For an archived live stream you own or have permission to save, start with the platform’s own download option. For more format and file-path control, yt-dlp is the strongest general command-line choice in this guide; Streamlink is better understood as a way to play or extract supported streams through a media player, not as a dedicated VOD archive manager. These methods retrieve an existing replay—they are not instructions for recording someone else’s active broadcast.
Before downloading: confirm the replay and your rights
A pre-recorded live stream is an archived video-on-demand (VOD). Downloading an existing VOD is different from capturing a broadcast while it is happening. Save a local copy only if you own the content or have permission to archive it, and comply with the platform’s rules and any applicable rights, including music rights.

Availability is not guaranteed. A replay may be absent because the channel did not enable archiving, the platform no longer makes it available, your account lacks access, or a downloader cannot retrieve the formats exposed by that site.

Download a Twitch past broadcast
Twitch calls recordings of past streams “Past Broadcasts.” The broadcaster needs to enable Past Broadcast storage for recordings to be available. Twitch provides a menu option to download a video or export it to YouTube; the precise availability depends on the channel and the VOD being accessible to you.

- For a channel you control, enable Past Broadcast storage in the channel’s Twitch settings before the stream you want to preserve.
- Open the channel’s available Past Broadcasts and select the VOD.
- Open the video’s options menu and choose the download option, or choose the YouTube export route if that is the destination you need.
- After download, locate the saved file and check that it plays before deleting or changing any other copy.
Twitch describes saving downloaded VODs locally. Keep the file on a drive with enough free space for its duration and quality; an external drive is optional, not a prerequisite.
Save your own YouTube livestream replay
YouTube says a channel may be provided with the option of archiving live content for later viewing; that wording is not a promise that every livestream will have a replay or a downloadable file. Check whether the replay exists and whether YouTube offers a creator download route for that video in your account. If it does not, do not assume a third-party tool can recover it.

YouTube’s livestream terms require content providers to have the necessary rights for their content, including music licensing rights. A replay being visible does not itself establish permission to make or redistribute a separate copy.

Use yt-dlp for format and file-path control
yt-dlp is a feature-rich command-line audio/video downloader. It supports format selectors and an output path; when a site exposes separate audio and video streams, FFmpeg can merge them. The precise formats available depend on the site and the information its extractor can obtain.

- Install yt-dlp using its official installation instructions, and install FFmpeg if you need separate audio and video streams merged into one file.
- Open a terminal or command prompt. Use the VOD’s URL only if you have permission to save it and can access it normally on the platform.
- Choose a format with yt-dlp’s format-selection options, and set an output template or path so the file is saved where you expect. Check the official documentation for current selector syntax and supported options.
- Run the command and review the output for the selected format and destination. If separate streams are downloaded, FFmpeg must be available for merging.
- Open the resulting file and verify playback, audio, and duration. If the expected quality is unavailable, the extractor may not be receiving that format from the site.
There is no reliable one-command promise for every site or replay: access controls, platform changes, archive availability, and extractor support all affect the result. Use yt-dlp’s official documentation for current commands rather than copying a selector that may not match the VOD.

Streamlink’s official documentation describes piping streams from supported services into a player such as VLC. Its overview lists Twitch and YouTube support, and its quickstart explains selecting stream quality. That makes it a playback/extraction workflow for supported streams; the documentation does not present it as a purpose-built manager for downloading and organizing an archive of VOD files.

Plan storage for the local archive
A downloaded stream becomes a local storage decision. The space required varies with video duration, quality, and retention plans, so check the resulting file size and available drive capacity rather than assuming a fixed amount per hour. yt-dlp lets you choose an output location, and Twitch describes saving downloaded VODs locally. External storage can help as an archive grows, but it is optional.
Troubleshooting downloads
- No Twitch download option or past broadcast: The broadcaster may not have enabled Past Broadcast storage, or the VOD may not be available to your account. Check the channel’s archive settings and access first.
- No YouTube replay: Archiving is not guaranteed for every stream. Confirm that the channel has an available replay before trying a downloader.
- yt-dlp cannot find the requested format: Format availability depends on what the site’s extractor can access. Inspect the available formats using the current yt-dlp documentation and choose among those actually exposed.
- Audio or video is missing from the final file: The site may provide separate streams. Ensure FFmpeg is installed and available to yt-dlp so it can merge them.
- The download fails despite the video being visible: Visibility does not guarantee extractor support. Confirm account access and VOD availability; do not treat any tool as able to retrieve every replay.
- The saved file is missing or the drive fills: Check the output path and free space before retrying. Choose a destination with sufficient capacity for the video and verify the completed file plays.
