No single VPN is best for every MacBook Air owner, and the reviewers who test Mac VPNs disagree on their top pick. Macworld favors Surfshark for value, ExpressVPN for streaming and ease, and Private Internet Access (PIA) for configuration. RTINGS puts Mullvad first for Mac and also covers Proton VPN. Choose by what you do on the laptop: streaming, privacy, tinkering with settings, or covering several devices cheaply.
Quick picks by use case
| If you want… | Provider reviewers point to | Who says so and why |
|---|---|---|
| Best value and a broad feature set | Surfshark | Macworld: modern protocol support and a kill switch. Best pricing needs longer plans, and speeds can vary against premium rivals. |
| Simplest app, streaming access | ExpressVPN | Macworld and TechRadar both call it beginner-friendly and straightforward. |
| Maximum control over settings | PIA | Macworld: split tunneling and custom DNS, though the app can feel less intuitive. |
| Minimal account data, flat-rate pricing | Mullvad | RTINGS: its top Mac recommendation. It uses account-number login, minimal-information positioning and an audit practice. |
| Feature breadth or a free tier | Proton VPN | RTINGS: feature-rich, with latency and policy caveats. The free plan has no manual server-location choice and no torrenting. |
NordVPN also appears in the guides the comparison draws on. Treat the table as reviewer judgment and use-case fit, not a settled consensus.

What macOS already provides
Apple’s VPN security documentation (published January 28, 2026) says VPN services typically need minimal setup on Apple devices. It lists IKEv2/IPsec among the supported options, along with SSL-VPN clients and managed deployment such as VPN On Demand and per-app VPN. Always On VPN is documented for specified managed and supervised platforms, so don’t expect it as a standard consumer switch on your MacBook Air.

A consumer provider’s app adds its own protocols, server network, kill switch and other controls on top of that platform support. That is why the app, and not macOS, is where the providers differ.

How to choose
Check the download source first
Top10VPN reports that some Mac App Store versions of VPN apps omit settings such as an advanced kill switch and split tunneling. If those matter, check the provider’s current feature table and whether it distributes a separate build from its own website. Also confirm the app’s minimum macOS version matches your Air.
Treat speed claims as conditional
Speed depends on your device, network, protocol, server and workload. Macworld found Surfshark smooth in its M3 MacBook Air test. That is one publication’s result, not a guarantee for your connection or location. Test a provider’s trial or refund window on your own network, using what you actually do: video calls, large downloads or streaming.

Judge privacy by evidence, not labels
A “no logs” claim does not prove itself. Read the policy, look at who owns the company and how transparent it is, and check the scope and date of any independent audit. RTINGS discusses audit and policy caveats for providers in its comparison, so read those caveats before you rely on a provider’s marketing.

Match the kill switch and split tunneling to your habits
A kill switch blocks traffic if the VPN drops, which matters on café and hotel Wi-Fi. Split tunneling lets chosen apps bypass the VPN, useful for local devices or banking apps. Surfshark has a kill switch per Macworld, and PIA is the split-tunneling and custom-DNS pick. Confirm each is present in the build you install.

Count devices and total cost
Compare the full-term price, not the monthly headline. Surfshark’s best pricing depends on longer plans per Macworld. Mullvad is described by RTINGS as flat-rate. Check how many simultaneous devices each plan allows if the MacBook Air shares a subscription with a phone or other computers, and what the renewal price is.
Provider profiles
Surfshark
Macworld’s value pick, with modern protocols and a kill switch. Choose it if you want a lot of features at a lower long-term cost and can commit to a longer plan.

ExpressVPN
The easiest option according to Macworld and TechRadar, and Macworld’s streaming pick. Choose it if you want to connect and forget.

Mullvad
RTINGS’s top Mac recommendation. An account number replaces the usual email-and-password signup, and the service positions itself around collecting minimal information. Choose it if anonymity matters more than polish or streaming.
Proton VPN
RTINGS calls it more feature-rich, with latency and policy caveats. Its free plan is a way to try it, but it can’t pick server locations and doesn’t allow torrenting.

VPN discounts change often. TechRadar and Top10VPN show example offers, but those were specific to the pages at the time they were read, so confirm the current price, term length, renewal rate and refund policy on the provider’s own site before buying. Top10VPN says it tested 59 VPNs for its guide, with picks last tested in September 2026. That is its own test set, not a measure of the whole market.
The Bottom Line
For most MacBook Air owners, pick ExpressVPN if you want simplicity, Surfshark if you want value, PIA if you want control, and Mullvad if privacy is the priority. Install from the source that gives you the features you need, and run the provider’s trial on your own network before committing to a long term.
