For a conventional FFmpeg playlist sent to YouTube Live, use H.264 video with AAC audio over RTMPS. Encode with constant bitrate (CBR), progressive scan, square pixels, and a two-second keyframe interval; YouTube’s guidance sets four seconds as the maximum. Choose resolution, frame rate, and bitrate to suit the YouTube settings and the upload connection. The playlist files themselves must also be compatible if you want FFmpeg to concatenate them without re-encoding.
Which “format” do you need to choose?
“Format” can mean a container such as MP4, the audio and video codecs inside a stream, or the protocol used to send a live feed to YouTube. These are separate decisions. An .mp4 extension alone does not make arbitrary playlist files compatible or determine the right live output.

- Live output codecs: H.264 video and AAC audio are a documented baseline for ordinary RTMPS streaming.
- Ingest protocol: RTMPS is YouTube’s recommended secure extension to RTMP.
- Playlist compatibility: FFmpeg’s concat demuxer may avoid re-encoding when the input streams meet its requirements.
YouTube’s broader encoder guidance also lists H.265 and AV1 video and MP3 audio, while its HLS guidance covers additional protocol-specific support. Codec support depends on the ingest protocol and use case; HDR has separate guidance. See YouTube’s live encoder settings and HLS ingestion requirements for current details.

For a standard SDR stream, start with this configuration. Use YouTube’s current settings page to match resolution, frame rate, and video bitrate to your intended stream; the exact bitrate depends on those choices and should not be guessed from a generic preset.

| Setting | Recommended starting point | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Video codec | H.264 | Conservative baseline for RTMPS. |
| Audio codec | AAC | MP3 is also listed in YouTube’s encoder guidance. |
| Rate control | CBR | Use constant bitrate for the live encode. |
| Keyframe interval | 2 seconds | YouTube recommends two seconds and says not to exceed four seconds. |
| Scan and pixels | Progressive scan; square pixel aspect ratio | Follow the selected output resolution and frame rate. |
| Stereo audio | 44.1 kHz sample rate; 128 Kbps | YouTube’s recommendation for stereo AAC/MP3 audio. |
| SDR color | Rec. 709, 8-bit | HDR uses different guidance. |
These are YouTube platform recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular encoder, playlist, or network will remain stable. YouTube’s bitrate guidance varies by resolution and frame rate; consult the linked current table and ensure your upload connection can sustain the chosen stream reliably.
When to use HDR or HLS
For HDR over RTMP(S), YouTube recommends H.265. Its guidance also points to HLS when an encoder lacks the RTMP capabilities required for the HDR workflow. HLS is a separate segmented delivery method and has greater latency than the ordinary RTMPS approach. YouTube’s HLS requirements include TS segments lasting one to four seconds, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, HTTPS POST/PUT requests, and no byte ranges. Unless those capabilities or protocol requirements fit your setup, RTMPS is the simpler conventional choice.

Check playlist files before using stream copy
FFmpeg’s concat demuxer can concatenate compatible files without re-encoding. Before relying on stream copy, inspect every file for matching stream properties, including video and audio codecs, dimensions, frame rate and time base, pixel format, audio sample rate, and channel layout. The FFmpeg FAQ explains the compatibility constraints; it does not promise seamless playback for every set of files. See the FFmpeg FAQ on joining video files and the concat demuxer documentation.
If all inputs match
Use the concat demuxer with a list of input files and stream copy, then send the resulting continuous input to your chosen live encoder configuration. The exact command depends on the playlist and destination; validate it with the actual files rather than assuming that an MP4 container or matching filename suffixes prove compatibility.

- Capacity Display Variance: 500GB external ssd often appears as around 465GB on Windows. MacOS can show full 500 GB capacity. This is binary calculation difference and doesn’t affect SSD hard drive actual physical storage
- 1050 MB/s Speed: Instantly access to your files with blazing-fast 10Gbps external SSD read up to 1050MB/s and write up to 1000MB/s. LED Light indicates USB SSD instant activity
- Data Security: Solid state drives S.M.A.R.T. health diagnostics and adaptive TRIM optimizing data block management ensures consistent write speeds and extends the longevity of the portable SSD
- USB-C & USB-A Cable: Both cables featuring rapid USB 3.2 Gen2, this USB SSD effortlessly bridges devices, enabling seamless cross-platform file transfers and backup between computers, smartphones, tablets and iPhone
- Always Fast: No slowdowns for large file transfers. With SLC caching (25% of current available capacity allocated as high-speed cache), this external SSD delivers steady 10Gbps for transfers within the cache capacity
If inputs do not match
Normalize or re-encode the files to a common stream configuration, or build a filter-based concatenation workflow. Re-encoding adds processing work; the benefit is consistent input parameters for the downstream live encode. No universal quality or performance outcome can be assumed for untested media.
Configure YouTube ingest credentials safely
Use the ingest URL and stream name/key supplied by YouTube Live Control Room or the Live API. Depending on the encoder, the URL and key may be entered separately or combined. Treat the key as a password: do not publish it in a playlist file, command transcript, shared screenshot, or public repository. YouTube documents the ingestion fields in its Live API stream resource documentation.

Test the exact playlist before leaving it live
- Check the files. Inspect every item’s stream properties and confirm the playlist order and paths.
- Run a short end-to-end test. Use the same audio, motion, output settings, encoder, and network path planned for the continuous stream.
- Watch file boundaries. Confirm that transitions do not cause black frames, unexpected pauses, audio gaps, or timestamp problems.
- Check YouTube stream health. Monitor Live Control Room status and messages while the test runs, and resolve warnings before depending on the stream.
- Test operational recovery. Confirm that the process, host, and network behave as expected after a restart or temporary interruption; a command template alone cannot establish continuous reliability.
YouTube recommends testing with audio and movement similar to the planned stream and monitoring stream health during an event. See its live encoder settings and stream-health guidance.
Common problems and what to check
- Concat fails or the output breaks at a file change: compare codec, dimensions, frame rate/time base, pixel format, sample rate, and channel layout across inputs; normalize mismatched files or use a filter-based workflow.
- YouTube reports poor or unstable stream health: check that the encoder’s selected resolution and frame rate match the applicable YouTube guidance, that the upload connection has reliable headroom, and that the encoder is sustaining its configured output.
- Keyframe or encoder warnings: set a two-second keyframe interval and ensure it does not exceed YouTube’s four-second maximum.
- Audio is missing or inconsistent: check that the output uses a supported audio codec and that input files share compatible audio parameters; test the boundaries, not only the middle of one file.
- The encoder cannot connect: re-enter the current ingest URL and stream key from Live Control Room, confirm whether the encoder expects them separately or together, and verify the selected protocol.
- HDR settings do not work as expected: use YouTube’s HDR-specific guidance; for HDR over RTMP(S), YouTube recommends H.265, and HLS has its own encoder and segment requirements.
Copyright and YouTube monetization are separate from technical compatibility
A file that plays correctly through FFmpeg is not automatically cleared for YouTube distribution. Use content you own or have permission to stream, including music and any material included in a playlist. Technical format compliance does not determine whether a channel or stream complies with YouTube’s copyright rules or monetization policies. Review YouTube’s current policies and claims in Studio before running a continuous playlist.
