OBS Studio is a well-documented starting point for streaming 1440p or 4K video to YouTube. It gives you separate controls for your scene canvas and stream output, lets you choose a software or available hardware encoder, and supports the bitrate and frame-rate settings YouTube recommends. The best setup still depends on your encoder, computer, and upload connection: choosing a 4K output by itself does not make a stream reliable.
Which software should you use for high-resolution YouTube streaming?
For a creator who wants direct control over resolution, frame rate, bitrate, scenes, and encoder choice, OBS Studio is a practical option supported by detailed official documentation. That makes it a defensible starting recommendation—not a proven winner over every alternative. The available current evidence does not establish a like-for-like feature, price, performance, or reliability comparison with Streamlabs Desktop, vMix, Wirecast, or other applications.

Choose the workflow by checking four things together: YouTube ingest compatibility, the output controls in your software, the capabilities of your encoder, and whether your connection can sustain the stream. A capture card is only needed when your source is an external camera, console, or other device that must be captured; it is not a universal requirement for streaming software.

OBS separates the base (canvas) resolution, where you arrange and compose sources, from the output (scaled) resolution, which determines the emitted stream size. It also exposes frame-rate, video and audio bitrate, service/server, and stream-key controls. Scenes let you assemble sources for the broadcast. See the OBS Studio Overview Guide.

Software versus hardware encoding
OBS supports x264 software encoding and hardware encoding when compatible hardware is available. Hardware encoders can move encoding work away from the CPU to a dedicated GPU component, but they are not automatically better: OBS notes that earlier hardware encoder generations can produce lower quality than software encoding at the same bitrate using the default veryfast preset. Consider your specific encoder generation and test the actual output. The OBS hardware encoding guide describes the tradeoffs.
YouTube’s recommended bitrates for 1440p and 4K
YouTube’s live encoder guide, accessed October 3, 2026, gives different minimum and recommended bitrates by resolution, frame rate, and ingest codec. The values below are YouTube configuration recommendations, not a guarantee of visual quality or proof that your internet connection can sustain the stream.
| Output | Ingest codec | Minimum bitrate | Recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1440p, 30 fps | AV1 or H.265 | 5 Mbps | 15 Mbps |
| 1440p, 30 fps | H.264 | 7 Mbps | 21 Mbps |
| 1440p, 60 fps | AV1 or H.265 | 6 Mbps | 24 Mbps |
| 1440p, 60 fps | H.264 | 8 Mbps | 34 Mbps |
| 2160p (4K), 30 fps | AV1 or H.265 | 8 Mbps | 30 Mbps |
| 2160p (4K), 30 fps | H.264 | 11 Mbps | 42 Mbps |
| 2160p (4K), 60 fps | AV1 or H.265 | 10 Mbps | 35 Mbps |
| 2160p (4K), 60 fps | H.264 | 14 Mbps | 50 Mbps |
For example, YouTube recommends 35 Mbps for 2160p60 using AV1 or H.265 and 50 Mbps for 2160p60 using H.264. The same 2160p60 target therefore does not imply one universal bitrate; first confirm the codec your encoder and ingest path use. YouTube’s current recommendations and other ingest requirements are in Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

Configure OBS for 1440p or 4K
Use YouTube’s recommended settings as a starting point, then validate them with a representative stream. OBS’s documented controls include stream service/server and key, video and audio bitrate, base and output resolution, and frame rate. Names and available choices can vary with OBS version, operating system, and installed encoder hardware, so confirm the exact codec and options shown in your own setup.
- Set up the YouTube broadcast. In OBS, open Settings > Stream, select the YouTube service and configure the server and stream key provided by YouTube. Treat the key as a password: do not show it on screen or share it. Use RTMPS when available for encrypted transmission, as YouTube recommends.
- Choose the canvas and output. Open Settings > Video. Set the base (canvas) resolution to fit the composition and sources you are arranging; set the output (scaled) resolution to 2560 × 1440 for 1440p or 3840 × 2160 for 2160p. Select 30 or 60 fps according to the content, encoder capacity, and connection. Increasing output resolution alone does not ensure a stable stream.
- Choose an encoder and bitrate. In OBS’s output/streaming settings, select a compatible encoder and set the video bitrate to YouTube’s recommendation for that codec, resolution, and frame rate. Use constant bitrate (CBR), which YouTube specifies for its encoder guidance. If the intended codec or rate is unavailable, do not assume another option is equivalent; check YouTube’s current requirements and your encoder’s capabilities.
- Set the keyframe interval. Configure a two-second keyframe interval; YouTube says not to exceed four seconds. Check the encoder’s control for this setting rather than assuming a preset uses the desired interval.
- Set audio and HDR appropriately. YouTube accepts AAC or MP3 audio. For HDR, YouTube recommends H.265 over RTMP(S) and says AV1 is not supported for HDR. If HDR is part of the workflow, verify the current ingest guidance and encoder support before going live.
- Run a representative preflight. Test with motion and audio similar to the real broadcast, not just a static desktop. OBS warns that “60-fps streaming can be very taxing on your system compared to 30-fps.” Check both encoding performance and YouTube’s stream health, and reduce frame rate, resolution, or bitrate if the system or connection cannot sustain the target.
Make the upload connection part of the decision
Run an upload speed test on the connection you will actually use for the broadcast, then leave headroom for normal variation and other network traffic. A speed-test result is not a guarantee of sustained performance. YouTube advises choosing quality based on the connection, testing ahead of the event, and monitoring stream health and messages during the broadcast.
For 2160p/4K, YouTube says the low-latency improvement option is unavailable; 4K streams use normal latency. If low latency is essential, weigh that limitation before selecting 4K. Accepted inbound resolutions and stream-health fields are also documented in Google’s LiveStreams | YouTube Live Streaming API.

Check the stream before the real event
- Confirm the stream key and YouTube destination in OBS, and keep the key private.
- Use the intended resolution, frame rate, encoder, codec, bitrate, and keyframe interval in the test.
- Include representative movement and audio so the test reflects the real workload.
- Watch YouTube stream health and messages during the test and broadcast; a configured bitrate is not evidence that packets are arriving reliably.
- If the stream is unstable, lower the load—starting with frame rate, resolution, or bitrate—and test again rather than relying on a single successful launch.
Troubleshooting high-resolution YouTube streams
YouTube reports a weak or unstable stream
The selected bitrate may exceed the connection’s sustained upload capacity, or the connection may vary under load. Repeat an upload test on the broadcast connection, reduce bitrate or output demands, and run another representative test. Monitor YouTube’s live health messages instead of judging only by the local OBS preview.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The computer struggles at 60 fps
Encoding and composing at 60 fps can tax the system more than 30 fps. Try 30 fps, simplify the scene, or use a compatible hardware encoder. Hardware encoding may reduce CPU work, but compare the actual result because older encoder generations can deliver lower quality at equal bitrate.
The desired bitrate or codec is unavailable
Encoder options depend on the software, operating system, and installed hardware. Check which codec OBS exposes and match the YouTube bitrate recommendation to that codec; do not select a bitrate from a different codec’s row in the table. If needed, use an available supported codec and consult YouTube’s live encoder guide for its applicable settings.

4K is stable but latency is higher than expected
This can be expected: YouTube says 4K streams use normal latency because the low-latency improvement option is unavailable at 2160p. Decide whether 4K detail or lower latency matters more for the broadcast.
