For a one-off capture, use Firefox Developer Tools; for repeatable documentation, use Playwright or Puppeteer in a script. A full-page screenshot captures the rendered page beyond the visible browser window, but the right method depends on whether you need a quick manual image, repeatable automation, or a particular output format or capture region. What a full-page screenshot captures
“Full page” means the page’s scrollable content, not just what is currently visible in the browser viewport. Playwright describes its full-page capture as if the page were displayed on a very tall screen. The result is an image of the rendered page at capture time; it is not a copy of the page’s source, interactive behavior, or future state.

Before choosing a tool, decide whether you need the whole scrollable page or only one element. Also consider whether the deliverable is a static image or whether your documentation process needs a PDF, archived page, scheduled capture, hosted sharing, or team workflow. The tools below document screenshot capabilities; those capabilities alone do not establish a complete archival or publishing workflow.

Playwright’s API documentation includes examples using Chromium, Firefox, and WebKit; that does not establish identical behavior for every browser version, configuration, or page. Whichever route you choose, try it on the actual page you document, especially if it uses lazy-loaded images, sticky elements, dynamic content, or authentication.
Capture manually with Firefox Developer Tools
Firefox documents two routes: enable the full-page screenshot control in the toolbox, or run the screenshot command in the Web Console. The toolbar route saves the resulting capture to Downloads.

Enable the toolbar control
- Open Firefox Developer Tools.
- Open the toolbox settings and enable Take a screenshot of the entire page under the available toolbox buttons.
- Use the newly available screenshot button to capture the page. The toolbar workflow saves the image to Downloads.
Use the Web Console
Open the Web Console for the page and run:

Use a delay when a menu or hover state needs time to appear before capture; use an element selector when the documentation needs one component rather than the entire page. Consult Firefox’s current command help for exact option syntax, since the command’s options and browser interface may change.
Automate captures with Playwright
Playwright’s page screenshot API accepts fullPage: true for the whole scrollable page. Here is a minimal example after you have a Playwright page open on the target URL:

Capture an element or control visible content
Playwright also supports element screenshots, so a documentation image can focus on a component rather than the full page:

A mask can cover selected content, and a stylesheet can alter page presentation during capture. These controls can reduce accidental exposure in an image, but they are not a security guarantee: inspect the saved output before sharing it.

Automate captures with Puppeteer
Puppeteer uses Page.screenshot(); set fullPage to capture beyond the current viewport and provide a path for the output file:

- Whole page or element: Capture the full scrollable page for page-level documentation, or select an element when the relevant evidence is a single component.
- Wait behavior: Pages with lazy images or dynamic content may not be ready when the initial navigation completes. Wait for a relevant selector or state, and inspect the saved image for missing content.
- Viewport and scale: Keep viewport dimensions and device-pixel ratio consistent when captures need to be compared over time. Firefox documents a DPR option; Playwright provides format and scale controls.
- Transient UI: If a menu or hover state is part of the documentation, trigger that state deliberately; Firefox’s console delay can allow a state to appear before capture.
- Sensitive content: Use masking or capture styling where appropriate, then review the final image. Neither option substitutes for access controls or careful handling of private information.
- Output needs: Select image format and quality based on the destination. If readers need clickable interaction, page source, or a durable archive, a screenshot by itself is not that deliverable.
Troubleshooting common capture problems
The screenshot stops at the visible viewport
Check that the full-page option is enabled: use --fullpage in Firefox’s console command or fullPage: true in the Playwright or Puppeteer screenshot options. A screenshot without that setting may cover only the current viewport.
Images or content are missing near the bottom
The page may load content lazily as it is scrolled, or fetch it asynchronously. Wait for the relevant content or state before capturing, and test the target page rather than assuming that navigation completion means every asset is ready.

A sticky header, popup, or menu obscures content
Decide whether the overlay belongs in the documentation. Trigger menus intentionally when they are the subject; otherwise use an appropriate capture-time style or hide/clean-up option supported by your chosen workflow, then review the resulting image for unintended changes.
The capture differs between runs
Dynamic page data, animations, changing viewport dimensions, and different load timing can alter a rendered image. Standardize the capture conditions you control and wait for a meaningful page state. A screenshot records the page as rendered at that moment, so changing site content can still produce legitimate differences.
The result is too large or hard to share
A long page becomes a tall image and may not suit a document layout. Consider capturing a relevant element or region, choosing an appropriate format and quality, or producing a PDF if that is the required deliverable. Do not treat a single image as a replacement for an archived, searchable, interactive page.
Practical choice
Use Firefox for a quick manual capture, Playwright when screenshots belong in a script or repeatable test workflow, and Puppeteer when its API fits the browser automation stack already used by your project.
