Best Student Laptops for 2026: Picks by Budget and Course Needs

A defensible ten-model price ranking isn’t supported by comparable prices. See the student laptop options with documented configurations and learn how to compare them fairly.

There isn’t enough comparable pricing to rank ten student laptops fairly in 2026. The available recommendations mix UK prices, US prices and student-only education pricing, as well as different configurations. Instead, this guide lays out the supported options by budget context and use case, and explains what to check before buying.

Why this isn’t a ten-laptop price ranking

A useful price ranking needs prices from one country, checked at the same time, for clearly identified configurations. The available sources don’t establish ten such prices: Save the Student lists UK prices, while RTINGS discusses US prices and an Apple education price, and their model configurations don’t all match. Treat the prices below as source-specific reference points, not a direct comparison or guaranteed current offers. Confirm the precise model, configuration, eligibility and local price before buying.

MacBook Neo: budget macOS option

RTINGS recommends the 2026 Apple MacBook Neo for student work such as papers, browsing, spreadsheets and presentations. Its under-$600 guide says eligible students can get it for $599 through Apple education pricing. That is a US education price, not a general retail price. The cited configuration has 8GB of non-upgradeable memory, so check whether it suits your course software and expected multitasking. RTINGS’ under-$600 laptop guide provides its recommendation and pricing context.

HP OmniBook 3 14: inexpensive Windows configuration

RTINGS names the HP OmniBook 3 14 its best cheap student laptop. Its tested 14-hy0017nr configuration includes a Ryzen 5 40 processor, 8GB of soldered memory and a 256GB SSD. RTINGS notes a dim display and memory limits, and cautions that HP sells materially different configurations under the OmniBook 3 name. Verify the exact SKU rather than relying on the family name. See RTINGS’ budget student laptop guide.

HP 14" HD Chromebook Laptop for Students, Intel Quad-Core N4120(> N4020), 4GB RAM, 64GB eMMC, WiFi, Webcam, HDMI, USB-A&C, 14 Hours Battery Life, Zoom, Chrome OS, CUE Accessories
  • Intel Celeron N4120: 4 Cores & Threads, 1.1GHz Base Clock, Up to 2.6GHz Boost Clock, 4MB Cache, Intel UHD Graphics 600. The perfect combination of performance, power consumption, and value helps your device handle multitasking smoothly and reliably with four processing cores to divide up the work.

Acer Chromebook Plus Spin 714: convertible ChromeOS choice

RTINGS’ under-$600 guide selects the Acer Chromebook Plus Spin 714 as its Chromebook pick. The described base configuration has 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage, and its convertible design can suit students who want a touchscreen. The guide gives a $700 MSRP and says it is often discounted; that does not establish that it currently costs less than $600. Most Windows and macOS applications do not run natively on ChromeOS, so first confirm that your required course work is available in a browser or Android app.

Lenovo Chromebook Duet 5: detachable for light work

RTINGS describes the Lenovo Chromebook Duet 5 as a detachable ChromeOS tablet suited to younger students doing simple homework and media use. It supports USB-C charging, but it is a 2021 model and the cited recommendation is for light needs, not demanding general-purpose work. Check current availability and software compatibility before considering it.

ASUS TUF Gaming A16: gaming and graphics workloads

Save the Student lists a UK ASUS TUF Gaming A16 with a 16-inch display, 16GB RAM, a 1TB SSD and GeForce RTX 4050 at £949 as its gaming pick. Dedicated graphics may be appropriate for particular games or course applications, but they add cost and can make portability a more important trade-off. Check the software requirements for your course before paying for graphics performance you may not need.

Choose for your course, not the laptop label

Which? says many students mainly use word-processing, presentation, spreadsheet, email and browsing tools; an all-rounder can handle those tasks without an ultra-high-spec configuration. Resource-intensive media, design or engineering applications may need a more powerful system. Consult your department’s software and hardware requirements before settling on a model. Which?’s student laptop guide discusses these different workloads.

  • Specialized software: Check the required operating system, processor, memory and graphics specifications against the app vendor’s or course department’s requirements.
  • Multitasking: Compare RAM in the exact configuration. RTINGS notes that 8GB on a Windows laptop can be more limiting for multitasking than 8GB on the MacBook Neo running macOS; that observation is not a general guarantee that one 8GB machine will suit every workload.
  • Portability: Think about the size and weight you are willing to carry and whether a convertible or detachable form factor is useful for your classes.

How to make a fair price comparison

  1. Set the market and date. Choose your country and currency, record when you checked prices, and state whether student discounts are included.
  2. Match configurations. Record the full model or SKU, processor, RAM, storage and operating system. A low headline price may refer to a different configuration from the one a review describes.
  3. Check eligibility and availability. Confirm whether an education price requires student status and whether the exact configuration is in stock where you plan to buy it.
  4. Sort only comparable prices. Rank the verified prices from low to high, then describe what each option is best suited to. A lower price alone does not make a laptop right for every course.
  5. Weigh the total fit. Compare price alongside software compatibility, memory and storage, portability and the performance your assignments require.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
