The best game to play after XCOM depends on which part you want to keep: Mutant Year Zero: Road to Eden adds stealth and scouting before fights; Phoenix Point offers an involved alien-war campaign; and Jagged Alliance 3 trades the invasion story for mercenary operations. For a more focused alternative, try Gears Tactics, Invisible, Inc. or Tactical Breach Wizards. These games share tactical decision-making with XCOM, but they are not interchangeable copies.
Which XCOM-style game should you play next?
Use this quick guide to match the game to the part of XCOM you miss most:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Scouting, stealth and ambushes: Mutant Year Zero: Road to Eden.
- An alien threat and a substantial strategic layer: Phoenix Point.
- Mercenary management and a more open campaign: Jagged Alliance 3.
- Cover-based squad fights with less between-mission management: Gears Tactics.
- Stealth missions with rising alarm pressure: Invisible, Inc.
- Shorter, puzzle-like tactical encounters: Tactical Breach Wizards.
The key distinction is whether you want the campaign layer as much as the battles. Phoenix Point and Jagged Alliance 3 describe broad strategic systems; Gears Tactics is a better fit if you want to spend more attention on the fights themselves. Mutant Year Zero and Invisible, Inc. both emphasize stealth, but in different ways: one uses scouting to set up combat, while the other centers on infiltration.

Best alternatives to XCOM, by play style
Mutant Year Zero: Road to Eden — for stealth before the fight
Mutant Year Zero is the closest fit if your favorite XCOM moments begin before combat. Its official site describes XCOM-inspired turn-based battles alongside exploration and real-time stealth. You can scout, approach enemies, and arrange an ambush before the encounter becomes a conventional tactical fight.
#1 Best Overall
- Tactical role-playing game with crossover mecha franchises
- Extensive unit customization and upgrades
- Story-driven missions with anime-style battles
- Large list of iconic robots and pilots
- Turn-based grid battle for strategy fans
That changes the mission rhythm: scouting and positioning are central, rather than simply choosing actions once combat starts. The setting and exploration loop also differ from XCOM’s base-and-mission structure. The official site lists versions for PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch.
Phoenix Point — for an alien war with a broader strategic layer
Choose Phoenix Point if you want to manage a campaign against an adapting alien threat as well as direct a squad in combat. Its Steam description lists base building, resource management, global diplomacy and economy management. It also describes enemies that adapt and a free-aiming system that lets players control soldier aim directly.

- STRATEGY GAME: Experience an intense two-player struggle for supremacy in the ancient world! Challenge your opponent and bring your civilization to victory with Prestigious Buildings, Military Supremacy or Scientific Supremacy.
- TAKE CONTROL OF YOUR CIVILIZATION: Decide to invest in science, military or prestige. If you fail to build defenses, your capital city may be destroyed, but ignore technology and your people may be left in the dark ages. Will your city achieve greatness, or will your opponent prevent you from completing all your Wonders?
- VICTORY CAN BE ACHIEVE IN THREE WAYS: By invading your opponent’s capital, by achieving a monopoly on scientific advancement, or simply by crafting the city that will earn the most victory points in the end. But be warned: only seven of the eight Wonders in play can be built.
- FAST & FUN GAME FOR TWO PLAYERS: Average 30 minutes of gameplay for 2 players. The perfect gift to add to game night with kids aged 10 and up!
- REPLAY FOR NEW FUN GAMEPLAY: 7 Wonders offers quick gameplays which keep players engaged regardless of player count. Looking for new adventures? Try our other Expansions New Editions (Note: All our Expansions - Cities, Leaders and Armada - require the 7 Wonders Base Game to play).
Those systems make it a more involved choice than a straightforward sequence of tactical missions. A Wargamer guide updated September 27, 2024, characterizes Phoenix Point as potentially fiddly and a less easy recommendation than some other XCOM alternatives. It also supports Steam Workshop, according to its Steam listing.
Jagged Alliance 3 — for mercenaries and campaign decisions
Jagged Alliance 3 is the pick for a squad-led campaign that is about mercenary operations rather than an alien invasion. Its official site describes action-point-based turn combat, recruiting and developing mercenaries, controlling territory, training militia and directing multiple squads. Decisions also affect the fictional country where the campaign takes place.

That makes its campaign management a major part of the appeal, not just a pause between battles. PC Gamer also describes destructible combat environments, adding another tactical consideration to fights. The official site lists online co-op.
Gears Tactics — for battles with less campaign downtime
Gears Tactics suits players who mainly want squad combat built around familiar ideas such as cover and overwatch. A Wargamer guide updated September 27, 2024, points to those similarities and notes that the game cuts down much of the between-battle management and decision-making found in XCOM.
Rank #4
- Offers new, streamlined form of gameplay
- Multiple paths of victory offer unique strategy opportunity
- Expansive game engages both new and experienced players
That trade-off is useful if you want to get from one fight to the next without spending as much time on the campaign layer. It is less suitable if managing a base, roster and wider strategic situation is a core part of what you enjoy about XCOM.

Invisible, Inc. turns the tactical problem into infiltration. GamesRadar+’s alternatives guide, updated February 18, 2025, describes turn-based missions shaped by objectives, escalating alarm status and the risk of losing operatives. Instead of preparing for a conventional battlefield engagement, you are trying to navigate a stealth operation as pressure rises.

Consider it when you want careful movement and mission tension more than a broad war campaign. The operative-loss stakes give individual decisions weight, but the game’s focus is infiltration rather than the combined battlefield-and-strategy structure associated with XCOM.
Tactical Breach Wizards — for compact tactical puzzles
Tactical Breach Wizards is the most focused option here if you want authored encounters rather than a sprawling strategic campaign. PC Gamer describes discrete, room-based combat scenarios whose challenge is combining characters’ abilities to solve tactical problems.
It is a good fit for players who like working through a fight as a puzzle, but it is not the closest choice if you want persistent campaign management between missions.

How these games differ from XCOM
These recommendations overlap with XCOM in tactical decision-making, but each shifts the emphasis. Compare them by the question you want the game to answer:
| What matters most | Best fit | How it changes the XCOM formula |
|---|---|---|
| Pre-fight scouting | Mutant Year Zero: Road to Eden | Combines real-time stealth and exploration with turn-based combat. |
| Campaign strategy | Phoenix Point | Adds base and resource management, diplomacy, economy and direct aiming against an adaptive enemy. |
| Roster and territory decisions | Jagged Alliance 3 | Centers mercenary recruitment, multiple squads, territory and militia in a fictional-country campaign. |
| More time in combat | Gears Tactics | Retains familiar cover and overwatch tactics while reducing between-battle management. |
| Infiltration | Invisible, Inc. | Builds mission tension around stealth, objectives, alarms and operative risk. |
| Ability combinations | Tactical Breach Wizards | Presents discrete room encounters as tactical puzzles rather than a broad strategic campaign. |
For a campaign that feels closest to XCOM’s combination of tactical and strategic decisions, start with Phoenix Point or Jagged Alliance 3, while keeping in mind that their settings and systems are different. For the battle-planning side without as much campaign management, look at Gears Tactics. For a change in mission approach, Mutant Year Zero and Invisible, Inc. offer distinct stealth-focused alternatives.
