For a free live-wallpaper app, start with Lively Wallpaper; choose Wallpaper Engine if its Steam Workshop library and creation tools appeal to you; and consider DeskScapes 11 for playlists and multi-monitor controls. These apps serve a different purpose from static wallpaper themes: they can put video, animation, web content, or interactive scenes on the desktop. The best choice depends on the content you want and how much background activity your PC can handle.
Which Windows wallpaper app should you choose?
| App or option | Best fit | What stands out | What to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lively Wallpaper | Free live wallpapers and varied content formats | The project describes support for video, GIF, web content, shaders, and other live wallpapers. It is presented as free and open source. | Minimum Windows version differs between its installer and Microsoft Store editions. Check the project requirements before installing. |
| Wallpaper Engine | Community-made and interactive wallpapers, plus creation tools | Steam lists animated and interactive wallpapers, a Workshop, an editor, multi-monitor support, and controls to pause or stop wallpapers. | It requires Steam. The listed price was US$4.99 when the Steam page was checked in 2026; storefront pricing and regional availability can change. |
| DeskScapes 11 | Wallpaper management and customization | Stardock describes animated and video backgrounds, timed playlists, online cloud integration, sizing controls, wallpaper creation, and multi-monitor customization. | The feature details cited here come from Stardock’s June 28, 2023 release announcement. Check the publisher’s current page for licensing, version, and system requirements. |
| Microsoft Store themes | Static wallpapers and straightforward personalization | The Store lists free theme packs as well as apps, including Lively Wallpaper. | A Store result labeled as a theme may be a static image collection, not a live-wallpaper engine. |
What is the difference between a wallpaper app and a theme?
A static theme or wallpaper pack changes the desktop’s background image, often alongside colors and other Windows appearance settings. A live-wallpaper app runs moving or interactive content as the desktop background. Depending on the app, that content may be a video, GIF, web page, or animated scene.

If you only want a still image, a Store theme may be enough. If you want motion, interaction, a playlist, or a way to make and share wallpapers, compare dedicated apps such as Lively Wallpaper, Wallpaper Engine, and DeskScapes 11.

What each live-wallpaper app offers
Lively Wallpaper: free, open-source, and flexible formats
Lively is a sensible first option if you want live wallpapers without a listed purchase price and value open-source software. Its project site describes support for video, GIF, web content, shaders, and Windows 10 and 11. It can suit people who want to use different kinds of content rather than only a library of animated scenes.

Installation requirements depend on the distribution. The project wiki lists Windows 10 version 1903 or later for the installer, and Windows 10 version 1809 or later for the Microsoft Store build. It also lists an Intel i3-equivalent processor, 4 GB RAM, Intel HD Graphics 4600 or above, DirectX 10 or above, and 1 GB of available storage. The project says the Store version needs no additional setup; its installer handles additional dependencies during setup. See the Lively project wiki for the requirements.
Wallpaper Engine: Steam Workshop and wallpaper creation
Wallpaper Engine is the strongest fit here if you want to browse community-made content or create and share your own wallpapers. The Steam listing describes animated and interactive wallpapers, a built-in editor, Steam Workshop sharing, and support for multi-monitor environments. It also supports importing video or websites.
Steam listed the app at US$4.99 when checked in 2026; that is a storefront price snapshot, not a guarantee of today’s price in every region. The listing supports Windows 10 and Windows 11, and says Windows N editions require Microsoft’s Media Feature Pack. Its minimum specifications are an Intel i5-equivalent processor, 1 GB RAM, HD Graphics 4000 or above, DirectX 11, and 512 MB of storage. Consult the Steam listing for current details.

DeskScapes 11: playlists and multi-monitor customization
DeskScapes 11 is worth considering if you want to manage backgrounds as well as apply them. In its June 28, 2023 announcement, Stardock described animated and video backgrounds, timed playlists, online cloud integration, sizing controls, wallpaper creation, and advanced multi-monitor customization for Windows 10 and 11.
Those details come from the publisher’s release announcement, not an independent comparison or a current pricing page. Check Stardock’s DeskScapes page for current availability, licensing, and requirements.
Microsoft Store themes: a simpler static option
The Microsoft Store’s personalization listings include free themes as well as apps. A theme pack is a straightforward choice when you want new still backgrounds; it should not be assumed to animate just because it appears among wallpaper-related results. Browse the Microsoft Store apps and themes and check each listing’s description to see what it actually installs.

How much do live wallpapers affect performance?
There is no controlled head-to-head performance benchmark among these three apps in the sources cited here. Resource use depends on the wallpaper and the PC, so one person’s memory reading is not a reliable prediction for another setup.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Wallpaper Engine says it can automatically pause or completely stop a wallpaper when another app or game is fullscreen. Its listing also notes that web or application wallpapers generally require more resources than 2D, 3D, or video wallpapers. These are vendor descriptions, not independent comparative test results.
In a March 18, 2026 Windows Central hands-on report, Sean Endicott observed roughly 245.5 MB of memory use for Lively while a fullscreen app was open, about 255 MB with a lightly animated scene while other apps were minimized, and about 800 MB with a YouTube wallpaper. Those readings came from his workstation laptop with 32 GB RAM and describe his setup, not a universal result. He also noted that using a YouTube page as wallpaper can be awkward because of ads and interaction.

To assess your own setup, try the wallpaper types you actually plan to use, watch resource use in Windows, and enable pause-on-fullscreen or battery-saving options where available. If you want a low-activity desktop, a static image or simple animation is a more conservative choice than an interactive webpage.
How to pick the right one
- Choose Lively if free and open-source software and support for several live-content formats are priorities.
- Choose Wallpaper Engine if Steam Workshop discovery, interactive content, multi-monitor support, or wallpaper creation justifies its listed purchase price for you.
- Investigate DeskScapes 11 if playlists, background management, and multi-monitor customization matter; confirm current licensing and requirements with Stardock.
- Choose a Store theme if you want static images rather than a background app that runs moving content.
Before installing, confirm that your Windows build meets the requirements for the specific app edition, and check current price and availability on its official listing.
