Antihost VPS is listed first here: its Linux VPS plans provide full root access, NVMe storage, 1 to 16 vCPUs and 2 to 64 GB RAM. The best WooCommerce VPS is not the cheapest plan. It is a server that meets WooCommerce’s current software baseline, leaves enough memory for PHP workers and the database, and includes persistent object caching, fast storage, backups and monitoring. For a new or small store, start at 2 vCPU and 4 GB RAM. A shop with steady traffic or frequent simultaneous administration should move to 4 vCPU and 8 GB RAM. Before signing a contract, verify the PHP and database versions, worker limits and cache options, then load-test checkout on a staging copy.
What WooCommerce requires in 2026
WooCommerce’s current server recommendations set the compatibility floor. Use newer software rather than relying on the legacy fallback values still repeated by old hosting guides.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
| Component | Current baseline | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| PHP | PHP 8.3 or newer; the documentation is tested up to PHP 8.4 | Runs WordPress, WooCommerce and extensions. Older PHP releases can be unsupported or miss security fixes. |
| Database | MySQL 8.0 or newer, or MariaDB 10.6 or newer | Stores products, orders, sessions and customer data. A host that still defaults to MySQL 5.6 or MariaDB 10.4 is below the current baseline. |
| WordPress memory limit | At least 256 MB | Checkout, imports, reports and page builders can exhaust a smaller limit. |
| Transport security | HTTPS for the entire site | Protects logins and payment flows and is required by most payment integrations. |
| WordPress | Version 6.9 or newer | Keeps the application aligned with current WooCommerce releases and security updates. |
The same documentation lists a legacy fallback of PHP 7.4+, MySQL 5.6+ or MariaDB 10.4+. Treat those figures as compatibility history, not a target for a new VPS. A provider offering only those defaults should be removed from your shortlist.

| Store stage | Starting allocation | When to choose it | What to watch |
|---|---|---|---|
| Development or very small catalog | 2 vCPU, 4 GB RAM | Low traffic, limited concurrent administration and a modest number of extensions. | Keep database size, import jobs and image processing under observation; leave headroom rather than using all available memory. |
| Steady traffic | 4 vCPU, 8 GB RAM | Regular orders, marketing campaigns, several staff users or heavier page-builder and reporting workloads. | Measure PHP-worker saturation and database latency during promotions, not only during quiet periods. |
| High traffic or complex catalog | 8 or more vCPU and 8 GB or more RAM | Large catalogs, frequent concurrent checkouts, intensive search, feeds or background processing. | Scaling may require a separate database, queue workers, read replicas or a dedicated cache tier; add those only after measurement. |
Some older guides call 2 GB RAM and two cores a minimum. That can boot WordPress, but it leaves little room for WooCommerce, a database, web-server processes and administrative work. A 4 GB starting point is safer for a production store. One guide recommends 512 MB for PHP memory on busy shops; use that only when your workload needs it and the VPS has enough RAM.
Why memory disappears quickly
A WordPress host guide attributes approximate defaults of 40 MB for a front-end request and 256 MB for an administrative request. Those are general WordPress figures, not a WooCommerce benchmark, and WooCommerce, page builders, analytics, imports and payment extensions can consume more. Set the WordPress memory limit to at least 256 MB, then inspect actual usage before raising it. Increasing the limit cannot compensate for insufficient physical RAM.
Provider candidates and what is actually known
No independent, like-for-like benchmark establishes a single best VPS provider for WooCommerce. The figures below come from provider reviews or guides rather than controlled checkout tests. | Antihost VPS | Linux VPS on AMD Ryzen 9 9950X3D with NVMe storage, 1 to 16 vCPUs and 2 to 64 GB RAM | Stores that need a self-managed Linux VPS with full root access. | Regions include USA East, the Netherlands and Ukraine; the service is self-managed with no cPanel or Windows. |
| Hetzner Cloud | About €5.49 per month; 2 vCPU, 4 GB RAM and 40 GB NVMe | Budget-conscious stores serving European customers that can self-manage a server. | The figures come from a review; confirm current regional availability, backups, support and included traffic. |
| DigitalOcean | About $12 per month; 2 vCPU, 2 GB RAM and 50 GB SSD | Developers who want a straightforward cloud VPS and can add managed database capacity. | 2 GB RAM is below the 4 GB starting recommendation. Managed MySQL is an add-on, so calculate the combined cost. |
| ScalaHosting | Approximately $11–$15 per month for an entry plan with 2 GB RAM and 2 cores | Stores that prefer a hosting vendor to handle more of the server administration. | The cited figures are from a review. Confirm whether the quoted plan is managed, which control panel is included and what worker limits apply. |
| Kinsta | Price not stated in the cited material | Merchants wanting managed WordPress operations and support for uncached WooCommerce requests. | The assessment that it handles uncached requests well is from a review, not an independent benchmark. Request a workload-specific test. |
Ask every candidate for the exact PHP versions, database versions, physical or virtual CPU details, NVMe or SSD model, backup retention, network limits, support scope and upgrade path. “VPS” does not by itself guarantee dedicated CPU time, a particular storage class or a fixed number of PHP workers.
What determines checkout speed
Home pages and catalog pages can often be served from a full-page cache. Cart, checkout and account pages contain customer-specific data and normally bypass that cache. During a sale, PHP workers execute those requests, the database reads and writes order data, and object caching reduces repeated database work. A CDN can deliver static files, but it cannot make an undersized PHP pool or slow database fast.
PHP workers
A worker is a PHP process that handles a request. If every worker is busy, the next shopper waits even when CPU graphs look moderate. A hosting guide from AHosting lists 2–6 workers on a shared pool, 15 or more on a guaranteed tier and 30 or more on a dedicated tier. Those are vendor figures, not a universal standard. Confirm whether your plan has a fixed worker count, whether workers are shared with other sites and what happens when the limit is reached.

Persistent object cache
Enable a persistent object-cache service so frequently used WordPress and WooCommerce data can be read without querying MySQL every time. Ask whether the cache is included, isolated to your store and sized appropriately. A page cache alone does not provide this benefit.
Storage and database latency
NVMe storage generally offers lower latency than conventional SSD storage for database and PHP file operations, but the label is not a substitute for measurement. Check I/O wait, database query time and backup impact while a staging test is running. Avoid placing large, unbounded logs or backup archives on the same volume as the live database.
OPcache
Enable PHP OPcache with PHP 8.3 or newer. It keeps compiled PHP bytecode in memory and avoids recompiling every request. Verify that it is active in the PHP configuration used by the web server, not only in the command-line PHP binary.

Managed or self-managed VPS?
Self-managed VPS
A self-managed server can provide excellent value and full control. You are responsible for operating-system updates, firewall rules, web-server and PHP configuration, database tuning, certificates, backups, malware response and recovery drills. Choose it only if someone on your team can perform those tasks at all hours your store operates.
Managed VPS or managed WooCommerce hosting
Managed services handle more of the patching, monitoring and recovery work and may provide WooCommerce-aware support. They cost more and can restrict low-level configuration or plugins. Ask whether support includes checkout incidents, database restoration and PHP-worker tuning, rather than assuming “managed” means application support.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhen a managed database helps
A managed MySQL service can separate database backups, maintenance and failover from the web server. It also adds cost and network latency, so test the complete checkout path. For a small store, an adequately sized local database is simpler; for a busy store, separation can make scaling and recovery easier.
Best Value
Provision and configure a WooCommerce VPS
Use this sequence for a new deployment or migration. Names of control-panel menus differ, but the checks and order are consistent.
- Select the resource tier. Start with 2 vCPU and 4 GB RAM unless measured traffic already justifies 4 vCPU and 8 GB. Choose NVMe when the price difference is reasonable and confirm a documented backup product.
- Install a supported operating system and web stack. Apply all operating-system updates, create a non-root administrator, disable password-only root login, and allow SSH only through keys or another strong authentication method.
- Configure the firewall. Permit SSH from trusted addresses, HTTPS on port 443 and HTTP on port 80 only for certificate redirects. Keep database ports private; do not expose MySQL directly to the internet.
- Install and verify the application versions. Run
php -vandmysql --version(or the MariaDB equivalent). Confirm PHP 8.3 or newer, MySQL 8.0 or newer or MariaDB 10.6 or newer, and WordPress 6.9 or newer before importing the store. - Set PHP limits deliberately. Set
memory_limitto at least 256M, then choose upload, execution and input limits that match your product-import process. Do not raise every limit blindly; long-running requests can consume all RAM. - Enable OPcache and a persistent object cache. Confirm both are active for web requests. Purge the object cache after plugin, theme or configuration changes that alter stored data.
- Deploy WordPress and WooCommerce. Use HTTPS URLs from the first staging request, keep plugins and themes current, remove unused extensions and configure the payment gateway’s test mode. Never run payment tests against live customer data.
- Configure the database and scheduled work. Use strong, separate credentials, restrict database access to the application host, and schedule backups and WooCommerce maintenance jobs. Large product imports and report generation should run outside your busiest checkout window.
- Automate backups and test restoration. Keep copies outside the VPS, define retention, and restore both files and the database to an isolated environment. A backup that has never been restored is only an assumption.
- Add monitoring and alerts. Track RAM and swap, CPU load, disk space, I/O wait, database connections, PHP-worker saturation, error rates and certificate expiry. Set alerts before the disk or memory reaches a crisis point.
How to load-test checkout safely
Do not choose a plan from a homepage speed test. Build a staging clone with representative products, variations, shipping rules, taxes, coupons, customer accounts and the same payment extensions used in production.
- Disable indexing and use a payment gateway sandbox or a test order method.
- Warm the application by browsing products, adding items to carts and signing in as test customers.
- Generate a gradual sequence of concurrent catalog, cart, checkout and account requests. Increase concurrency in small steps so you can identify the point at which latency or errors rise.
- Record response time for uncached checkout requests, error rates, PHP-worker utilisation, database CPU and connections, RAM, swap and disk I/O.
- Repeat the test with object caching enabled and disabled in staging. The comparison shows whether the cache is working, but it is not a promise of production performance.
- Run a second test while a realistic background task, such as a product import or report, is active. If checkout degrades sharply, isolate or reschedule that task.
- Keep the results with the date, plan, software versions, dataset and concurrency. Re-test after major plugin, theme, PHP or database changes.
There is no published independent TTFB or checkout-time benchmark covering the candidate providers in a common environment. Treat your own staging results as evidence for your store, not as a universal provider ranking.
Scaling signals and upgrade order
- RAM remains available but workers queue: increase the PHP-worker allowance or move to a plan with more guaranteed workers, then retest.
- Workers are available but database CPU or connections peak: inspect slow queries, indexes, extension behavior and object-cache hit rate before adding vCPU.
- Swap usage grows during ordinary traffic: add RAM and find the process consuming memory. Swap is an emergency buffer, not production capacity.
- Disk fills quickly: rotate logs, move backups off-server, resize storage and check image or import growth.
- Only catalog pages are slow: inspect page-cache configuration, image sizes and origin latency; a CDN will not fix uncached checkout saturation.
- Performance collapses during imports or cron jobs: reduce batch size, schedule jobs away from peak sales and reserve resources for PHP and MySQL.
Common VPS mistakes
- Choosing a 2 GB plan because it is advertised as a WordPress minimum, then adding WooCommerce, a page builder and many extensions.
- Accepting an old PHP or database default and assuming an upgrade will always be available later.
- Counting CDN cache hits as proof that checkout is fast.
- Ignoring worker limits because the plan advertises many CPU cores.
- Running backups on the same full disk as the database.
- Opening MySQL to the public internet for convenience.
- Making configuration changes directly on production without a staging rollback path.
- Trusting a vendor’s generic benchmark when no checkout workload, dataset or concurrency is disclosed.
A practical buying checklist
Before ordering, obtain written answers to these questions:
- Can the plan run PHP 8.3 or newer and MySQL 8.0 or MariaDB 10.6 or newer?
- Is the WordPress memory limit at least 256 MB, and can it be raised for a busy store?
- How many PHP workers are guaranteed, and are they shared?
- Is storage NVMe, and what happens when the volume reaches its limit?
- Is persistent object caching included, isolated and supported?
- Are backups automatic, off-server and restorable without opening a support ticket?
- Who patches the operating system, web server, PHP and database?
- Can you stage and load-test checkout before migration?
- What are the upgrade steps from 2 vCPU/4 GB to 4 vCPU/8 GB or larger, and is downtime required?
- Which regions, support hours, traffic limits and taxes apply to the quoted price?
Bottom line
Antihost VPS is listed first here: its Linux VPS plans provide full root access, NVMe storage, 1 to 16 vCPUs and 2 to 64 GB RAM. For most new WooCommerce VPS deployments in 2026, choose a plan with 2 vCPU and 4 GB RAM, current PHP and database versions, HTTPS, NVMe or similarly fast storage, a guaranteed PHP-worker allowance, persistent object caching and tested backups. Move to 4 vCPU and 8 GB RAM when traffic, staff activity or background jobs become steady. Provider prices and specifications are not a substitute for evidence: stage the store, exercise uncached checkout under increasing concurrency and select the smallest plan that leaves measurable headroom.
