When OBS Studio is the better fit
You want control over a custom production
OBS Studio is built around scenes assembled from different sources. You can place windows, images, text, browser content, a webcam, or a capture card into a scene, then switch between scenes with transitions. That flexibility suits creators who want to design their own layout and control how sources appear.

You need audio shaping tools
OBS includes an audio mixer, per-source filters such as noise gate and noise suppression, and support for VST plugins. These controls can help when you want to shape separate audio sources rather than rely on a packaged layout.

The OBS Project describes OBS Studio as free and open source, with versions for Windows, macOS, and Linux. Its feature set is extensive, but you may need to configure scenes and sources yourself rather than start with an integrated set of alerts and widgets.

Check both minimum and recommended computer guidance
Streamlabs’ support page, last updated April 8, 2026, lists Windows 11 or macOS 12 and higher and 8 GB RAM as minimum requirements. Its May 20, 2026 quick-start guide recommends Windows 11 or macOS 13 or higher, 16 GB RAM or more, a recent i5 or Ryzen 5 processor, and newer discrete graphics. These are vendor guidelines: the workload and other programs running on your computer affect suitable settings.

How to choose for your setup
- List the production elements you need. If you want to build scenes from multiple sources and shape audio with filters or VST plugins, OBS documents those controls. If integrated alerts, widgets, and overlays matter most, Streamlabs is the option whose official product description emphasizes them.
- Decide whether multistreaming is essential. Streamlabs lists multistreaming as an Ultra feature. Do not assume a feature is included in every plan; check the current product terms.
- Compare your computer with the vendor guidance. Treat minimum specifications as compatibility guidance, not proof that a particular resolution, frame rate, or collection of effects will perform well. OBS explicitly says a compatible system does not guarantee successful streaming or recording.
- Try the workflow before building around it. Create a basic scene or layout, add the sources you actually plan to use, and confirm that your intended audio and video workflow is practical on your machine.
What about other streaming apps?
Other products exist, but the available first-party detail is not sufficient for a fair feature-by-feature ranking against OBS Studio and Streamlabs Desktop. Elgato’s comparison coverage mentions Meld Studio and vMix as alternatives, but without equivalent current product details here, it would be misleading to rank them or compare their prices.
