The best VPN for Australia depends on what you need it to do: protect your connection while you are in Australia, provide an Australian IP address while you are abroad, or work with a particular streaming service. Reviewers disagree on a single winner: TechRadar and Security.org put NordVPN first in their Australia guides, while Top10VPN ranks ExpressVPN first. Those are separate editorial judgments, not a shared verdict.
Which VPNs stand out for different needs?
The shortlist below reflects specific reviewers’ findings. It is a starting point, not a guarantee of speed, privacy, or access on your own network.

| VPN | Why it appears on the shortlist | What to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| NordVPN | TechRadar and Security.org rank it first in their Australia comparisons. Security.org identifies it as its security-features choice and reports more than 190 Australian servers across five cities. | The server count is Security.org’s reported finding, not an evergreen network guarantee. Check current locations and your intended use. |
| ExpressVPN | Top10VPN ranks it first overall for Australia and highlights streaming; TechRadar describes its apps as easy to use. | These are review-source judgments. Compatibility with a particular streaming service can change. |
| Proton VPN | Security.org names it its privacy choice. Proton says its apps are open source and that independent app audits are publicly available. | Tom’s Guide says the free plan has unlimited data but does not include Australian server locations. Free access and paid access are different offerings. |
| Windscribe | Top10VPN includes it among its five Australia recommendations. | The cited guide does not establish a specific comparative advantage for every user; check current plan details and suitability for your devices and location. |
Top10VPN says it tested 59 VPNs specifically for Australia and recommends ExpressVPN, NordVPN, Proton VPN, and Windscribe. Its guide also reports more than 30,000 hours of accumulated testing; that figure is not limited to Australia. The test population and accumulated hours describe the publisher’s method, not a guarantee that its ranking will match your connection or priorities.

First decide where you need the VPN connection to appear
There are two distinct use cases. If you are in Australia, you may want a VPN to protect traffic on the connection you are using. If you are overseas, you may need an Australian exit location to reach a service that expects an Australian IP address. Confirm that the VPN offers the required location and that the service permits access from your circumstances; a VPN does not guarantee access.

How to choose by use case
For streaming
Start with the exact service and the country where you will use it, then check whether the provider currently supports that combination. Streaming platforms can block VPN endpoints, and compatibility changes. Top10VPN highlights ExpressVPN for streaming, while Security.org names another provider as its streaming choice; those are review judgments rather than a permanent compatibility promise.
For privacy transparency
Look for concrete, current evidence such as published audit results, open-source apps, and a clearly stated privacy policy. Proton says its apps are open source and independent app audits are publicly available. An audit or a provider’s jurisdiction is not, by itself, a guarantee of anonymity or a substitute for reading the policy that applies to your account.

For free access
Proton VPN’s free plan is described by Tom’s Guide as having no data cap, but its free server countries do not include Australia. If you need an Australian IP, do not assume that the free tier provides one; verify the current free locations and distinguish them from paid locations.
For multiple devices or a household
Compare the simultaneous-connection allowance, router support, and apps for the devices you actually use. These limits vary by service and plan, so confirm them for the Australian plan at checkout. A VPN-compatible travel router may be useful for routing several devices through one VPN-enabled network, but no specific router model or compatibility guarantee is established here.

Security.org’s 2026 Australia guide says its process involved more than 2,500 research hours, more than 50 VPNs reviewed, 300 speed tests, consultation with six experts, and five recommended VPNs. These are the outlet’s declared method figures, not a promise of performance for an individual user. Because TechRadar, Security.org, and Top10VPN reach different top picks, use their assessments as evidence to compare rather than treating any one ranking as an objective universal winner.
