For two people in the same room with separate phones, choose DUAL!. For repeatable co-op action, choose Soul Knight. For a shared world, choose Minecraft. Long-distance players who want many short games should try Plato, while Back2Back is the most explicitly built for exactly two people. Among Us works online or over local Wi-Fi, but its official player range starts at four.
This guide separates one-device play, local multiplayer between phones and internet play, then explains cost, safety and setup requirements. Store ratings, prices, download counts and update dates can change; the snapshots below were checked against Google Play listings on August 18, 2026.
Choose by connection first
| Game | Best for | Players and connection | Mode | Cost and purchase note |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| DUAL! | Two people together with separate phones | Two; local Wi-Fi or Bluetooth | Competitive and co-op | Ads and in-app purchases; one player can unlock the full version for co-op DEFEND and DEFLECT |
| Soul Knight | Action co-op and repeated runs | Two-player online co-op or offline LAN; also supports three- and four-player teams | Co-op shooter/roguelike | Ads and in-app purchases, including random-item disclosures |
| Minecraft | A long-term shared world | Online Bedrock multiplayer and cross-platform play | Co-op building, survival and exploration | Paid download plus in-app purchases; price varies by country |
| Plato | Long-distance variety | Online friend challenges and group play | Board, card, sports and party games | Installable with in-app purchases; the listing describes ad-free, non-pay-to-win play |
| Back2Back | A game designed specifically for two | Two; each player uses a separate phone | Co-operative racing/action | In-app purchases; about 100,000-plus downloads and a 4.5 rating in the captured listing |
| Among Us | A group that includes two readers | 4–15; online or local Wi-Fi | Social deduction | Free install with ads and in-app purchases |
“Two-player” can mean one shared screen, two nearby devices, or two remote accounts. It can also mean co-operation or direct competition. Those differences matter more than a generic multiplayer label.
Best local games for two Android phones
DUAL! — best local two-phone game
DUAL! is built around two phones facing each other. Its listing confirms local Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, with competitive DUEL and co-operative DEFEND and DEFLECT modes. Bluetooth is identified as a beta feature and may not work with every device, so Wi-Fi is the safer first choice.
#1 Best Overall
- WIDE SCREEN COMPATIBILITY — PHONE TO TABLET: X5 Lite is a versatile phone controller that stretches up to 213mm to fit iPhone 15/16, most Android phones, iPad mini 6/7, and compatible Android tablets. Secure Type-C connection keeps gameplay stable and responsive.
- MOBILE, CLOUD & REMOTE GAMING: Play supported mobile games like Zenless Zone Zero, or stream console and PC games through Xbox Game Pass, Steam Link, Moonlight, and remote play. Enjoy physical controls wherever you play.
- HALL EFFECT STICKS — PRECISE CONTROL: GameSir Hall Effect sensing sticks deliver smooth 360° control for accurate aiming, movement, and camera adjustments. Built for fast-paced mobile games and streamed console or PC titles.
- LIGHTWEIGHT & ERGONOMIC — 135.4G: At just 135.4g, X5 Lite stays lightweight during extended gaming. Ergonomic, laser-engraved textured grips provide a secure, comfortable hold at home or on the go.
- CUSHIONED MEMBRANE CONTROLS — COMFORTABLE & QUIETER: Cushioned membrane buttons and triggers provide comfortable feedback for repeated inputs while keeping operation quieter. Ideal for extended sessions or gaming in shared spaces.
The free version contains ads and in-app purchases. The developer says only one player needs the full unlock for DEFEND and DEFLECT with another player. The listing also documents manual IP discovery when a Wi-Fi lobby is not found and Android-settings pairing for Bluetooth. It was updated May 4, 2026. See the current Google Play listing.
Soul Knight — best local action co-op
Soul Knight offers two-player online co-op and offline LAN multiplayer. A pair can play together without a remote server when the local network works, while larger teams of three or four are also supported. Its top-down roguelike structure gives the game considerably more replay value than a short party round.
It is a combat-heavy game rather than a gentle family diversion. The listing includes ads, in-app purchases and disclosure of random items, which may matter when choosing a game for children. Check its Google Play details.
Back2Back — most explicitly built for two
Back2Back says it is exclusively for two players, with each person using a separate phone in co-operative racing and action challenges. That focus makes it a better conceptual fit than games designed mainly for larger lobbies. Its smaller install base means less established long-term history than Minecraft, Plato or Soul Knight, so treat it as a specialist pick rather than an objective overall winner. The captured listing showed approximately 100,000-plus downloads, a 4.5-star rating and in-app purchases. Open the listing.

Best online games for two people in different places
Plato — best online collection
Plato puts more than 50 online games in one app, including chess, checkers, pool, carrom, cards, backgammon, dominoes, mini golf and darts. Direct friend challenges, group chats and voice chat make it practical for a couple or two friends who want short sessions without installing a separate app for every genre. It was updated August 12, 2026.
The Google Play listing describes ad-free play and no pay-to-win system; those are developer claims, not an independent audit. The app also exposes users to social features, so review its Teen rating and interaction settings before giving it to a child. View Plato on Google Play.
Minecraft — best long-term shared world
The Android app is Bedrock Edition. Its listing describes creative and survival modes, online multiplayer, building, crafting, farming, exploration and cross-platform play. It is the strongest choice when two players want an ongoing project rather than a ten-minute match, but it requires more learning and multiplayer setup than the other recommendations.
Minecraft is a paid download with additional in-app purchases. The displayed price depends on storefront and country; a captured regional page showed €6.99, so do not reuse that figure as a US price. Account, server and Marketplace requirements can also vary. Check the price and current requirements in your region.

Among Us — works with two, but is not a two-player game
Among Us supports online and local Wi-Fi matches for 4–15 players. Two readers can join the same lobby, but a pair alone cannot start the normal game. It is therefore a group recommendation, not an exactly-two recommendation. The listing discloses user interaction and digital purchases, in addition to ads and in-app purchases. See the official player range.
What about one phone or tablet?
Same-device multiplayer may mean simultaneous shared-screen controls, split screen, hot-seat turns or passing the device. The current listings in this shortlist do not confirm a same-device mode for DUAL!, Soul Knight, Back2Back, Plato, Minecraft or Among Us. Do not install them expecting two people to share one touchscreen.
Google Play Games includes built-in titles such as Solitaire, Minesweeper, Snake, PAC-MAN, Cricket and Whirlybird, but these are not presented as a guaranteed two-player catalog. Check the current Play Games app for what is available on your device.
How local multiplayer connections differ
- Same Wi-Fi: Both phones join the same router network; this is usually the most reliable local method.
- Phone hotspot: Useful without a router, although some games fail to discover hotspot clients.
- Bluetooth: Convenient nearby play, but compatibility and permissions vary.
- Offline LAN: Local networking without a remote game server; it still requires both devices to be configured correctly.
- Online: Internet access, and sometimes accounts, matchmaking or private-room codes, are required.
Set up a local Android game
- Install the same game and update it on both phones.
- Connect both devices to the same Wi-Fi network, or connect the second phone to the first phone’s hotspot.
- Temporarily disable VPNs and check that mobile-data or hotspot restrictions are not blocking local traffic.
- Open the game’s local, LAN or nearby-player mode and create a lobby on one phone.
- Join from the second phone. For Bluetooth, pair the devices in Android Settings before opening the game.
- If discovery fails, use manual IP entry when the game offers it. DUAL!’s listing specifically recommends checking the shared network and manual IP discovery; its hotspot behavior was improved in version 1.6.0.
- Confirm both phones have compatible game versions and grant requested nearby-device or Bluetooth permissions.
Free, paid and subscription choices
“Free” usually means free to download, not free of ads, purchases or accounts. DUAL! uses a one-time unlock for its full modes; Soul Knight and Among Us combine ads with in-app purchases; Plato is installable with in-app purchases; and Minecraft is a paid download with optional purchases.

- Hall Effect Joysticks and Triggers
- Refined bumpers and D-pad. Light and tactile.
- 2 Pro back paddle buttons
- Profile button. Wear-resistant metal joystick rings. Turbo function.
Google Play Pass advertises more than 1,000 games and apps, removes ads and in-app purchases from catalog titles, includes paid titles at no extra charge and lets a family manager share access with up to five other family members. Catalog and offers vary by country and account, so verify the Play Pass badge for each game rather than assuming inclusion. See Google’s Play Pass terms.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Safety, age and chat considerations
- Plato: Rated Teen, with simulated gambling, user interaction, voice/chat features and in-app purchases listed.
- Among Us: Includes online interaction, local Wi-Fi play and digital-purchase disclosures; use privacy and chat controls for younger players.
- Soul Knight: Combat, ads, purchases and random-item disclosures make it less suitable for a low-pressure children’s recommendation.
- Minecraft: Multiplayer servers, chat and Marketplace content require account and parental-control decisions.
- DUAL! and Back2Back: Their separate-phone design reduces the need for public matchmaking, but review each app’s current permissions and purchase prompts.
Do controllers help?
Controller support is not confirmed for these recommendations by the supplied official listings, and Android compatibility can vary by game version, phone and controller model. A Bluetooth or USB-C controller cannot create local multiplayer unless the game supports multiple inputs. Controllers are most plausibly useful for touch-heavy action or Minecraft, not for DUAL!’s two-screen design. If you buy one, verify Android compatibility and the specific game’s input support first.

- Same room, repeatable combat: Soul Knight
