A Teredo Tunneling Pseudo-Interface — This device cannot start. (Code 10) warning usually indicates a disabled or misconfigured Teredo component, service, policy, VPN, security product, or network path—not a missing hardware driver. Your normal web connection can continue working while Xbox party chat or multiplayer features fail. Start by checking whether you need Teredo, then reset it with Windows’ built-in commands.
First, determine whether Teredo matters
Teredo is an IPv6 transition technology that can tunnel IPv6 traffic through NAT when native IPv6 is unavailable. For home users, its most visible role is Xbox Live party chat and some multiplayer connectivity. Microsoft notes that a Teredo failure does not automatically break ordinary internet access: browsing, email, streaming, and other IPv4 traffic may work normally. See Microsoft’s Teredo troubleshooting guidance.
If you do not use Xbox networking or another application that specifically depends on Teredo, a Device Manager warning may be harmless. Avoid invasive registry or router changes solely to remove a cosmetic entry.
Check the actual Teredo state
Open Windows Terminal, Command Prompt, or PowerShell as administrator and run:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?

#1 Best Overall
netsh interface Teredo show state
Record the State, Type, Server name, Client type, and any error text. “Disabled” points to a local setting or policy; “failed to resolve server name” points toward the server-name or hosts-file checks later in this article.
Reset Teredo with the supported procedure
On current Windows versions, Teredo is a built-in networking component. Do not begin by downloading a “Teredo driver” or using Device Manager’s Add legacy hardware wizard. Microsoft’s documented Windows 10-era procedure is to disable Teredo, remove a hidden broken adapter if it exists, restart, and re-enable the default configuration. Windows may recreate the adapter automatically.
- Open an elevated terminal and run:
netsh interface Teredo set state disable
- Open Device Manager.
- Choose View > Show hidden devices.
- Expand Network adapters.
- If present, uninstall entries named Teredo Tunneling Pseudo-Interface or Microsoft Teredo Tunneling Adapter. These names describe related Teredo surfaces; a missing entry does not prove that a manual installation is required.
- Restart Windows.
- After sign-in, open an elevated terminal and restore the default state:
netsh interface Teredo set state type=default
Verify the result:
netsh interface Teredo show state
If the state is operational and the Xbox app’s network test succeeds, stop here. The adapter may not appear exactly as it did before, depending on your Windows build.
If Code 10 remains
Make sure IP Helper is running
Teredo normally depends on the Windows IP Helper service (service name iphlpsvc). A PC-optimization utility, security baseline, or organization policy may have disabled it.
- Press Win + R, enter
services.msc, and press Enter. - Open IP Helper.
- Set Startup type to Automatic.
- If the service is stopped, select Start, then choose Apply and OK.
- Restart Windows and run the Teredo status command again.
You can inspect the service from an elevated terminal without changing it:
sc query iphlpsvc
sc qc iphlpsvc
On a managed work computer, do not force a service setting that is controlled by Group Policy or endpoint-management software; contact the administrator instead.
Temporarily test VPNs and security software
VPN clients, firewall modules, endpoint-security products, gaming optimizers, and network-tuning utilities can disable or block Teredo. Microsoft specifically documents VPN adapters and software that change Teredo-related settings; an ASUS GameFirst example is included in its troubleshooting material.
- Disconnect the VPN and completely exit its client, then test Teredo again.
- In Device Manager > View > Show hidden devices > Network adapters, look for a VPN adapter such as TAP-Windows Adapter V9.
- Do not uninstall a work VPN adapter merely as a test. Removing it may restore Teredo while breaking the VPN; use the VPN vendor’s supported disable or repair procedure.
- Review software installed or updated when the warning began, including antivirus firewalls, privacy tools, “gaming” optimizers, and OEM network utilities.
If Teredo works until the next reboot or until a particular utility starts, that program or a policy is probably reapplying the disabled setting.

Read the Teredo registry setting before changing anything
Use an elevated terminal to inspect the component’s configuration:
reg query HKLMSystemCurrentControlSetServicesiphlpsvcTeredo
If the output shows Type REG_DWORD 0x4, Microsoft’s guidance identifies that value as Teredo being disabled. Try the supported reset rather than editing the value directly:
netsh interface Teredo set state type=default
Also inspect whether IPv6 components were disabled:
reg query HKLMSystemCurrentControlSetServicesTcpip6Parameters
A nonzero DisabledComponents value can disable IPv6 features, including Teredo. Microsoft’s older procedure gives 0x8e as an example and shows restoring the value to zero:

Treat this as an advanced, last-resort change. Create a restore point, export the relevant registry key, restart afterward, and obtain authorization before changing a work-managed computer. If software recreates the value, remove or reconfigure that software instead of repeatedly editing the registry. Older reports about 0xff are anecdotal and are not a universal fix.
Restore the Teredo server name when resolution fails
If netsh interface Teredo show state reports an invalid server or failed to resolve server name, restore the default server setting:
netsh interface Teredo set state servername=default
Microsoft’s Windows 10-era troubleshooting page identifies win10.ipv6.microsoft.com as the default server name for that scenario. Treat that value as Windows 10 guidance rather than a timeless requirement for every edition or future build.
Check the hosts file for an intentional block
An entry in the hosts file can prevent the Teredo server from resolving. Open it as administrator:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsBest Value
notepad.exe C:WindowsSystem32driversetchosts
Search for win10.ipv6.microsoft.com. Remove only a deliberately added blocking entry, save the file, and run:
netsh interface Teredo show state
Leave unrelated hosts-file entries untouched.
Check the router and test another network
Some home routers block Teredo, particularly when the router detects an IPv6 connection on its WAN interface. Update the router firmware and review its IPv6, Teredo, UDP, gaming, NAT, and firewall documentation. Do not disable IPv6 globally as a reflex.
Temporarily test the PC on a phone hotspot or another network. If Teredo works there but not on the home connection, the router, ISP path, NAT behavior, or network firewall is more likely than the Windows adapter. Microsoft recommends consulting the router manufacturer for model-specific settings.

| Observation | Most useful interpretation |
|---|---|
| Web access works, but Xbox party chat fails | A Teredo/Xbox networking problem is more likely than a failed physical network card. |
show state says disabled |
Use type=default, then inspect IP Helper, registry policy, and software conflicts. |
show state says failed to resolve server name |
Check the server-name setting and hosts file. |
| The problem appears only with a VPN installed | Test the VPN client or adapter; removal can affect VPN operation. |
| The problem occurs only on one home network | Investigate router, IPv6, NAT, and firewall behavior. |
| The adapter is absent from Device Manager | Re-enable Teredo and verify its state before considering any manual installation. |
| The warning returns after every restart | A startup utility, VPN, security product, Group Policy, or enterprise tool may be reapplying it. |
Code 10 on this virtual component does not, by itself, prove that the physical Wi-Fi/Ethernet adapter is defective, that its driver is outdated, or that Windows must be reinstalled. It also does not justify a third-party driver updater.

What to avoid
- Random driver-download tools: Teredo is built into Windows; configuration and service state are the usual issues.
- Manual legacy-hardware installation as a first step: Microsoft warns that manually adding the old pseudo-interface can interfere with Teredo functionality.
- Global IPv6 disabling: It can create other connectivity problems and does not address the underlying cause.
- Unplanned VPN-adapter removal: It may restore Teredo but break required VPN access.
- Registry edits on managed PCs: Policy may intentionally control these values.
When to stop troubleshooting
Stop when ordinary networking works, no Teredo-dependent application is affected, and the warning is only an unused or cosmetic Device Manager entry. Continue to escalation only when Xbox or another required application still fails after the reset, service, software, and network checks, or when multiple network adapters show errors. On a managed computer, involve the administrator before changing services, registry values, VPN components, or router policy.
