Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →For the best picture your setup can deliver, start at Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output on the PS5 Pro. Check the console’s reported output, set resolution to Automatic, use HDR On When Supported and run Adjust HDR, then enable 120 Hz, VRR and ALLM only when your TV, selected HDMI input and game support them. The TV and port—not a console toggle alone—set the ceiling for available features.
Start by checking what the PS5 Pro can output
Open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output. Review Current Video Output Signal and the connected HDMI device information before changing settings. This shows what the console detects from the TV connection. Sony says the PS5 supports the HDMI 2.1 specification and 4K 120 Hz video output, but the TV, port, cable and game still need to support the desired mode. See PlayStation Support’s resolution guide.

Choose resolution
Set Resolution to Automatic to use the highest resolution the connected display reports. If you need to set 4K explicitly, choose 2160p and verify the resulting signal in Current Video Output Signal. Resolution and refresh rate are separate: a 4K-capable TV does not necessarily accept 120 Hz at 4K.

Use a port that supports the feature you want, and enable the TV maker’s gaming or enhanced HDMI format if the set requires it. Support can vary by port and TV settings. The HDMI 2.1 label by itself does not guarantee VRR or ALLM; check the TV’s manual or specifications for the exact model and input. PlayStation’s PS5 Pro TV and monitor feature guide also notes that display and port support matter.

Enable 120 Hz without expecting every game to run at 120 FPS
Turn on 120 Hz Output when the TV and selected input support it. This allows compatible displays and games to use 120 Hz output; it does not force every game to render at 120 frames per second. A game must offer a suitable mode, and 4K/120 Hz also depends on the display, input and cable.

When a game offers graphics or performance modes, the choice is game-specific. In general, quality modes prioritize detail, while performance modes aim for smoother play—often in the 60–120 FPS range—with possible reductions in visual detail. Check the game’s own options rather than assuming one console setting controls every title. The PlayStation Blog’s feature overview discusses the 120 Hz and VRR requirements.

Use VRR and ALLM when supported
Variable Refresh Rate (VRR)
Enable VRR if both the TV and the game support it. Its effect varies by TV. The optional Apply to Unsupported Games setting may help stabilize frame rate in some cases, but Sony advises turning it off if a game behaves unexpectedly.
Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM)
Enable ALLM where the TV supports it to let the display switch automatically to a low-latency mode. HDMI 2.1 branding alone does not establish ALLM support. Sony also notes that when VRR output is active, the TV may switch to low-latency behavior even if the ALLM toggle says Off; fully disabling that behavior requires VRR to be off as well. Details are in Sony’s resolution and video-output guidance.

Keep Video Transfer Rate on Automatic
Leave Video Transfer Rate set to Automatic unless you are troubleshooting flicker. Sony’s -1 and -2 options limit supported output formats, including 4K/120 Hz. If lowering the rate stops flicker, check whether the resulting signal still provides the resolution and refresh rate you want; return to Automatic if the limitation is not worth the trade-off.

Allow 8K Output
Enable Allow 8K Output only with an 8K/60 Hz display that supports DSC (Display Stream Compression). VRR is disabled while the console is outputting in 8K, so 8K is a specialized choice rather than a baseline setting for PS5 Pro graphics. Sony documents these conditions in its video-output guide.
Troubleshoot missing 4K/120 Hz or a blank signal
If the desired mode is unavailable—or the screen goes blank—work through the connection from console to TV:
- Confirm that the exact TV model and selected HDMI input support 4K/120 Hz. Install the TV’s current firmware.
- Connect the PS5 Pro directly to the TV to rule out an intermediate receiver, switch or capture device.
- Use the HDMI cable supplied with the console or an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable rated for 4K/120 Hz.
- Enable the TV’s required gaming or enhanced HDMI input setting, if applicable.
- Set the console’s resolution to Automatic or 2160p, then check Current Video Output Signal.
- Keep Video Transfer Rate on Automatic while diagnosing. Try -1 or -2 only if flicker persists, and check whether the reduced output format is acceptable.
These steps follow PlayStation Support’s 4K/120 Hz troubleshooting checklist. If the output still fails, test a supported TV input and remove intermediate equipment before changing other image settings.
If you are choosing a TV, compare its exact inputs
For PS5 Pro gaming, verify support on the specific TV model and port for 4K at 120 Hz, HDR, VRR and ALLM, including any enhanced-format setting required to activate them. Do not infer VRR or ALLM support from HDMI 2.1 branding alone. For an 8K setup, also confirm 8K at 60 Hz and DSC, and weigh the loss of VRR in 8K output. These checks are more useful than relying on a universal picture preset or a brand-level claim.
