Recommended Free Tools
For most Mac-based YouTube creators, OBS Studio is the strongest free, flexible starting point. Choose Streamlabs Desktop if you want built-in creator widgets and guided setup, Ecamm Live for Mac-focused interviews and show production, or Restream Studio if you prefer streaming from a browser. The best fit depends on your show, Mac and macOS version, audio needs, and how much setup you want to manage.
Which Mac streaming software fits your YouTube workflow?
| Software | Best suited to | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| OBS Studio | Creators who want a flexible desktop encoder and are comfortable configuring scenes and sources. | Free and open source, with video and audio mixing, scene transitions, per-source audio filters and VST plugin support. Separate Intel and Apple Silicon downloads are available. OBS feature information |
| Streamlabs Desktop | Creators who want onboarding, overlays, alerts and other built-in creator widgets. | Offers a free setup and paid Ultra features. On macOS, capturing desktop audio requires audio-routing software; microphone input does not capture system sound by itself. Streamlabs Mac setup guide |
| Ecamm Live | Mac creators producing interviews or shows that need scene controls, local recording or multiple destinations. | Mac-only production software with interviews, screen sharing, green screen and recording features. Some capabilities depend on whether the Mac uses Apple Silicon or Intel. Ecamm Live |
| Restream Studio | Creators who want a browser-based streaming workflow instead of a desktop encoder. | Restream describes Studio as streaming from a browser to multiple channels. Verify current browser compatibility and plan limits for your setup. Restream’s software guide |
OBS Studio: flexible, free and configurable
OBS Studio lets you combine video and audio from different sources, switch between scenes with transitions, apply audio filters to individual sources and use VST plugins. Its flexibility is useful when you want to build a layout around your own camera, screen, graphics and audio inputs, but expect to configure those sources rather than rely on a built-in creator-widget workflow. OBS is described by its project as free and open source. See OBS features and downloads.

Check the exact macOS and OBS version
Compatibility details depend on the release and the documentation page. OBS’s macOS compatibility table dated July 29, 2026 lists OBS Studio 32.2.1 for Apple Silicon and Intel Macs on macOS 13 through macOS 26; it lists older compatible releases for macOS 12 and earlier and labels those systems no longer supported. The OBS homepage lists version 32.2.2, dated August 14, as the latest release and says macOS 13 or newer. Check the current download and compatibility information for your Mac before installing rather than assuming one minimum applies to every release. OBS macOS compatibility table · OBS Project.
OBS’s system-requirements page lists Intel or Apple Silicon and macOS 11 (Big Sur) or later as basic macOS requirements, but explicitly warns: “Having a compatible system does not guarantee that it is capable of streaming or recording using OBS Studio.” Encoding demands vary with encoder, resolution, frame rate and scene complexity. A Mac that can launch the app may still struggle with a demanding production. OBS system requirements.

Streamlabs Desktop: guided setup and creator widgets
Streamlabs Desktop is available for macOS 12 and newer and supports broadcasting to YouTube. Its product material highlights scenes, overlays, alerts and widgets; some features are part of the paid Ultra plan. The free setup guide describes one destination per video-layout orientation, while paid-tier features differ, so confirm the current feature boundary if you need more than one destination. Plan for audio routing on Mac
Streamlabs’ Mac setup guide gives 8 GB RAM as a minimum and recommends 16 GB or more; it gives macOS 12 as a minimum and macOS 13 or newer as recommended. For desktop or game audio, the guide says to install audio-routing software such as BlackHole and add it as a Mic/Aux source. This is separate from choosing your microphone: a microphone source captures your voice, not automatically the sound playing on the Mac. Streamlabs Mac setup guide.

It gives at least 2 Mbps upload as a requirement and 6 Mbps for 1080p HD. These are Ecamm’s figures, not a guarantee of stream quality or a universal YouTube rule. The same page says Apple Silicon is required for isolated video recording and Dual Mode, and Intel Macs have a lower guest limit in Interview mode. Ecamm system requirements.
Ecamm’s product page offers a 14-day trial; check its site for current pricing and plan details before deciding. A Stream Deck is optional, not a prerequisite: Ecamm documents it as a way to trigger actions such as scene changes and sound effects. Ecamm Live.

Restream Studio: a browser-based alternative
Restream’s software guide describes Studio as a way to stream from a browser to multiple channels. That workflow may suit a creator who would rather not run a desktop encoder, but the cited guide does not establish a detailed current Mac compatibility matrix, performance comparison or complete plan limitations. Check the current browser and plan requirements for your intended setup before relying on it. Restream software guide, February 6, 2026.
How to choose for your Mac setup
- Choose by workflow: OBS, Streamlabs and Ecamm are desktop applications; Restream Studio is browser-based.
- Choose by setup style: OBS gives you control over sources and scenes; Streamlabs emphasizes guided setup and built-in creator widgets; Ecamm is oriented toward Mac show production.
- Match features to the show: a straightforward camera-and-screen stream may not need interview controls, isolated recording or multiple destinations. Check whether those production tools matter before choosing a more feature-rich workflow.
- Verify your Mac: check the exact macOS release, Intel or Apple Silicon architecture, and any feature-specific restrictions in current vendor documentation.
- Account for audio: on Streamlabs for Mac, desktop audio capture requires routing software; do not assume selecting a microphone will capture system sound.
- Consider workload and budget: OBS is free and open source; Streamlabs has a free tier and paid Ultra features; Ecamm offers paid plans and a trial. Confirm current prices and feature boundaries on vendor sites. Resolution, frame rate, encoder, sources and scene complexity affect system demands; no benchmark comparison is established here.
