Best VPNs With Port Forwarding Support in 2026: Which Fits Your Setup?

Proton VPN, PIA, and TorGuard document port forwarding with different platform, server, and setup limits. Compare the details before choosing.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Proton VPN, Private Internet Access (PIA), and TorGuard each document VPN port forwarding, but they suit different setups. Proton is the clearest fit if you use a supported desktop app and can work with a port that may change after reconnecting. PIA documents in-app port requests on eligible server locations, while TorGuard offers a client-area workflow with TCP or UDP selection. None can be called the best overall on the available feature documentation alone; check your operating system, server location, port persistence needs, and service before subscribing.

Which VPNs allow port forwarding?

Port forwarding lets an incoming connection reach an application or device through a VPN provider’s firewall. It is useful for some peer-to-peer (P2P) clients, multiplayer games, and self-hosted services. It does not guarantee faster downloads or better connections: results depend on the application, peers, network, and server.

The forwarded port must be configured in the application that will receive connections. This is separate from port forwarding on a home router: a router rule opens a path through your local network, while a VPN provider’s rule opens a path through its VPN endpoint.

Provider Documented fit and setup Important limitation
Proton VPN Port forwarding is documented for paid plans on Windows, macOS, and Linux. Connect to a P2P server and configure the assigned port in your application. Proton’s port-forwarding guide The port usually changes after reconnecting, so applications may need updating. macOS support is described as early access. Proton’s port-forwarding guide
Private Internet Access (PIA) Its documentation describes requesting an automatically assigned port in the app. PIA lists P2P, some multiplayer games, and self-hosted services as possible uses. Windows setup; Android setup Port forwarding is available only on supported VPN server locations and not on US server locations, according to PIA’s Windows guide. The cited setup instructions are platform-specific; do not assume every app or device supports it.
TorGuard Port forwarding is documented for shared and dedicated IPs. Users request and manage ports in the client area and choose TCP or UDP for the service. TorGuard port-forwarding guide; TorGuard knowledge base Ports below 2048 are not allowed, and some higher ports may be reserved, according to its knowledge base.
AirVPN Worth investigating if you need account-based configuration or multiple forwards; those details are reported by Top10VPN. Top10VPN’s comparison The specific limits and current terms should be verified with AirVPN before relying on them; the details cited here come from a secondary comparison.

For broader context, TechRadar’s 2026 roundup also identifies Proton VPN as a service that offers port forwarding. Its ratings and speed results are TechRadar’s, not comparative testing presented here. TechRadar’s VPN roundup

How to choose a VPN with port forwarding

Before comparing general VPN features, confirm that port forwarding works for your particular device and connection. Support can vary by operating system, subscription, server, and provider changes.

  • Check platform and plan: Proton documents paid-plan support for Windows, macOS, and Linux, with macOS marked early access. PIA’s cited setup guides cover Windows and Android, not every platform.
  • Check server eligibility: Proton requires a P2P server. PIA says only supported locations qualify and excludes US server locations in its Windows guide.
  • Decide whether a changing port is acceptable: Proton says the active port usually changes on reconnect. If your service depends on a fixed port, confirm current provider behavior before choosing.
  • Consider setup and protocol: Proton and PIA document in-app setup for the platforms covered by their guides. TorGuard uses its client area and asks users to select TCP or UDP to match the service.
  • Match the feature to your use: Identify the application that needs inbound connections, then check its own instructions for the port and protocol it requires.

How to set up port forwarding on a VPN

The exact controls differ by provider. These are the documented workflows; consult the linked current provider instructions for interface details.

Proton VPN

  1. Use a paid plan and a supported Windows, macOS, or Linux app; note that Proton describes macOS support as early access.
  2. Connect to a P2P server.
  3. Enable or locate port forwarding in the app and note the assigned port.
  4. Enter that port in the application accepting inbound connections. Proton’s BitTorrent guidance includes binding qBittorrent to the correct interface to reduce the risk of IP leaks. Proton port-forwarding instructions; Proton BitTorrent guidance
  5. After reconnecting, check the active port and update the application if it has changed.

Private Internet Access

  1. Open PIA’s app on a platform covered by its setup guide and choose a supported VPN server location.
  2. Enable the app’s port-forwarding request setting; PIA assigns a port automatically.
  3. Use the assigned port in the application that needs inbound access. The available guide explains the feature for Windows and Android, but the precise controls may differ. PIA Windows instructions; PIA Android instructions

TorGuard

  1. Sign in to TorGuard’s client area and open its port-forwarding controls.
  2. Request and manage a port, choosing TCP or UDP to match the application.
  3. Configure the application to use that port, then confirm the service is listening as intended. Ports below 2048 are unavailable, and some higher ports may be reserved. TorGuard setup guide; TorGuard port limits

What are the security risks of opening a port?

Port forwarding is a connectivity feature, not a privacy upgrade. Any service listening on the forwarded port may receive internet traffic, so a vulnerable or poorly configured service can create a point of exposure. TorGuard advises using strong passwords and two-factor authentication where available, restricting source IP addresses when feasible, keeping exposed services updated, and monitoring access. TorGuard’s security guidance

Enable forwarding only for a service that needs inbound connections. Configure the application itself securely and keep its access controls and updates in place.

What the available evidence does—and does not—establish

Provider documentation confirms that these services describe port-forwarding features and explains some eligibility and setup conditions. It does not establish which provider is fastest, safest, most reliable, or best overall, nor does it provide comparable tests of connection quality, privacy, or support. Treat the providers above as feature matches, not a performance ranking, and recheck current terms before choosing because availability can change.
