How to Start an Internet Radio Station on YouTube

You can start an internet radio station on YouTube by meeting the channel’s live-streaming requirements, preparing a rights-cleared audio program and visual feed, and sending it through an encoder using a YouTube stream key. Test the full broadcast before going public, and plan each stream’s length: YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived, but does not establish that a continuous 24/7 broadcast will be saved as one complete replay.

1. Check that your channel can go live

YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. Its current help page also sets a minimum age of 16. Enable live streaming in YouTube Studio before you need to broadcast: first-time activation may take up to 24 hours. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance and encoder setup instructions.

An active live stream receiving a copyright strike is among the reasons YouTube may restrict live-stream access. Check your channel’s status before building a schedule around it; see YouTube’s guidance on avoiding live-stream restrictions.

2. Choose a radio format and production setup

YouTube broadcasts video, so an audio-first station still needs a video feed. An encoder can pair your audio program with appropriate visuals and send the combined stream to YouTube. The platform supports encoder workflows using software or standalone hardware; it does not require one particular encoder or prescribe radio-specific artwork.

  • [Mute and Monitor] The front mute and monitor buttons but not at the back, make it easier to get the audio interface use. Ability to mute audio, the audio mixer for streaming prevents background noise from damaging your live broadcast. The sturdy-built control button allow you to operate freely and easily during live streaming.

Even a streaming equipment accessory will not be dull looking when video production.
Format What the setup involves What to plan for
Music-only or automated programming Prepare the audio playlist and a suitable visual feed, then send them through an encoder. Confirm streaming and archive rights for every included track. A microphone is not established as necessary for this format.
Presenter-led show Combine the host’s voice, any music or other audio, and visuals in the encoder. A microphone is an optional practical purchase for a live host, not a YouTube prerequisite. YouTube lists microphones among typical professional streaming hardware.

YouTube describes using external audio and video hardware as one encoder option. Choose based on how you will produce the show and how reliably you can test and monitor it; its guidance does not provide a price or performance ranking of encoder products. Read YouTube’s encoder instructions.

3. Clear the rights before you broadcast

Setting up a YouTube stream does not grant permission to broadcast music. YouTube’s Livestream Terms and Conditions make the provider responsible for having rights to live content and for meeting applicable requirements in the territory of the stream. YouTube states: “You represent and warrant that you have all necessary rights for the exploitation of the Live Content on the Google Services throughout the world, including, without limitation, music licensing rights from artists, record labels, publishers (including public performance licenses) and any other royalty participants.”

Behringer XENYX 802S Premium Analog 8-Input Mixer with USB Streaming Interface
  • Analog mixing and equalization for pure sound
  • Direct mixing of PC/gaming sounds into the streaming output
  • Ultra-low noise analog mixer for streaming, podcasting and recording
  • Stereo USB audio interface to connect your computer or mobile device

That is a platform-wide contractual requirement, not a country-specific licensing guide. What permission you need depends on your territory and the program catalog, so verify the applicable licensing, registration, or notification requirements before transmitting. Owning a recording or being able to play a song on another service does not, by itself, establish that you have YouTube streaming rights. Also decide whether you have rights for an archived replay, not only the live transmission.

4. Create the stream and connect your encoder

  1. Open YouTube Studio and create or schedule a live stream. Set its title, description, visibility, and other details for the broadcast you intend to run.
  2. Copy the stream URL and stream key from the stream setup. In your encoder, enter the YouTube server URL and key in the corresponding stream destination fields. YouTube uses the key to accept the encoder’s feed, so treat it like a credential: do not publish it or share it with people who should not be able to send video to your channel.
  3. Configure the audio and video feed. Confirm that the encoder is sending the intended program and visuals. YouTube’s cited instructions explain the connection workflow but do not specify radio-only bitrate, resolution, or keyframe settings; use settings supported by your encoder and follow its current guidance rather than relying on invented universal values.
  4. Start the encoder and check the Live Control Room preview before going public. Confirm the incoming picture and sound, then verify that the watch page is accessible to the intended audience. Test on a phone as well as the device used to configure the stream.

For the exact current workflow, see Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.

Audio-Technica AT-UMX3 USB Desktop Audio Mixer
  • Compact, feature-rich livestreaming USB audio mixer provides high-quality sound for desktop audio production
  • Plug-and-play connectivity to computer or mobile device (no special drivers required)
  • Loopback function makes it easy to mix mic and instrument inputs with background music, game sounds, or other audio input from a computer – and send the stereo mix back to the computer for streaming
  • High-performance A/D converter with resolution up to 24-bit/192 kHz provides crystal-clear output for voice and instruments
  • Equipped with a single mic input (XLR or ¼"), two LINE inputs for guitar and keyboard, and USB-C input for connecting to a computer

5. Test bandwidth, playback, and monitoring

  • Leave upload headroom. YouTube recommends 20% upload-bandwidth headroom and advises that total stream bitrate not exceed the available upload bandwidth. The recommendation is from YouTube Help’s streaming tips; the page does not state a publication year. See YouTube’s streaming tips.
  • Run an unlisted test. Check the Live Control Room preview, confirm the watch page loads, and listen for silence, distortion, dropouts, or an audio/video mismatch.
  • Check the intended listening experience. Test playback on mobile and confirm that the video feed and audio remain usable there.
  • Monitor while live. Keep an eye on the encoder and Live Control Room for interruptions or problems instead of assuming a successful start means the whole broadcast is healthy.

6. Decide how long each broadcast should run

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. If you want a replay, schedule and operate broadcasts with that limit in mind. The cited encoder guidance does not establish that a continuous 24/7 stream will be preserved as one complete replay, so do not promise listeners a single full-length archive for an always-on station. See YouTube’s encoder and archive guidance.

7. Understand live revenue limits

Depending on channel eligibility, YouTube may offer ads, Super Chat, Super Stickers, and channel memberships for live streams. Ad delivery is not guaranteed in every slot, so do not forecast income on the assumption that every listener will see an ad. YouTube also says ads are turned off for an externally embedded player with autoplay. Check the current conditions in YouTube’s live-stream monetization guidance.
