The familiar red, white, and yellow cable is composite AV: yellow carries video, while red and white carry right- and left-channel audio. It can connect directly to a TV with matching composite inputs. If your TV has no RCA sockets, check whether its manual specifies a model-compatible 3.5 mm AV lead; if not, an active composite-to-HDMI converter can bridge the old source to an HDMI input. The right choice depends on the ports and signal direction—not the cable’s age.
What the red, white, and yellow cable does
This three-plug arrangement is commonly called a composite AV cable or RCA composite cable. The yellow plug carries composite video; red carries right-channel audio; white—or sometimes black—carries left-channel audio. Match each plug to the corresponding input or output color. TCL describes the usual color arrangement.

Composite is an analog standard-definition connection. An adapter can change the connection format, but it cannot recover detail that was not present in the original signal or turn VCR or DVD playback into native 4K. TCL and LG both caution against expecting that kind of image upgrade.

Check the TV’s inputs before buying an adapter
Look at the back and sides of the TV, and confirm the port labels in the manual for its exact model. TVs differ: some have three RCA composite inputs, some accept composite through a small 3.5 mm jack with a specific breakout lead, and many provide no composite input. Manufacturer manuals are the reliable way to identify the supported connection and cable.

- Three matching RCA sockets: Connect the source’s yellow, red, and white plugs to the TV’s corresponding composite inputs.
- A jack labeled VIDEO IN or AV: Check the TV manual for the exact RCA breakout lead and wiring standard. A generic 3.5 mm cable may not work.
- HDMI ports but no composite input: Use an active composite-to-HDMI converter, then connect it to the TV with an HDMI cable.
For example, a cited Philips manual specifies an OMTP 3.5 mm connection on certain models and warns that a CTIA cable may not work. Sony likewise directs owners to check the manual for the applicable conversion cable and video input. These are model-specific examples, not universal wiring rules: Sony’s instructions.
Choose the connection that matches both devices

Connect an RCA source to an HDMI-only TV
- Check the source and TV ports. Confirm that the older device has composite RCA outputs and the TV has an HDMI input but no usable composite input.
- Choose the correct converter direction. The product must take composite AV in and send HDMI out. A device labeled HDMI-to-RCA does the opposite. Element Electronics explains the direction check.
- Connect the RCA plugs to the converter’s composite input. Match yellow to video, red to right audio, and white to left audio.
- Connect the converter’s HDMI output to an HDMI input on the TV. Use an HDMI cable if one is not included.
- Power the converter if required. Follow its instructions; some models use a separate USB power connection. VANCO’s converter documentation shows a composite input, HDMI output, and USB power.
- Select the matching HDMI input on the TV. Start playback on the source device.
Converters can differ in their power arrangements and setup, so follow the instructions for the model you choose. TCL also describes connecting composite sources to newer TVs with a converter: TCL’s connection guide.

If there is no picture or sound
- Nothing appears: Check that the TV is set to the input used by the source or converter—AV for a direct composite connection, or the relevant HDMI input for a converter setup.
- The converter setup stays blank: Verify that the RCA plugs go into the converter’s composite input and its HDMI output goes to the TV. Confirm that the converter is powered if its instructions require it.
- A 3.5 mm breakout lead does not work: Check the TV’s model-specific manual for the correct lead and wiring standard instead of assuming another 3.5 mm cable is compatible.
- Picture appears, but looks soft: That is consistent with a standard-definition composite source. The converter changes the connection format; it does not create the detail of an HD or 4K original.
