What’s actually slowing this PC down?

For most gamers who want control and a free, open-source tool, start with OBS Studio. Choose Streamlabs Desktop if you prefer a guided setup with channel linking, overlays, alerts, and widgets built into the desktop workflow. Neither is a universal performance winner: your operating system, scene complexity, encoder, resolution, frame rate, and PC headroom all matter.
OBS Studio or Streamlabs Desktop: which should you choose?
| Your priority | Good first choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Detailed control over scenes, sources, transitions, and audio | OBS Studio | OBS supports a broad mix of sources, configurable transitions, audio filters, and VST support. It is free, open source, and available for Windows, macOS, and Linux. OBS Project |
| Guided onboarding and a desktop workflow with overlays and alerts | Streamlabs Desktop | Its quick-start guide walks through channel linking, overlay selection, gameplay capture, audio setup, and going live. Streamlabs Desktop quick-start guide |
| Multistreaming | Check Streamlabs’ current plan and destination eligibility | Streamlabs’ July 2026 guide discusses integrated destinations and RTMP, subject to platform requirements and stream keys. Plan details can change. Streamlabs getting-started guide |
| Streaming console gameplay through a computer | Evaluate capture-card compatibility first | OBS lists capture cards as a source type. Compatibility depends on the console, card, connections, operating system, and target resolution. OBS Project |
This is a use-case comparison, not a benchmark. The official documentation reviewed does not establish that one application is always faster or produces better-looking streams. Actual results depend on your hardware, encoder, scene and source count, overlays, resolution, and frame rate.

What each program is built to do
OBS Studio: flexible production control
OBS builds a broadcast from scenes and sources. A scene can combine game or window capture, images, text, browser windows, webcams, and capture cards. You can configure transitions and apply audio filters to sources. That flexibility is useful when you want to shape a custom layout, but more sources and effects can add workload and make setup more involved. OBS Project

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →OBS is the clearer starting point if you want broad operating-system support or expect to build and refine your own scene layouts. Its flexibility does not guarantee that a particular PC can handle a demanding game and a complex scene at the same time.

Streamlabs Desktop: an assisted setup path
Streamlabs’ May 2026 quick-start guide describes a guided sequence: link a channel, choose overlays, capture gameplay, configure audio, and go live. It suggests 60 FPS as a starting point for fast-action games and 30 FPS for slower card games; these are examples, not universal rules. Your hardware, game, connection, and streaming destination may call for different settings. Streamlabs Desktop quick-start guide
Streamlabs says streaming through its tools is free, while its Twitch guide lists multistream and other capabilities among Ultra upgrades. Features and plan terms may change, so verify the current plan before relying on a specific feature or assuming it is included. Streamlabs’ Twitch guide

Check your PC and operating system before you commit
System requirements are starting guidance, not a promise of smooth gameplay and streaming. OBS notes that demands vary with encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity, and warns: “Having a compatible system does not guarantee that it is capable of streaming or recording using OBS Studio.” OBS system requirements
- Streamlabs memory guidance: its system-requirements page, last updated April 8, 2026, lists 8 GB RAM minimum and 16 GB or more recommended. These vendor figures do not guarantee acceptable performance for every game or scene. Streamlabs Desktop system requirements
- Streamlabs connection guidance: the same page gives 3.6 Mbps or better for 720p at 30 FPS on most platforms. Do not treat that as a universal target for other resolutions, frame rates, or services; check the destination’s current requirements. Streamlabs Desktop system requirements
- Processor and graphics examples: Streamlabs’ May 20, 2026 quick-start guide gives Intel Core i5 11th/12th generation or AMD Ryzen 5 5600X and higher, and Nvidia RTX 20/30 or AMD RX 5000/6000 series as recommended classes. They are examples, not a universal shopping list. Streamlabs Desktop quick-start guide
- Operating system: Streamlabs’ May 2026 setup guide gives Windows 11 or macOS 12 as minimum guidance, with newer versions recommended. Its system-requirements page may be updated separately; check that live page for the applicable requirement before installing. Set up a test stream before going public
- Install the app that matches your workflow. For OBS, use its official download and requirements information at obsproject.com. For Streamlabs, follow its quick-start guide and verify the current system requirements.
- Run the initial configuration. OBS recommends its Auto-Configuration Wizard to find settings suited to your hardware and chosen output. In Streamlabs, follow the guided channel-linking and setup flow. Treat the resulting settings as a starting point, not proof that the stream is ready.
- Build only the scene you need first. Add the game or window capture, then optional sources such as a microphone, webcam, images, or overlays. Add sources gradually so you can identify which addition causes a performance or audio issue.
- Connect the destination using its current stream setup instructions. Keep your stream key private; anyone who obtains it may be able to broadcast to your channel. Use the platform’s current instructions for locating or resetting it rather than sharing the key in chat, screenshots, or public posts.
- Make a short private or unlisted test, where the platform offers that option. Check that the game is captured, voice is audible and not clipping, audio and video stay in sync, and motion is smooth. Watch the destination’s stream health indicators before switching to a public broadcast.
- Adjust one variable at a time. If frames drop or gameplay becomes choppy, test a lower output resolution or frame rate, simplify the scene, or try a different encoder option supported by your hardware. Re-test before changing several settings at once.
There is no single bitrate, resolution, keyframe interval, or encoder setting that fits every PC and destination. The material cited here does not establish exact universal values. Follow the current streaming requirements of your destination and use the app’s configuration workflow as a baseline.

Peripherals are optional, but compatibility matters

Copyright and channel eligibility still apply
Streaming software does not grant rights to game footage, music, or other material you include. Use content you have the rights to broadcast, and check the streaming destination’s current rules for music, gameplay, and channel eligibility. A successful software setup is not a substitute for those checks.

The stream or game stutters
Streaming adds work on top of running the game. Reduce scene complexity, remove sources you are not using, or test a lower resolution or frame rate. OBS specifically cautions that performance depends on the encoder, output settings, and scene complexity; a listed compatible system is not a performance guarantee. OBS system requirements

The platform rejects the stream key or does not receive the broadcast
Recheck that you copied the key for the intended channel and that the channel is eligible to go live under the platform’s current rules. If the key may have been exposed, reset it through the platform rather than continuing to use it.
The connection cannot sustain the chosen output
Use Ethernet where practical, check the platform’s current upload guidance, and test under normal home-network conditions. Streamlabs’ 3.6 Mbps guidance applies to 720p at 30 FPS on most platforms only; it is not a universal requirement or guarantee. Streamlabs Desktop system requirements
For a gaming channel that should loop prerecorded video 24/7
OBS and Streamlabs Desktop are production tools for a live broadcast from your computer. If your separate goal is to keep uploaded gameplay, highlights, or other prerecorded video looping as a YouTube live stream, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It plays uploaded videos, not a live camera feed, and streams to YouTube only.
- The stream runs in the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on.
- Every slot streams the uploaded quality, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot with no re-encode or quality tiers.
- It automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
- The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. A slot includes one always-on stream, 10 GB storage per slot pooled across active slots, 24/7 looping and playlists, automatic recovery, and StreamNeo team support. The product is the same on every plan; only billing length changes.
- Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. UPI and cards are available in India; card checkout is available worldwide. For five or more slots, contact support.
For that specific prerecorded-video use case, start StreamNeo’s free first day.
