If both screens are connected to one computer, you do not need a special VPN or a second VPN connection: the VPN runs on the computer, not on each display. If you mean two separate computers or other internet-connected devices, compare the VPN’s supported operating systems and simultaneous-connection limit.
Does a second monitor count as another VPN device?
No. A monitor connected to a laptop or desktop is a display, not an independent internet endpoint. Install and use a VPN app on the computer; its network traffic is what the VPN can route. The number of monitors does not use up additional VPN connections.

Choose a service based on the computer’s operating system and the VPN app it supports. A second monitor alone is not a reason to buy a router or a plan with a higher device limit.

- Operating-system support: Check that the provider offers an app for each computer you want to protect, and confirm the current app supports your OS.
- Simultaneous connections: This matters when you use multiple independent endpoints at the same time—not when one computer has multiple displays. Providers may set different limits by plan.
- Split tunneling: This feature can send selected apps, IP addresses, or other traffic through the VPN while routing the rest outside it. The available rules and supported operating systems vary by provider.
- Router support: A VPN-capable router can route connected devices through a VPN, including devices without a native VPN app. Depending on setup, those devices use the VPN server location selected on the router.
- Current plan terms: Connection limits, supported platforms, and features can change. Verify them for the exact plan and app before subscribing.
How the providers’ published device limits compare
The figures below are claims in provider documentation, not independent measurements. They describe simultaneous connections, not screens attached to one computer.

These limits are vendor-published plan details and can change. They do not establish which service is fastest or most private, and they are not a performance ranking. Check the provider’s current terms and the specific plan before relying on a limit.
How to keep local devices accessible while using a VPN
If you need to reach a printer, shared drive, or other local-network device while connected to a VPN, check whether the app offers split tunneling or a local-network access setting. The precise controls differ by operating system and provider; confirm that the rule you need is supported on your device before subscribing. Split tunneling can also direct selected internet traffic outside the VPN, so use rules deliberately.

Apple’s security guide describes per-app VPN as a managed-device capability: a device-management service can specify VPN connections for managed apps and particular Safari domains. That is not the same as a consumer VPN app’s controls and should not be assumed to be available on a personal Apple device. Apple Platform Security: VPN overview (published January 28, 2026).
When a VPN router makes sense
A router setup can be useful when several separate devices need VPN coverage, particularly if a device lacks a supported VPN app. It is a network-level choice, not a requirement for using two monitors. Connected devices may all use the VPN location selected on the router, which can be less flexible than choosing a location separately in each device’s app.

For one computer with two displays, use a desktop VPN app. For separate computers, install the app on each and check the plan’s simultaneous-connection limit. Consider router configuration only if you specifically want to route multiple network clients through one VPN setup.

- Count internet-connected devices, not screens. Write down the computers and other endpoints you expect to use at once.
- Check OS and app support. Confirm each computer’s operating system is supported by the provider’s current app.
- Match the connection limit to your endpoints. Compare the current terms for the specific plan rather than assuming the display count affects the limit.
- Check routing controls if needed. Verify split-tunneling rules on your exact OS if some apps or local traffic must bypass the VPN.
- Choose router setup only for a network-level need. Confirm which clients will use the router’s VPN location and whether that arrangement suits them.
No independent speed tests or privacy-audit comparisons are established here, so the connection-limit figures and feature lists do not support naming a fastest or independently tested best VPN. Select based on your devices, required routing behavior, and the provider’s current plan terms.
