Best Video Bitrate for a 24/7 YouTube Music Stream with One Background Image

For a still-image 24/7 YouTube music stream, start with 1080p30 H.264 CBR. YouTube recommends 14 Mbps and lists 5 Mbps minimum; lower rates should be tested.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a 24/7 YouTube music stream with a still background, use 1080p at 30 fps, H.264, CBR as a practical starting point. YouTube’s live-encoding guidance, accessed in 2026, lists 14 Mbps recommended and 5 Mbps minimum for 1080p30 H.264. If you need to conserve upload capacity, 5–6 Mbps may be worth testing with a genuinely static image, but that lower range is a practical inference—not a special YouTube recommendation or guarantee.

If you want YouTube’s recommended quality point, choose 14 Mbps. If reducing the connection load matters more, test a lower rate and confirm that the stream remains healthy.

Which bitrate should you choose?

YouTube’s live bitrate table is based on the resolution and frame rate sent to YouTube, along with the video codec. For the two relevant H.264 settings, its current guidance is:

Live video setting YouTube-listed minimum YouTube-listed recommended bitrate
1080p30, H.264 5 Mbps 14 Mbps
720p30, H.264 3 Mbps 8 Mbps

These are YouTube’s live-ingestion figures, not its separate bitrate table for uploaded videos. They are platform guidance, not a guarantee that a particular connection or encoder will produce a stable stream. YouTube’s live encoder settings are the applicable reference.

When 1080p30 at 14 Mbps makes sense

Use 14 Mbps if you want to match YouTube’s recommended H.264 bitrate for 1080p30 and have enough reliable upload capacity to sustain it. A still background does not change YouTube’s published recommended value.

When a lower 1080p bitrate is worth testing

A static image has little visual movement, so a rate near the published 1080p30 minimum—such as 5–6 Mbps—may be a reasonable way to reduce bandwidth use. That is an inference from the low-motion content and YouTube’s minimum, not an official static-image setting. Check stream health during a test rather than assuming the lower rate will work for every encoder, connection, or audio-visual setup.

When to use 720p30

If your connection cannot reliably support the 1080p target, 720p30 is a lower-bandwidth option: YouTube lists 8 Mbps recommended and 3 Mbps minimum for H.264. Choose the resolution you can deliver steadily rather than pushing a higher target that causes interruptions.

Which encoding settings matter besides bitrate?

  • Rate control: Set the encoder to constant bitrate (CBR), as YouTube specifies for live encoding.
  • Codec: YouTube lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 for video. The bitrate figures above are specifically for H.264.
  • Keyframes: Set a 2-second keyframe interval; YouTube says the interval should not exceed 4 seconds.
  • Frame rate: 30 fps is a reasonable default for a still-image music stream. YouTube supports up to 60 fps, but the cited guidance does not establish a need for 60 fps for this format.
  • Audio: YouTube lists AAC or MP3. Its advanced settings specify stereo at 44.1 kHz and 128 Kbps; for 5.1 audio, they specify 48 kHz and 384 Kbps.
  • Transport: YouTube recommends RTMPS.

These are YouTube’s platform recommendations; they do not establish that a specific encoder has been tested with your setup. The settings are listed in YouTube’s encoder guidance.

How much upload speed do you need?

Your available upload capacity—not your download speed—must sustain the outgoing stream. YouTube recommends leaving room for the primary stream, backup stream, and an additional 20% of capacity. That headroom helps accommodate network variation; it is not a substitute for a reliable connection. YouTube also warns that a connectivity disruption can break a stream. See its streaming tips.

  1. Check your upload speed at the location and time you expect to stream.
  2. Compare the result with the bitrate and headroom you need, allowing for other devices or uploads sharing the connection.
  3. If Wi-Fi is unstable, try a more reliable connection, such as wired Ethernet, and test again. A cable may help with instability; it does not lower the target bitrate.

There is no bitrate published specifically for a 24/7 stream or for a still background. Select a stable setting based on YouTube’s live guidance, your connection, and a test of your own stream.

How to set and validate the stream

  1. Choose resolution and frame rate. Set 1080p30 or 720p30 in your encoder. YouTube detects encoder settings by default; selecting a resolution manually requires a custom stream key and manual settings in Live Control Room.
  2. Set video encoding. Choose H.264 if using the figures above, set CBR, enter the selected bitrate, and set a 2-second keyframe interval (never over 4 seconds).
  3. Set audio and transport. Use AAC or MP3 audio, select the applicable YouTube audio settings, and use RTMPS where supported.
  4. Test before the public stream. YouTube advises, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” Test the actual music and audio chain, as well as the encoder output and still-image scene.
  5. Watch stream health and messages. Confirm that the feed is arriving steadily and address warnings before relying on it for a continuous broadcast.

Testing is especially important if you choose a lower-than-recommended bitrate: the official guidance does not promise that a given lower setting will suit every setup.

Common problems and what to check

  • Stream health reports connection trouble or the broadcast drops: Check upload stability and available headroom, then test again. YouTube cautions that connectivity disruptions can break a stream.
  • The encoder reports a bitrate or resolution mismatch: Confirm the resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate in the encoder. If you manually selected resolution in YouTube, verify that you are using the custom key and manual Live Control Room settings required for that choice.
  • The stream looks no better after raising bitrate: Check that the intended resolution is actually being sent and that YouTube is receiving the expected settings. A higher bitrate alone does not establish a higher-resolution input.
  • Music audio is missing or poor: Verify the encoder’s audio source and that it is sending AAC or MP3 at the settings appropriate to the intended channel format; test the actual music before going live.
