The right pick depends on what matters most: streaming, speed, privacy, or cost. This is a curated five-service guide based on that comparison—not a claim that Test-Aankoop tested only five products.
How these VPN picks were assessed
Test-Aankoop published its Belgian comparison on 24 February 2026. It says it tested eight paid services: CyberGhost VPN, ExpressVPN Advanced, NordVPN Plus, NortonVPN Standard, Private Internet Access, ProtonVPN Plus, Surfshark One, and Windscribe Pro. Its assessment covered Windows and macOS computers and Android and iOS devices, considering speed, impact on device performance, features, ease of use, safety, privacy, and price. The findings below are that consumer group’s reported results, not independent testing by this article. Read the Test-Aankoop comparison.

The five selections below focus on the comparison’s overall winner, Best Buy picks, privacy findings, and streaming results. ExpressVPN Advanced is also identified by Test-Aankoop as a strong streaming option, so this is not an exhaustive ranking of every service in its test.

Which VPN should you choose?
| Service | Best fit | What Test-Aankoop reported | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| ProtonVPN Plus | Best overall balance | Overall winner, with a score of 88/100 in the comparison’s ranking section. | Test-Aankoop could not access VRT MAX from abroad with Proton VPN during its test. |
| Surfshark One | Speed and streaming | Best Buy; especially strong speed and among the comparison’s leading streaming services. | Check the current subscription term, renewal price, and included features. |
| Private Internet Access (PIA) | Lower price and privacy priorities | Best Buy, described as the cheapest VPN tested, and named among privacy-oriented choices. | Test-Aankoop found below-par speed on every server it tested. |
| Windscribe Pro | Privacy and streaming priorities | Third in the comparison’s top three; included among strong streaming options. Test-Aankoop reported that it collected no data in its evaluation. | The no-data finding describes that test, not a permanent or universal guarantee. |
| NordVPN Plus | Streaming and a Belgian endpoint | Among the comparison’s stronger streaming options; NordVPN publishes a Belgium-specific service page. | Test-Aankoop flagged a macOS certificate configuration as a security concern, while saying this was not evidence of misuse. |
What each pick is best for
ProtonVPN Plus: strongest overall result
Test-Aankoop named ProtonVPN Plus its overall winner and gave it 88/100 in the explicit overall-ranking section. That makes it the clearest starting point if you want a broad result across the comparison’s criteria rather than optimizing for one feature. The score belongs to this comparison and should not be read as a guarantee of performance on every device, network, or use case.

There is a notable streaming exception: in its test, Proton VPN could not access VRT MAX when connecting from abroad. If that Belgian service is your reason for getting a VPN, do not assume this result will meet your need.
Surfshark One: for speed and streaming
Surfshark One received a Best Buy label, and Test-Aankoop reported especially strong speed. It also appeared among the services with stronger streaming results. Those are findings from the comparison period; streaming access can vary by service, location, device, and time.
For a Belgian IP address, Surfshark provides a Belgium-focused service page. That vendor page describes its offering but does not independently compare server availability or performance with rivals: Surfshark’s Belgium VPN page.

Private Internet Access: lower tested price, slower results
Test-Aankoop marked PIA a Best Buy, called it the cheapest service in its paid test, and included it among privacy-oriented choices. The trade-off is speed: the comparison found below-par performance on every server it tested. Consider it if price matters more than top speed, but weigh the total subscription cost against that performance finding.
Windscribe Pro: privacy-oriented choice with a streaming showing
Test-Aankoop placed Windscribe Pro third in its top three and included it among strong streaming services. It also reported that Windscribe collected no data in its evaluation. That is a comparative observation from one test, not proof of complete anonymity or a guarantee about all future data handling.
NordVPN Plus: streaming option with a macOS caveat
NordVPN Plus was among the comparison’s stronger streaming services. The same test noted a certificate configuration in the macOS client that it considered a security concern, while explicitly not treating it as evidence of misuse. Readers using the macOS app should take that qualification into account rather than treating the streaming result as the only relevant finding.

Choose based on what you need a VPN to do
Streaming Belgian services while abroad
Check the exact Belgian service you want to watch, not just a general “streaming” label. Test-Aankoop listed Surfshark One, Windscribe Pro, ExpressVPN Advanced, and NordVPN Plus among stronger streaming services, but reported that Proton VPN could not access VRT MAX from abroad during its test. These outcomes are specific to the test period and are not guarantees for every location, device, or subscription.
Getting a Belgian IP address
If you need websites to see a Belgian IP while you are outside Belgium, confirm that the provider currently offers a Belgium endpoint and that it is available on your chosen plan. NordVPN, Proton VPN, and Surfshark each publish Belgium-specific pages: NordVPN, Proton VPN, and Surfshark. These provider pages do not establish a consistent, independently verified server-count comparison.

Speed and everyday performance
Within Test-Aankoop’s evaluation, Surfshark stood out for speed, whereas PIA was below par on every tested server. Treat those as relative findings from its testing, not predictions for your own connection: your baseline internet speed, distance to a server, device, and network conditions also affect results.
Privacy and data handling
Test-Aankoop named Windscribe Pro, PIA, and Proton VPN among options for privacy priorities and reported no data collection by Windscribe Pro in its test. A VPN shifts some trust from your internet provider or local network to the VPN provider; a privacy-oriented label or no-data observation is not proof of complete anonymity. Review the provider’s current privacy information and decide what data handling you are willing to accept.
Compare the full subscription cost, not just the headline rate
Test-Aankoop warns that VPN prices fluctuate, longer subscriptions may receive discounts, and introductory rates can rise after the initial period. A monthly equivalent advertised for a long term can hide a substantial upfront payment or a higher renewal price. Before subscribing, compare the total amount due for the period you plan to use the service and the price that applies when it renews. No fixed price is listed here because the comparison says offers change.
Best Value
- Next-Gen Gigabit Wi-Fi 6 Speeds: 2402 Mbps on 5 GHz and 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz bands ensure smoother streaming and faster downloads; support VPN server and VPN client¹
- A More Responsive Experience: Enjoy smooth gaming, video streaming, and live feeds simultaneously. OFDMA makes your Wi-Fi stronger by allowing multiple clients to share one band at the same time, cutting latency and jitter.²
- Expanded Wi-Fi Coverage: 4 high-gain external antennas and Beamforming technology combine to extend strong, reliable, Wi-Fi throughout your home.
- Improved Battery Life: Target Wake Time helps your devices to communicate efficiently while consuming less power.
- Improved Cooling Design: No heat ups, no throttles. A larger heat sink and redefined case design cools the WiFi 6 system and enables your network to stay at top speeds in more versatile environments.
Are free VPN plans enough?
Test-Aankoop did not include free VPNs in its paid-service test, so its findings do not establish how these free plans compare in performance, privacy, or streaming. Its article says Proton VPN Free offers unlimited data and Windscribe Free allows up to 10 GB per month. It also notes that free plans commonly restrict data, server selection, or features. A free plan may suit light use, but check its current limits and whether it supports the location and service you need.
Check device support before paying
The comparison evaluated desktop and mobile clients, including Windows, macOS, Android, and iOS. It does not provide a complete, comparable device-limit table for every plan. Confirm the current app availability, simultaneous-connection limit, and plan features directly with the provider if you need to cover several devices or use a less common platform.
