For a quality-first gameplay recording in Streamlabs Desktop, match your canvas to your display, choose the highest output resolution your PC can sustain, and record action-heavy games at 60 FPS. In Settings > Output > Recording, use MP4 for most recordings, select NVENC if you have an NVIDIA GPU or x264 if you want CPU encoding, and start with CQP at CQ 17 for NVENC or CRF for x264. These are starting points, not settings guaranteed to work on every computer; make a representative test recording and adjust if performance suffers.
Recommended Streamlabs recording settings
| Setting | Starting point | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Base (Canvas) Resolution | Match your monitor resolution for gameplay. | The canvas is your working layout; it does not by itself set the resolution of the saved video. |
| Output (Scaled) Resolution | Use the highest resolution your computer can sustain. | If recording struggles, lower the output resolution and test again. |
| Downscale Filter | Lanczos when scaling down. | Streamlabs recommends it for image quality and notes that it uses slightly more CPU. |
| FPS | 60 FPS for action-heavy content; consider 30 FPS for static scenes. | Higher frame rates require the computer to keep up; they are not automatically better if recording becomes choppy. |
| Recording format | MP4 for most recordings. | For separate audio tracks, use MP4 or MKV. FLV does not support multiple audio tracks. |
| Encoder | NVENC with an NVIDIA graphics card; otherwise consider x264. | NVENC uses the GPU for encoding; x264 uses the CPU. Actual performance depends on the hardware and workload. |
| Rate control | CQP for NVENC; CRF for x264. | These are recording recommendations, not live-stream bitrate settings. |
| CQ level | Start at 17 with CQP. | Lower values mean less quantization and higher quality; higher values mean more compression and lower quality. File size varies with the footage. |
| Keyframe interval | 0. | Streamlabs’ recording guide recommends leaving this at 0. Do not automatically apply live-stream keyframe advice to recording. |
| Preset and profile | Max Quality if performance permits; High profile. | If the computer struggles, lower the preset. Streamlabs advises leaving other settings at their defaults. |
These recommendations follow Streamlabs’ recording settings guide, last updated October 2, 2025. Streamlabs calls the highest sustainable output resolution its quality-first choice; the right setting still depends on your computer and recording workload.

Set up a recording step by step
- Set video dimensions and frame rate. Open Settings > Video. Match Base (Canvas) Resolution to your display, then choose the desired Output (Scaled) Resolution. Choose Lanczos if you are scaling down. Set 60 FPS for motion-heavy gameplay or 30 FPS for static scenes.
- Choose where files are saved and a format. Open Settings > Output > Recording, set the recording path, and select MP4 for ordinary use. If you need isolated audio tracks for editing, select MP4 or MKV instead of FLV. Streamlabs documents the format limitation in its recording functionality guide.
- Select an encoder and rate control. Choose NVENC if your system has an NVIDIA graphics card, or x264 for CPU encoding. For NVENC, use CQP and start at CQ 17; for x264, use CRF. Keep keyframe interval at 0.
- Set quality options conservatively. Select Max Quality only if the computer remains responsive during recording, and set the profile to High. If performance degrades, lower the preset or output resolution rather than assuming one setting suits every system.
- Separate audio only when you need it. Open Advanced Audio Settings and assign the microphone and desktop audio to separate tracks for post-production. Set the output track count to include the tracks you assign. Streamlabs describes support for up to six tracks; select MP4 or MKV because FLV does not support multiple audio tracks.
- Record and review a real test. Capture a short segment representative of the game or scene you intend to record. Check smoothness, image detail, audio, and whether the saved file plays correctly. If the system struggles, lower output resolution or preset quality and test again.
Why there is no universal 1080p/60 FPS preset
A resolution and frame rate are useful only if the computer can render the scene and encode it without unacceptable stutter. Streamlabs recommends 60 FPS for recording in general, especially action, while 30 FPS can suit board games or static images. That guidance is not a hardware benchmark or a guarantee that a particular combination will run well on your PC.
- Keep the canvas matched to the display when building a gameplay scene; choose output resolution separately.
- If the recording is choppy or the computer is overloaded, reduce the output resolution first, then retest. Lower the preset quality if needed.
- Use Lanczos when downscaling for Streamlabs’ recommended image-quality trade-off, while accounting for its slightly higher CPU use.
- Judge CQ 17 by the result and file size of your own footage. Lower CQ generally improves quality at the cost of larger files; higher CQ compresses more.
Recording and streaming at the same time
The recording recommendations above are for recording-only use. Streamlabs cautions that simultaneous streaming and recording can require different settings. Do not replace recording CQP or CRF with a live-stream bitrate value: its getting-started guide discusses CBR and platform-oriented bitrate configurations for streaming, which are a different workflow.

If recording fails while you are also live, Streamlabs’ recording troubleshooting guide suggests trying a recording encoder different from the streaming encoder, or choosing “Same as Stream” quality. These are troubleshooting options, not a universal best-setting rule.
Fix common recording problems
Recording is choppy or the PC struggles
- Lower Output (Scaled) Resolution in Settings > Video, then make another test recording.
- Reduce the recording preset quality if Max Quality is too demanding.
- Check whether the issue appears only when streaming and recording at once; if so, try the conditional encoder or “Same as Stream” options above.
No file appears or Streamlabs cannot write to the destination
- Check that the chosen recording path is writable by your user account and that the drive has free space.
- Streamlabs lists updating GPU drivers and running the application as administrator among possible troubleshooting steps. Its guide also mentions installing the Microsoft Visual C++ 2017 redistributable for some errors. These steps may help in specific cases, but are not guaranteed fixes.
The saved file has no separate microphone or desktop track
- Confirm that the sources are assigned to the intended tracks in Advanced Audio Settings and that the output track count includes them.
- Use MP4 or MKV for multi-track recording; FLV does not support multiple audio tracks.
