There is no single consensus winner among 2026 torrenting-VPN reviews. RTINGS names Windscribe its best tested option, PCWorld chooses NordVPN, and TechRadar ranks ExpressVPN first. Those are separate publishers’ conclusions, not results from testing conducted for this article. The right choice depends on whether you prioritize privacy evidence, speed, P2P access, or advanced controls such as port forwarding.
How the 2026 recommendations compare
The table summarizes what each cited publisher or provider says; it does not put the services through one shared test. Rankings and measured performance can differ because publishers use different methods.

| VPN | What the source says | Potential fit | Trade-offs or qualifications |
|---|---|---|---|
| Windscribe | RTINGS names it the best VPN for torrenting among the services it tested. RTINGS highlights P2P support, a kill switch, and port forwarding. | Consider it if you want a service singled out specifically for torrenting and value port forwarding. | RTINGS’ verdict is its own assessment, not a consensus ranking. Its current page lists scores of 9.3 for Torrent, 9.2 for Private Browsing, 9.4 for Policies & Practices, 8.6 for Security, and 7.4 for Speed; scores can change. |
| NordVPN | PCWorld names it its overall pick, citing speed, privacy and security features, and audits. | Consider it if you want PCWorld’s balance of performance and privacy features. | PCWorld flags high monthly and renewal prices and differences in features across platforms and tiers. Check the current plan terms for your devices. |
| ExpressVPN | TechRadar ranks it first and reports P2P support on all servers. PCWorld calls it a runner-up. Tom’s Guide also discusses provider-specific download and kill-switch checks. | Consider it if broad server P2P availability is important to you. | The first-place and runner-up labels reflect different publications’ judgments, not a contradiction that can be resolved without a shared test. |
| Private Internet Access (PIA) | PCWorld highlights customization and independent no-logs audits. TechRadar describes P2P support across its servers and port forwarding; Tom’s Guide discusses port forwarding and its own speed and kill-switch checks. | Potentially suited to users who want configuration choices or port forwarding. | Sources differ on speed and ease-of-use trade-offs. Compare the review methods and your own needs rather than treating one result as definitive. |
| Proton VPN | Proton says it offers P2P servers and that dedicated P2P server access requires a paid plan. PCWorld says its free plan does not allow P2P. | Consider it if you want a provider that clearly distinguishes P2P access by plan. | Proton’s statements about its own speed, server counts, and privacy are provider claims, not independent findings. Verify current plan and server details before subscribing. |
| Mullvad | PCWorld names it its privacy pick and notes good speeds and an inexpensive monthly plan. | Consider it if privacy is your leading priority. | PCWorld identifies a smaller network and weaker streaming unblocking as trade-offs. The cited comparison does not establish a current price here. |
RTINGS says it has published reviews for more than 20 VPN services since 2025. Security.org’s 2026 comparison says it covered 20 VPNs. These describe those publishers’ review scope; they are not a market-wide count or a shared ranking.

Confirm that your plan permits P2P
Check the provider’s current terms and plan details, not just a general claim that it supports torrenting. Access may depend on the plan or server. The distinction is explicit for Proton VPN: its provider page says dedicated P2P servers require a paid plan, and PCWorld says P2P is not allowed on its free plan.

Look beyond a “no logs” slogan
Read what the privacy policy says the service collects and retains, then look for independent audits or other verification. PCWorld cites audits in its NordVPN and PIA assessments, and names Mullvad its privacy pick. Treat each as a publisher’s evaluation; an audit claim is most useful when you can check its scope, date, and what it actually examined.
Check the kill switch and leak testing
A kill switch is intended to stop traffic from continuing outside the VPN if the connection drops. Look for tests of that behavior and checks for IP or DNS leaks, rather than assuming a feature name guarantees protection in every app or situation. Security.org says it assessed privacy features and tested for leaks; Tom’s Guide describes provider-specific kill-switch checks.

Compare speed results only when the test method is clear
Download performance depends on the test setup and conditions, so a speed result from one reviewer is not a guarantee for your connection. Security.org says it tested speeds, while Tom’s Guide describes provider-specific P2P downloads. PCWorld cites speed as part of its NordVPN selection, but the reviewed comparisons do not provide one common result measured across all six services here.

Decide whether you need port forwarding
Port forwarding may be useful to some advanced P2P users, but it is not a requirement for everyone. RTINGS describes it for Windscribe; TechRadar and Tom’s Guide discuss it for PIA. Tom’s Guide notes that only some mainstream providers offer it. Because opening a port can create additional security exposure, use the feature only if you understand the implications and need it.

Check practical plan details
Before paying, confirm support for your operating systems and devices, simultaneous-use limits, P2P server locations, and which features are included on the exact tier you plan to buy. PCWorld notes platform and tier variation for NordVPN. Prices and renewal terms change, so compare the provider’s current checkout terms rather than relying on an old review’s price.
Why the reviewers name different winners
The labels “best” and “top pick” are conclusions within each publisher’s own comparison, not a universal certification. RTINGS’ page focuses its recommendation on torrenting and identifies P2P support, a kill switch, and port forwarding. PCWorld’s NordVPN pick weighs speed and privacy/security features, while its Mullvad choice emphasizes privacy. TechRadar’s ExpressVPN ranking highlights P2P availability across servers. Different priorities and test procedures can produce different winners without any one source being automatically wrong.

Methodology matters as much as the headline. Security.org says it assessed P2P networks, privacy features, and no-log policies, and tested speed and leaks. Tom’s Guide describes provider-specific P2P downloads and kill-switch checks. Treat those as each publisher’s reported methods; results from separate reviews are not directly interchangeable.

BitTorrent is a file-sharing protocol; legality depends on what is being shared, the rights involved, and the applicable jurisdiction. Sharing authorized files or public-domain works is different from distributing copyrighted material without permission. A VPN does not grant rights to content or make infringement lawful. Use P2P only for material you are entitled to share.
Quick Recap
Best Value
- Next-Gen Gigabit Wi-Fi 6 Speeds: 2402 Mbps on 5 GHz and 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz bands ensure smoother streaming and faster downloads; support VPN server and VPN client¹
- A More Responsive Experience: Enjoy smooth gaming, video streaming, and live feeds simultaneously. OFDMA makes your Wi-Fi stronger by allowing multiple clients to share one band at the same time, cutting latency and jitter.²
- Expanded Wi-Fi Coverage: 4 high-gain external antennas and Beamforming technology combine to extend strong, reliable, Wi-Fi throughout your home.
- Improved Battery Life: Target Wake Time helps your devices to communicate efficiently while consuming less power.
- Improved Cooling Design: No heat ups, no throttles. A larger heat sink and redefined case design cools the WiFi 6 system and enables your network to stay at top speeds in more versatile environments.
A practical way to make the choice
- Start with permission. Verify that P2P is allowed on the plan and on the servers you intend to use.
- Set your priority. Use the comparison table to identify the publisher whose criteria best match your needs: RTINGS for a torrenting-specific pick, PCWorld for its overall or privacy picks, or TechRadar for its ExpressVPN recommendation.
- Verify protections. Read the privacy policy, check independent verification where available, and look for kill-switch and IP/DNS leak testing.
- Match advanced features to your use. Choose port forwarding only if you need it and are comfortable managing the additional exposure.
- Review current terms. Confirm device support, tier limits, server access, and recurring price before subscribing.
