Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

For live-site behavior, Microsoft Clarity offers recordings and heatmaps; for prototype tests and mixed research methods, Maze covers a broader set of study types; for navigation and information architecture, compare card sorting, tree testing, and first-click capabilities; and for interview-led research, look at tools built around live observation. These tools answer different questions, so start with the research task—not a feature checklist.
How to choose a website usability testing tool
Before comparing products, decide whether you are studying a live website, a proposed design, or users’ understanding of the site’s structure. Also establish whether you need a moderator, who will recruit participants, how results will be analyzed and shared, and what integrations, governance, and study scale your team requires.
- Live-site behavior: recordings and heatmaps show patterns in what visitors do on a live property. They do not, on their own, explain why someone struggled or replace a moderated task-based study.
- Prototype validation: choose a platform that supports the study type you want to run against the proposed experience.
- Navigation and information architecture: assess whether the tool supports card sorting, tree testing, or first-click studies for your specific question.
- Interviews and qualitative observation: check session formats, recording and analysis workflows, and participant sourcing.
- Operations: compare seats, study or test limits, integrations, privacy and data-handling requirements, and how results can be shared.
Do not assume a free tier is suitable for every organization. Confirm current plan terms and feature availability directly with the vendor, and review privacy, consent, retention, and data-processing obligations for your jurisdiction and site.

Microsoft Clarity: observe behavior on a live site
Microsoft describes Clarity as providing session recordings and heatmaps, including click and scroll views. That makes it a practical starting point for seeing where visitors interact, hesitate, or fail to engage on a live property. It is behavioral analytics, not a substitute for asking participants to complete tasks while a researcher observes.
Microsoft’s pricing page presents Clarity as free, with unlimited heatmaps, websites, and team members. Microsoft says the service is free because it uses anonymous behavior data to improve its machine-learning products. Review its Clarity overview, pricing, and applicable privacy documentation before deployment. Microsoft also says Clarity should not be used on websites or apps targeting users under 18.

UserTesting: evaluate test-based and team-based enterprise plans
UserTesting’s official plans distinguish test-based consumption from team-based unlimited plans. Its page says pricing varies with users, plan type, and features, so the right comparison depends on how your organization expects to run studies and who needs access. See UserTesting plans for current details. Its partner program describes technology and service provider partnerships; that alone does not establish an editorial referral offer.

| Your main question | Starting point | Why it fits | What to verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| Where do visitors click, scroll, or encounter friction on the live site? | Microsoft Clarity | Microsoft lists recordings and heatmaps, including click and scroll views. | Privacy and data handling, suitability for your audience, and current plan terms. |
| How do users respond to a prototype or a mix of research activities? | Maze | Its guide lists prototype testing, surveys, interviews, card sorting, tree testing, mobile testing, and analysis features. | Current study limits, seats, enterprise terms, and whether your required method is included. |
| Can users understand or navigate the site structure? | Compare Optimal Workshop and other information-architecture options | Maze’s comparison specifically flags Optimal Workshop for navigation and information architecture. | Support for the particular card sort, tree test, or first-click study you plan to run. |
| What do participants say and do during an interview or diary study? | Lookback | Maze’s comparison describes it as suitable for live observation-heavy interviews and diary-style qualitative research. | Session format, analysis workflow, recording needs, and participant sourcing. |
| How should a larger team plan test consumption and access? | UserTesting | Its official page distinguishes test-based and team-based unlimited plans. | Current pricing for your user count, plan type, and required features. |
The starting points above are not interchangeable rankings: a heatmap cannot tell you everything a moderated study can, and a prototype tool will not automatically answer a navigation question unless it supports the relevant method.

Use a screenshot API when the task is visual capture, not usability research
A screenshot API can help developers capture a page for QA, documentation, or visual workflows, but it is not a replacement for participant-based testing. If you need a screenshot tool alongside your usability research, try ScreenshotNeo first: it removes cookie banners, popups, and chat widgets before capture, and only clean shots are billed.
Or skip the browser setup
Make a screenshot with one GET request. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options.
Quick Recap
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
ScreenshotNeo removes cookie banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before the shot. Bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are never billed. Its MCP server lets AI agents use screenshot tools, and 1,000 screenshots a month are free with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Sign up for ScreenshotNeo free.
