy of the current playlist and leave the file currently playing in place.
- Stage the revised lesson. Save it under a new filename in a stable media folder. Open and play it through locally to verify the file before using it on stream.
- Update the encoder playlist. At a natural lesson boundary, add the new file to the OBS media or VLC playlist, or switch to the revised item there. The exact controls depend on how the source and playlist are configured.
- Check the transition. Watch the OBS preview and audio meters as playback changes. Confirm the correct lesson and sound are present before removing the old file.
- Keep the local setup available. For a locally operated playlist, the computer, media files and internet connection all need to remain available.
OBS documentation describes media-source and playlist features, but does not establish a universally safe live-reload command across setups. Test your workflow in a private or otherwise controlled stream, including a source reload, an OBS restart and a file change at a playlist boundary, before relying on unattended operation.
Why replacing the playing file is risky
The reviewed OBS documentation does not promise that overwriting a file while the media source is reading it will trigger a clean reload. The result may depend on the installed OBS and VLC versions, the source configuration and the timing of the file change. A new filename and a tested playlist transition avoid relying on an undocumented in-place hot swap.
#1 Best Overall
- Get NVMe solid state performance with up to 1050MB/s read and 1000MB/s write speeds in a portable, high-capacity drive(1) (Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending on host device & other factors. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes.)
- Up to 3-meter drop protection and IP65 water and dust resistance mean this tough drive can take a beating(3) (Previously rated for 2-meter drop protection and IP55 rating. Now qualified for the higher, stated specs.)
- Use the handy carabiner loop to secure it to your belt loop or backpack for extra peace of mind.
- Help keep private content private with the included password protection featuring 256‐bit AES hardware encryption.(3)
- Easily manage files and automatically free up space with the SanDisk Memory Zone app.(5). Non-Operating Temperature -20°C to 85°C
Keep the previous lesson until the replacement is visibly playing correctly. If you need to revise a lesson urgently, stage and verify the replacement first rather than editing or replacing the active file and assuming the encoder will pick it up.
What YouTube’s broadcast documentation does—and does not—show
YouTube’s Live Streaming API guide describes separate broadcast resources being managed while a 24/7 broadcast remains live: an interview broadcast can be activated and later completed without stopping the feed serving the ongoing broadcast. This supports keeping broadcast-resource management separate from the continuous feed; it does not document hot-swapping a lesson file in OBS.

YouTube’s HLS ingestion guidance is also a different layer, not an OBS playlist-editing method. For HLS ingestion, it specifies HTTPS POST/PUT, TS segments between one and four seconds, and a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments. YouTube notes that HLS has higher latency than RTMP. Those HLS requirements do not tell you how to change a lesson file in an OBS source.

- Playlist recovery: Confirm the original playlist is backed up and the old lesson remains available until the new one is verified.
- Playback boundary: Test the update when one lesson ends and another begins, rather than assuming an active source can be replaced without interruption.
- Restart behavior: Check what happens to the playlist and current source after restarting OBS.
- Interruption recovery: Test what happens if the encoder, computer or network connection is interrupted. A local stream depends on those components remaining available.
- File organization: Keep lesson files in a stable folder and use distinct filenames for revisions. A portable drive can help keep local files together, but no particular drive capacity or speed is established as necessary, and a drive does not make live replacement safe.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you would rather not leave a computer running at home, StreamNeo is a YouTube-only cloud service for keeping uploaded videos live in a 24/7 loop. Upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Before relying on it for lesson changes, check the service’s current playlist-edit behavior for your needs; do not assume that a live edit works in a particular way.
