| Tool | Operating model | Best fit | Main strength | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| LinuxGSM | Linux service and shell workflow | Linux VPS or home server administrators who script and maintain services | Separates Factorio start parameters from game configuration and supports version-branch selection | Requires comfort with Linux administration and terminal-based workflows |
| Open Factorio Server Manager | Browser-based management application | Operators who want visual lifecycle, save, and mod administration | Starts and stops the binary and provides upload, download, deletion, and installation controls for saves and mods | Still needs a correctly installed Factorio host and sensible storage and access controls |
| factoriotools/factorio | Docker container | Administrators already using Docker or Compose | Persistent volume, restart policy, environment-driven configuration, optional RCON, and containerized updates | Docker storage, networking, image replacement, and backup procedures become part of the job |
| Official Factorio command line | Native headless process | Minimal installations, custom automation, and compatibility checks | Authoritative flags such as --start-server and --rcon-port |
Provides primitives rather than a complete web dashboard or service manager |
For a single Linux machine, LinuxGSM is usually the cleanest service-oriented choice. For a nontechnical group that needs to upload a save or install a mod from a browser, Open Factorio Server Manager is the most approachable. Docker is the practical answer when your existing deployment standard is Compose, persistent volumes, and declarative environment variables.

Use the official headless model as the compatibility baseline
A manager does not change Factorio’s multiplayer compatibility rules. The official multiplayer documentation requires every game instance to have exactly the same game version and mods. That includes the server, every player’s client, and any second server instance used for testing or migration.
A dedicated server can be launched with the official headless flag --start-server, pointing it at a save. A generic invocation looks like this:
factorio --start-server <save-file>
The filename and installation path depend on how Factorio is installed; keep the placeholder inside your own command rather than copying it literally. Third-party managers ultimately arrange this same headless process, add lifecycle controls, or provide a different way to supply its configuration.
- Record the exact Factorio version before an upgrade.
- Record the enabled mod set and each mod version.
- Have a known-good save backup before changing either.
- Test that the server starts and that a client with matching versions can join.
When a manager behaves unexpectedly, launch and configuration details from the official command-line reference are the authority. This is particularly important when a dashboard or container hides the underlying command.
LinuxGSM: the Linux service and shell choice
When LinuxGSM is the right fit
Choose LinuxGSM when the server lives on a Linux VPS or home machine and you already think in terms of system services, shell scripts, scheduled maintenance, and log files. It gives you a repeatable operational wrapper around the Factorio process without requiring a browser application or container runtime.
The Factorio-specific documentation separates game-server configuration from start parameters. That distinction is useful: settings that belong to the game can remain independent from the arguments used to launch the process. It also documents the game port, RCON settings, and a branch setting for selecting a particular Factorio version line.
Keep configuration responsibilities separate
Use the game configuration area for Factorio’s world and server behavior, and use the start-parameter area for process-level arguments. Mixing the two makes later troubleshooting harder because you cannot tell whether a failure came from the save, the game configuration, or the launch command.

- Keep RCON port and password values in protected configuration rather than in public notes or chat.
- Document the game port separately from RCON so firewall rules remain understandable.
- Keep a copy of the LinuxGSM configuration when migrating to another host.
Version changes and backups
LinuxGSM’s documentation explicitly advises administrators to back up the server. Treat that as a prerequisite, not an optional maintenance task. Before changing the Factorio branch or updating a large mod set, stop the service cleanly, copy the saves and configuration to storage outside the live installation, and record the version you are leaving.
After the change, start the service and inspect its logs before inviting players back. If the process fails, restore the previous configuration and save rather than repeatedly changing several variables at once. A controlled rollback is faster than trying to infer which of a version, mod, and configuration change caused the failure.
Public listing credentials
LinuxGSM notes that Factorio credentials may be needed when the server is intended for public listing. Treat those credentials as secrets. Do not put them in a world-readable shell history, a public repository, or an unprotected support ticket. If public listing is not part of your plan, do not add credentials merely because the field exists.
LinuxGSM limitations
LinuxGSM is a service and administration layer, not a full save-and-mod web console. It suits an operator who is comfortable finding files, editing configuration, reading logs, and scheduling backups. If several people need to manage saves without shell access, pair the host with a browser-oriented manager or choose Open Factorio Server Manager instead.

Open Factorio Server Manager: browser control for saves and mods
What it manages
Open Factorio Server Manager describes itself as a tool that runs on a Factorio server and manages the server, saves, mods, and other features. Its documented lifecycle controls include starting and stopping the Factorio binary. Its content controls include uploading, downloading, and deleting saves, plus managing installed mods.
That combination makes it the clearest choice when the recurring work is operational rather than infrastructure-focused: select a save, stop the server for maintenance, upload a replacement world, or administer mods without opening an SSH session for every task.
Installation choices
The installation documentation covers both Docker and native installation, and it can point at an existing Factorio installation. That gives you two migration paths:

- New installation: deploy the manager alongside a fresh Factorio installation and establish its storage layout before importing a world.
- Existing installation: point the manager at the current Factorio files, then verify that it can see the saves and installed mods before changing anything.
For an existing server, begin with a filesystem backup. Confirm which directory contains the live saves, which directory contains mods, and which account owns those files. A manager that cannot read or write the intended directories will appear to have missing content even when the files are present.
A safe browser workflow
- Open the manager on a private administrative network or behind authentication; do not expose an unprotected control panel to the public internet.
- Check that the displayed Factorio installation is the one serving your production port.
- Stop the server before replacing or deleting a save.
- Download a copy of the current save before uploading a new one.
- Upload or select the intended save and verify its filename and timestamp.
- Manage mods as a deliberate set, then start the server and watch its output for loading errors.
- Join with a client whose Factorio version and mod versions match the server exactly.
Where the browser model helps—and where it does not
A dashboard reduces routine shell work, but it does not remove the need for storage planning, backups, version records, or network security. The manager can expose save and mod operations to anyone who has administrative access, so protect the interface and limit accounts to the people who need them.
It also does not override Factorio’s compatibility rule. A mod uploaded through a browser still has to match the server’s Factorio version and the clients’ enabled mod set. Keep an export or filesystem copy of the working set before experimenting.
factoriotools/factorio: Docker and Compose operations
Why use the container image
The factoriotools/factorio image is aimed at operators who already use Docker or Compose. The documented quick start mounts a persistent host location into /opt/factorio in the container, maps the game’s UDP port, and can apply Docker’s unless-stopped restart policy. Container logs are available with docker logs.
A representative shape of the documented run command is:
docker run -d
--name factorio
--restart=unless-stopped
-p 34197:34197/udp
-v /path/on/host:/opt/factorio
factoriotools/factorio
The example uses the documented game-port default of 34197/udp. Replace the host path with a directory you back up. The exact image tag and additional options should come from the image’s current documentation and your deployment files.
Persistent storage is the foundation
The /opt/factorio mount is what keeps saves, configuration, and other server data when a container is recreated. Without persistent storage, replacing the container can remove the state you meant to preserve. Verify the mount before starting a production world, and test that a newly created save appears on the host filesystem.
The project recommends backing up saves before replacing a container or upgrading. Stop the container cleanly, copy the persistent data, record the image version, then perform the replacement. If the new image fails to load the save or mods, restore the previous image and data rather than deleting the backup.
Environment-driven configuration
The image documents environment variables for selecting a save, controlling configuration, updating mods, and ignoring selected mod updates. In particular, UPDATE_MODS_ON_START controls whether mods are updated when the container starts, while UPDATE_IGNORE lets you exclude specified updates.
Recommended Free Tools
Automatic mod updates are convenient for a test server but risky for a long-running production world. A mod update can change behavior or make clients incompatible. For production, record the enabled versions and update them during a planned maintenance window. If you enable updates on startup, make sure the backup happens before any restart that can change the mod set.
Logs, restart policy, and failure diagnosis
--restart=unless-stopped brings the container back after a host or Docker daemon restart unless you intentionally stopped it. That improves availability, but it can also restart a misconfigured server repeatedly. When a start fails, inspect the output with:
docker logs factorio
Check the mounted directory, file ownership, selected save, image tag, and environment variables before changing the world or deleting the container. A restart policy is not a backup strategy and does not guarantee that a corrupt save or incompatible mod will recover.
RCON in a container
The image supports optional RCON for scripting and documents 27015/tcp as the example RCON port. Publish that port only when your network design requires it. Prefer access from a private administration network, use a strong password, and avoid exposing RCON directly to the public internet.
Official command line and RCON for automation
The official command-line reference remains useful even when LinuxGSM, a browser manager, or Docker starts the process for you. It documents headless operation, the --start-server flag, the --rcon-port option, and the service credentials used when a headless server downloads mods.

RCON lets an automation script send commands to a running server. The Docker project describes using RCON for scripting, while the official reference defines the command-line option used to configure the port. Keep the responsibilities clear:
- Lifecycle: the service manager, browser manager, or container starts and stops the process.
- In-game administration: RCON sends commands after the process is running.
- Content deployment: filesystem or manager operations install saves and mods.
- Compatibility: the official Factorio version and mod rules determine whether clients can connect.
Do not confuse an open RCON socket with a secure management plane. Protect the password, restrict the listening interface where possible, and place firewall rules in front of any published RCON port.

A safe operating procedure for saves, mods, and upgrades
1. Establish a source of truth
Create a short record containing the Factorio version, selected save, enabled mods and versions, game port, RCON status, and the manager or image version. Store it with your deployment configuration, not only in a personal note. This record makes a second instance or rollback reproducible.
2. Put live data on persistent storage
For a native installation, identify the directories that hold saves, mods, and configuration. For Docker, verify the host mount for /opt/factorio. For a browser manager, verify the paths it is configured to administer. Confirm permissions by creating or uploading a harmless test save before production use.
3. Back up before every risky change
Copy the current save and configuration before changing the Factorio version, replacing a container, or changing a large mod set. Keep at least one backup outside the live directory. Give the backup a timestamp and version label so you can select the correct rollback quickly.
4. Change one class of variable at a time
Do not upgrade the game, replace the image, and update every mod in one untracked operation. Change the game version first, or the mod set first, and test. If the server fails, the smaller change surface makes diagnosis possible.
5. Validate before inviting players
- Start the service, manager, container, or headless process.
- Read logs for save-load, mod, port, and permission errors.
- Connect with a client that has the exact same game version and mod set.
- Exercise the world briefly and confirm that the expected save is being written.
- Only then announce the server as ready.
6. Keep a rollback path
Retain the previous image tag or Factorio installation, the previous configuration, and the pre-change save. If the new setup starts but behaves incorrectly, stop it, restore the previous components, and verify the old save before attempting another upgrade.

Running a public world and a test world is possible with all three management approaches, but isolation must be explicit. Give each instance its own save and configuration storage, game port, and process or container identity. If RCON is enabled, assign a separate port and password as well.
- LinuxGSM: use separate service configurations and data directories.
- Open Factorio Server Manager: point each manager or installation at the intended files and restrict access to the correct instance.
- Docker: use separate containers, persistent volumes, host ports, and environment values.
- Direct CLI: run separate processes with distinct saves, configuration files, and network ports.
Never test a mod update against the only copy of a production save. Clone the save into the test instance, record the test versions, and promote the change only after a successful client connection.
Troubleshooting by symptom
Clients report a version or mod mismatch
Compare the client and server Factorio versions first, then compare the complete enabled mod list and versions. A manager’s upload or an image’s automatic update may have changed the server while clients still hold the old set. Restore the recorded set or update every client deliberately; do not keep restarting and hope the mismatch clears.
The server starts without the expected save
Check the selected save setting, the path supplied to --start-server, and the persistent mount. In Docker, confirm that the host directory is actually mounted at /opt/factorio. In a browser manager, verify that the application points to the existing Factorio installation rather than an empty default directory.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsA container disappears or loses data after replacement
Inspect the container definition and confirm the persistent volume before recreating it. A container’s writable layer is not a substitute for a host backup. Restore the backed-up save and configuration, then recreate the container with the correct mount and image version.
RCON automation cannot connect
Verify that RCON is enabled, that the configured port matches the automation client, and that the firewall permits access only from the intended administration network. For the documented Docker example, the RCON port is 27015/tcp; it is optional, not a requirement for a basic server. Check the password and inspect logs without publishing the port broadly.
The process repeatedly restarts
A restart policy can mask the original error. Temporarily stop the automatic restart behavior or stop the container, read docker logs factorio, and correct the underlying save, permission, image, or mod problem. Apply the restart policy again only after a clean manual start.
Which tool should you choose?
Choose LinuxGSM if…
- Your host is Linux and you prefer shell commands, service scripts, and scheduled maintenance.
- You need documented branch selection and a clear separation between start parameters and game configuration.
- You are comfortable owning backups, file permissions, logs, and firewall rules.
Choose Open Factorio Server Manager if…
- You want to start and stop the binary from a browser.
- You regularly upload, download, or delete saves.
- You want browser-based installed-mod administration and can protect the management interface.
Choose factoriotools/factorio if…
- Docker or Compose is already your standard deployment system.
- You want persistent volumes, a restart policy, container logs, and environment-driven settings.
- You understand that replacing an image requires a save backup and that automatic mod updates need change control.
Use the official command line directly if…
- You need the smallest possible headless setup.
- You are building your own automation or integrating a custom process supervisor.
- You want to verify exactly which flags, ports, credentials, and files a higher-level manager is using.
Final recommendation
Start with the operating model you can maintain reliably. LinuxGSM is the strongest general Linux-service option, Open Factorio Server Manager is the most useful browser-first option for save and mod administration, and factoriotools/factorio is the natural choice for a Docker-based stack. Keep persistent storage, version records, tested backups, and matching client/server versions regardless of the tool. Those practices matter more to a stable Factorio world than the dashboard or wrapper you place around the headless server.
