How to Find Bugs on a Website: A Practical Guide

A practical workflow for finding website bugs with Chrome DevTools, Lighthouse, accessibility checks, and clear reproducible reports.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To find bugs on a website, reproduce a specific problem, inspect the browser’s Console and Network panel for clues, and use Lighthouse for a baseline audit. Then check accessibility with both automated tools and human review, and report what happened with enough detail for someone else to repeat it. Browser tools help narrow down causes; they do not diagnose every issue automatically.

Start with one page and one task

Choose the page and action connected to the suspected problem: for example, submitting a form, opening a menu, or loading an image. Test the behavior rather than browsing aimlessly.

  1. Write down the page URL and the task you are trying to complete.
  2. Record what you expected to happen and what actually happened.
  3. Repeat the same steps. If the problem is intermittent, note conditions that may matter, such as the browser, device, account state, or network connection.

A reproducible symptom is more useful than a general report that a site “seems broken.”

Inspect browser errors and network requests

Check the Console

In Chrome, open DevTools and select the Console tab. Look for errors that appear when you repeat the affected action. An error is a clue, not proof of the cause: it may come from an unrelated script, so connect it to the symptom and the steps that produced it.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Inspect the Network panel

Use the Network panel to record and inspect requests. Reproduce the issue while recording, then select relevant requests to review their status, headers, response, and timing. A failed request can explain missing content or a nonworking action, but a status alone does not establish why it failed. Chrome’s guides explain how to inspect requests and alter loading behavior: Network panel overview and Inspect network activity.

If the complaint concerns slow or incomplete loading, test under a slower connection or with the cache disabled in DevTools. Compare what changes and note the conditions; this can help distinguish a loading issue from a repeatable application error.

Use Lighthouse to establish an audit baseline

Run Lighthouse from Chrome DevTools to review a page across performance, accessibility, best practices, and SEO. Treat the report as a starting point for investigation, not a guarantee that all bugs have been found. Chrome recommends establishing a baseline, changing one thing at a time, and auditing again to see what changed: Lighthouse: Optimize website speed.

Keep the page and test conditions as consistent as practical when comparing audits. If you change several things between runs, it becomes harder to tell which change affected the result.

Check accessibility with automation and people

Automated accessibility evaluation can flag potential problems efficiently, but a clean scan does not prove that a website is accessible. W3C states that no evaluation tool alone can determine whether a site meets accessibility standards; human judgment is required. Its guidance covers both ongoing accessibility evaluation and selecting evaluation tools.

Pair scans with hands-on checks

  • Try to navigate and use the relevant page with a keyboard, without a mouse.
  • Check whether the task is understandable and workable for a person using the site, not just whether an automated scan reports findings.
  • Use a tool suited to the scope and purpose of the evaluation; for broad or important reviews, combine tools and manual assessment.

When choosing an accessibility tool, consider what it evaluates (automatically, manually, or through simulation), what it covers (a page, a sample, a whole site, or content behind a login), its supported standards, the skill needed to use it, its reporting, and whether it is free or paid. W3C’s evaluation tools directory lists options, including BrowserStack Web Accessibility Testing, described there as supporting testing across pages, including behind logins, and screen-reader testing. Product details can change; use the directory as a starting point, not as an endorsement or a requirement to buy a service.

Automate repeatable checks when they are worth maintaining

If you already have a browser test suite, you can integrate automated accessibility scans so they run repeatedly as the site changes. Playwright documents running axe scans within Playwright tests and points to manual assessment as a separate part of evaluation: Playwright accessibility testing. This approach is most useful for developers and teams prepared to maintain automated tests; someone investigating one page can begin with DevTools and hands-on checks instead.

Keep security testing separate and authorized

Finding visible functional, loading, or accessibility issues is not the same as testing a web application’s security. Security testing is a specialized discipline. Only test systems when you have authorization, and use a dedicated reference such as the OWASP Web Security Testing Guide.

Write a report someone can reproduce

There is no universal report format established by the sources cited here, but these practical details make an issue easier to investigate:

  • The affected page or URL.
  • Browser and device used.
  • Exact steps to reproduce the issue.
  • Expected behavior and actual behavior.
  • Whether it happens every time or intermittently, and any conditions you noticed.
  • A screenshot or relevant Console or Network clue, if it is safe to share.

Include only evidence relevant to the problem. Before sharing screenshots or request details, check that they do not expose private information, credentials, or sensitive account data.

Or skip the browser setup

For a screenshot of a page, ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API and MCP server. Make one GET request for an image or PDF; the API parameters are documented at ScreenshotNeo docs.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

ScreenshotNeo removes cookie banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, timeouts, and cache hits are not billed. Its MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots, and the Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. A screenshot can document what a page looked like, but it does not replace reproducing an interactive bug or inspecting browser errors.
