No display type is best for every room: reflections, brightness, game-specific behavior, size and budget all matter.
What matters most in a TV for PS5 horror games?
Horror games often place important visual information in dim scenes. Judge a TV on two related but distinct qualities: how dark and uniform its blacks appear, and whether it keeps subtle details visible in shadows. Deep blacks alone do not ensure that a dark scene remains readable; near-black detail can be difficult to see if it is crushed.

Independent, model-specific dark-room reviews can help compare black uniformity and shadow visibility. Treat those results as evidence about the tested model and conditions, not a guarantee that every TV using the same display technology will perform identically.
OLED is worth comparing, not an automatic winner
OLED is one category to consider for dark-room gaming. RTINGS’ Samsung S90H review discusses its dark-room performance and PS5 compatibility, including 4K at 120Hz and VRR. It is a useful example to investigate, not a universal recommendation: room brightness, reflections, size, local model version, budget and the specific model’s shadow handling can change what suits you.
#1 Best Overall
- QHD Resolution (2560 x 1440) has 1.7 times the pixel density of Full HD for incredibly detailed pinsharp images
- HDR10 provides brighter highlights and nuanced shadow for added depth - making every scene feel more vivid and realistic
- The 180Hz refresh rate minimizes lag for gameplay with ultra-smooth action. Plus, the 1ms response time helps capture your moves in real-time, allowing you to react fast for gaming precision
- AMD FreeSync reduces choppiness, screen lag and image tearing, ensuring that your fast-paced, complex in-game action is stable with minimal stutter
- Ergonomic stand allows for tilt, pivot and height adjustments to maximize gaming comfort
Account for the room and other uses
A dark room makes black-level and shadow performance especially relevant. In a bright room, glare and reflections may weigh more heavily. Also consider seating distance and screen size, and whether the TV will also be used for films, sports or a gaming PC. Those uses can change which trade-offs matter most.
Which PS5 display features are worth paying attention to?
| Feature | What it does for PS5 | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| 4K at 120Hz | Sony says the PS5 supports 4K 120Hz video output. This can suit games and modes that output at that rate, but it does not mean every game renders at 120 frames per second. | The TV, selected HDMI input and connection must support the mode. Check the specific model and port. |
| VRR | On compatible screens and supported content, variable refresh rate can adjust refresh timing in real time. | Support and behavior depend on the TV and game; Sony cautions that results vary. |
| ALLM or automatic low-latency mode | Can switch a compatible TV automatically into a lower-latency mode when gaming. | Confirm support in the TV’s manual. An HDMI 2.1 label alone does not guarantee ALLM. |
| HDR | Can display supported HDR games with a wider range of brightness and color. | The screen and game must support HDR. Follow the game’s and TV’s calibration guidance rather than raising brightness indiscriminately. |
| More than 120Hz advertised refresh rate | May be relevant to other connected sources. | It does not raise the PS5’s documented 4K output ceiling above 120Hz. |
Sony’s PS5 resolution guide says the console supports HDMI 2.1 and 4K 120Hz output. It also notes that the TV and connection must support the selected mode. Use the PS5’s Video Output screen to check connected-device capabilities rather than relying only on a retailer’s feature list.

Set HDR for the content, not by guesswork
On PS5, Sony distinguishes “On When Supported” from forcing HDR conversion for non-HDR content. For games that support HDR, use the console’s HDR adjustment flow and follow the game and TV’s calibration instructions. A brighter image is not automatically a more accurate or more readable one.

- Near-black detail and uniformity: Look for model-specific dark-room assessment, not just a claim of deep blacks.
- HDR highlights and tone mapping: Check how the model handles bright effects against dark scenes and follow calibration guidance.
- Glare and reflections: Give these more weight if the room is bright or has light sources opposite the screen.
- Input lag and game mode: Check independent testing and the manufacturer’s specifications for the exact model.
- 4K 120Hz and VRR: Confirm both features on the size and regional version you plan to buy.
- HDMI ports: Check how many inputs support the desired features and where they are located, especially if a sound system or other devices will also be connected.
- Size and viewing distance: Choose a screen that suits your seating position and room.
- Current price and availability: Compare local listings for the exact size and regional suffix; model names and availability can vary by market.
RTINGS maintains a PS5 TV guide alongside its individual reviews. Use a guide to identify candidates, then check the review for the exact size and version where available. Ratings and findings are model-specific; they do not replace checking the local product and its connections.
How do you set up a PS5 for 4K 120Hz, VRR and HDR?
- Connect the PS5 directly to a TV HDMI input that supports the feature you want. If you use an audio receiver or switch, verify that it passes the required signal; connecting directly can help isolate a setup problem.
- Use the cable supplied with the console or an appropriate Ultra High-Speed HDMI cable.
- Update the TV firmware if an update is available, and consult the manual to identify which HDMI port supports the desired features.
- On PS5, open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output. Check the connected HDMI device details, including resolution, VRR and HDR capabilities.
- Choose output settings supported by both the TV and the connected port. For HDR, use the PS5 adjustment flow and select “On When Supported” if you want HDR enabled for compatible content without forcing conversion on non-HDR content.
- Check the TV’s manual for VRR and ALLM behavior, then confirm settings in the TV’s game or HDMI menus as needed.
What if 4K 120Hz does not appear?
Work through the connection before assuming the TV or console lacks the capability. Sony’s troubleshooting guidance points to the HDMI 2.1-capable port, cable, TV firmware and PS5 output settings.

- Move the console to the TV’s HDMI port specified for 4K 120Hz or HDMI 2.1 features; not every port on a TV necessarily supports the same modes.
- Check the TV manual for any input setting that must be enabled for the port to accept the full signal.
- Use the supplied console cable or an appropriate Ultra High-Speed HDMI cable, and bypass an intermediate receiver or switch while testing.
- Update the TV firmware, then restart the console and TV.
- Return to Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output and inspect the connected-device capabilities and selected output settings.
- If the mode remains unavailable, verify the exact TV model and port specifications with its manual. A general HDMI 2.1 label does not establish support for every feature, including ALLM.
