It means maintaining a short, goal-linked watchlist, checking who is making each claim and on what evidence, and turning only the relevant trends into small, measurable tests. This guide gives you that routine, plus a dated snapshot of the themes the main 2025–2026 sources are reporting.
What the current sources are reporting
Four themes recur in recent platform and industry material: AI shaping both discovery and campaign work, more conversational and visual search, growth in social, creator and commerce-media advertising, and sustained pressure to prove impact. Treat each as a reported trend from a specific publisher, not a universal prescription.

AI-shaped discovery and campaign workflows
Google’s December 2025 outlook, Top digital marketing trends and predictions for 2026, describes consumers searching conversationally with text, images and audio. Google says brands need helpful, authoritative, people-first content that can answer AI-mediated queries, and that marketers should supply high-quality assets for AI-powered campaigns. This is a platform’s perspective on its own ecosystem. Nothing in these sources establishes a guaranteed ranking formula for AI search, so be wary of any acronym sold as one.
IAB’s 2026 Outlook Study (January 2026) surveyed U.S. ad buyers. Its leading challenges include adapting strategy to AI-shaped consumer behavior, understanding generative AI in campaigns, and agentic AI for ad buying or execution. It also reports continued emphasis on cross-platform measurement and incrementality. These are findings about the participating buyers, not a census of all marketing teams.
#1 Best Overall
Social and commerce-media money
The IAB/PwC Internet Advertising Revenue Report: Full Year 2025 (April 2026) puts U.S. social media advertising revenue at $117.7 billion, up 32.6% year over year, and U.S. commerce media advertising revenue at $63.4 billion, up 18.0%. These are U.S. revenue totals, not forecasts. They show where the industry’s money is going, not that a given brand will get better returns there.
Reach figures need attribution
Google reports that 83% of global consumers surveyed said they used Google and/or YouTube daily. That figure comes from an Ipsos survey reported in Google’s own 2025 article, so cite it as such rather than as an independent global census.
How to build a watchlist that stays manageable
Choose six areas at most, and drop any that do not touch your goals:
- Search and discovery
- Paid media
- Social and creators
- Commerce media
- Privacy and data
- Measurement
A local service business may need only search, reviews and measurement. A retailer selling through marketplaces will care more about commerce media. The watchlist should reflect your business model, audience and geography, because those change the answer more than any trend report does.
How to judge a source and a claim
For every item you save, record five things: publisher, publication date, geography, survey population or data scope, and whether it is a finding, a forecast or an opinion. That takes a minute and prevents most misuse.
| Source type | Good for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Platform documentation and announcements (e.g., Google) | What a product does now, policy and feature changes, the platform’s recommended practice | Strategic framing that favors the platform; recommendations are not independent proof of results |
| Industry surveys (e.g., IAB’s outlook) | What buyers say they are prioritizing | Limited population (U.S. ad buyers); stated intentions are not outcomes |
| Industry revenue reports (e.g., IAB/PwC) | Market size and growth by channel | Revenue growth says nothing about effectiveness for your campaign |
| Prior-year trend lists | Background and enduring practices | Predictions go stale; do not use them as current product documentation |
Use dated primary platform documentation for product changes and dated industry reports for market-level claims. Revisit your notes whenever a platform changes a feature, policy or measurement method.
Rank #4
Turn a trend into a test
- Write the question. For example: “Will adding conversational, question-style product content raise qualified organic sessions for our top category?”
- Name the audience and KPI. Tie the KPI to a business goal, not to platform activity.
- Record a baseline and set a time window.
- Cap the budget or effort you will spend.
- Decide the thresholds in advance: what result expands the test, and what result stops it.
- Review and log the outcome, including negative results, so the team does not retest the same idea.
Keep measurement in the routine
Google’s December 2024 measurement guidance, Top digital marketing trends: AI, MMM, and more, recommends aligning on KPIs, mapping media spend and building an experiments calendar. It describes modern marketing mix models as working alongside incrementality testing and attribution to give more detailed media insight. Its trend predictions are dated, but this planning advice still holds up. IAB’s buyer survey points the same way, listing cross-platform measurement and incrementality as live concerns.
Compare options with the same six criteria
When a new channel or tool competes for budget, score it on these. They are editorial guidance drawn from the themes above, not a published scorecard.
Quick Recap
Best Value
- Fit: does it reach your actual audience and suit your business model?
- Incrementality: can you measure what it adds beyond what would have happened anyway?
- Reporting: does it work with your cross-channel reporting?
- Cost and effort: including setup, creative and staff time.
- Data and privacy: what data it needs and whether you can lawfully and comfortably supply it.
- Oversight: how much human review AI-assisted or autonomous work requires, and who is accountable for errors.
A simple cadence
- Weekly (15–30 minutes): scan platform announcements for the channels you actually use.
- Monthly: review test results and update the watchlist.
- Quarterly: re-read the major outlooks and revenue data, then adjust the experiments calendar.
