The best live-stream transcription tool depends on what you need viewers—or you—to do with the words. For captions in Twitch’s player, use a compatible caption source; for local processing inside OBS, consider LocalVocal; for a transcript you can search while a stream is live, consider LiveScript. These are workflow options, not an accuracy ranking: no independent, comparable benchmark establishes a winner.
Choose the kind of transcription you need
“Transcription” can mean several different things in a live-stream setup. Decide first whether the words should appear to viewers, be translated, or be searchable by you while the stream is running. The delivery method matters: text burned into the video is part of the picture, while a caption track or separate page gives viewers a different way to access it.

- Viewer-facing captions: Put spoken words on screen or in a platform caption feature. Check whether viewers can turn them on or change their appearance.
- Translated captions: Determine which languages the tool can recognize and translate, and how viewers select a language.
- Searchable live transcript: Capture words in text you can search or monitor. This is useful for finding a phrase, but it does not necessarily add captions to the outgoing stream.
- Local processing: Run speech recognition on your own computer rather than sending audio to a transcription cloud. This can reduce reliance on a transcription provider, but performance depends on the model and hardware.
There is no independent accuracy comparison across the options below. Test with your own microphone, accent, names and jargon, music, interruptions, and overlapping voices before relying on any tool.

How caption delivery works on Twitch, YouTube, and OBS
Twitch captions need a caption source
Twitch’s closed-caption guide describes captions supplied through caption files or broadcast encoders and recommends an OBS caption plugin as one way to provide real-time captions. Captions are not automatic for every channel. When captions are available, viewers can use the CC control and adjust display settings such as size, color, and placement. Check Twitch’s current guidance when configuring a stream.

OBS does not recognize speech by itself
OBS composes scenes and sends a stream; it is not itself a speech recognizer. To put recognized words into an OBS stream, add a caption plugin, a browser source, or a captured caption view. A text overlay added to the scene is baked into the video, so viewers cannot independently toggle it off. A separate caption page or feed may offer viewer choice, depending on how the provider and stream are configured.
These OBS workflow distinctions are described in a Subanana guide; the author says they run Subanana, so treat product descriptions there as vendor-authored. For platform-specific behavior, consult the platform’s documentation.
YouTube automatic live captions are not a universal translation solution
A Subanana guide dated July 31, 2026 says YouTube Live automatic captions are English-only and available in normal-latency mode. That is a secondary, vendor-authored description, not a guarantee for every channel, language, or current YouTube configuration. Do not assume that automatic captions translate speech for international viewers. Check YouTube’s current live-caption settings and test the language and delivery behavior on your own stream.

The options below serve different jobs; they are not ranked by recognition quality. Verify current features, compatibility, pricing, and privacy terms with each provider before choosing.
| Option | Best fit | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Twitch caption delivery through a plugin or encoder | A Twitch streamer who wants captions available through the player’s CC feature. | A compatible caption source is required; captions are not automatic for every channel. Confirm that the caption feed reaches Twitch and test the viewer controls. |
| LocalVocal OBS plugin | A streamer seeking local speech recognition, translation, and OBS integration. | Choose a build suitable for your operating system and hardware. Processing speed and results depend on the machine and model; no independent latency or accuracy benchmark is established here. |
| Hosted caption feed or OBS overlay | A streamer seeking managed captions, styling, or language options. | Find out whether text is burned into the video or delivered separately, how viewers choose languages, what audio is sent to the provider, and what the current plan limits and retention terms are. |
| LiveScript searchable transcript | A streamer or monitor who needs to search spoken words rather than necessarily add captions to the outgoing stream. | Its vendor says YouTube and Twitch streams can be transcribed by URL, and other browser audio can be handled through a Chrome extension. Confirm current eligibility, language support, plan limits, and privacy terms. |
| Amazon Transcribe streaming | A developer building a custom transcription or caption pipeline. | Integration, supported languages and regions, audio encoding, chunking, quotas, and session limits require engineering work. Follow AWS’s current service documentation. |
LocalVocal: local speech processing in OBS
The LocalVocal project repository describes an OBS plugin using Whisper and whisper.cpp to process speech locally. Project-listed features include real-time transcription, translation, on-screen captions, TXT and SRT output, timestamp synchronization with OBS recordings, partial transcription, and sending captions to RTMP streams such as Twitch or YouTube. The project lists CPU and GPU acceleration variants; consult its release notes and download guidance to select a build for your operating system and hardware. These are project claims, not independently verified performance results, and features can change.
Hosted captions: distinguish overlay from separate feed
A hosted service may supply text for an OBS browser source, a separate viewer page, or both. A scene overlay is visible in the composed video and cannot be toggled off by each viewer. A separate feed may let viewers choose among configured languages without altering the video. Ask the provider what audio it receives, how it handles retention and deletion, and which language and display options are included. Subanana’s guide describes its own browser-based caption and translation workflow, but those product statements are vendor claims rather than an independent comparison.
LiveScript: searchable text rather than necessarily a caption track
LiveScript’s product page describes real-time searchable transcripts for YouTube and Twitch streams, with a Chrome extension for other browser audio. Its FAQ states that words appear within 1–2 seconds in live mode, and the site lists a free tier with five minutes of live transcription per period and a Pro plan at $19.99 per month. These are volatile vendor claims, not independently measured latency or a guarantee for every setup; verify current price, limits, supported languages, and privacy terms on the provider’s site. A searchable transcript is not necessarily delivered to viewers as a native platform caption track.
Amazon Transcribe: engineering a custom pipeline
A custom pipeline gives developers control over how recognized text reaches an overlay, caption feed, or transcript store, but requires implementation. AWS’s streaming transcription guide lists FLAC, Ogg Opus, and signed 16-bit little-endian PCM as supported streaming audio formats; WAV should not be treated as PCM input. AWS recommends lossless audio and uniform chunks, and says 50–200 ms chunks are appropriate when the audio type permits setting chunk size. It identifies 16,000 Hz as a quality and data-volume compromise when possible. These are AWS-specific engineering recommendations, not universal settings for every transcription tool. AWS also cautions that faster streaming can have accuracy limitations; supported languages and regions, quotas, and session-duration constraints should be checked in its current documentation.
Compare tools on the factors that affect your stream
- Destination compatibility: Confirm support for the platform you stream to and the path by which captions reach it.
- Delivery format: Decide between a viewer-selectable caption track, text baked into the picture, a separate caption page, or a transcript for your own use.
- Language and translation: Check recognition and translation separately. A tool that transcribes a language may not translate it or provide viewer language controls.
- Delay and text revisions: Establish how partial and final text appear, and test whether the delay works for your stream. Vendor latency claims are not a cross-tool benchmark.
- Transcript utilities: If you need to find or reuse spoken content later, check for search, timestamps, and TXT or SRT export.
- Privacy: For cloud tools, check what audio is transmitted, retention, training use, access controls, processing region, and deletion terms in current privacy documentation. Comparable answers have not been established for these providers.
- Setup and hardware: Check operating-system compatibility, CPU or GPU requirements, OBS integration, and whether a browser extension or developer work is needed.
- Real-world audio: Test your actual microphone and mix, including music, names, jargon, accents, interruptions, and overlapping speakers. Do not infer accuracy from speed alone.
- Recording and VOD behavior: Verify whether captions are saved with the platform recording, an OBS recording, or neither. The behavior depends on the caption path and recording setup; test it before relying on an archive.
- Cost and limits: Compare current plan limits and regional availability. Prices and feature allowances can change.
Set up and test captions before going live
- Choose the outcome. Write down whether you need captions in the platform player, a visible OBS overlay, translated text, or a searchable transcript. This determines what kind of tool to install.
- Confirm the destination path. For Twitch, follow its current caption guidance and verify the plugin or encoder actually sends captions. For OBS overlays, add the caption source to the relevant scene. For a separate feed, confirm how viewers will access it.
- Check language and display choices. Set the recognition language and any translation options. If viewers need to select captions or languages, test those controls from a viewer’s perspective.
- Run a private or unlisted test where the platform permits. Speak normally, use stream-specific names and jargon, play the usual music and game audio, interrupt yourself, and include overlapping speech if that occurs in your real stream.
- Check delay and corrections. Watch for the time between speech and text, and whether partial captions change before they settle. A fast display does not prove the words are accurate.
- Check the recording separately. Record through your usual OBS or platform workflow, then confirm whether the captions appear in the saved video or transcript and whether timestamps are usable.
- Review privacy and access. Before sending live audio to a hosted tool, read its current privacy documentation for transmission, retention, training use, access, region, and deletion.
Common problems and what to check
No captions appear in the Twitch player
Check that a compatible caption source is configured and active, and that the encoder or plugin is sending captions to Twitch. Confirm the CC control is available on the viewer side. Twitch does not automatically caption every channel.
OBS shows captions, but viewers cannot turn them off
If text is part of an OBS scene overlay, it is embedded in the video image. Use a platform caption track or a separate feed if viewer-selectable captions are required, and test the route with the intended platform.

Captions are delayed or frequently wrong
Separate delay from recognition quality: streaming transcription can show text quickly without ensuring accuracy. Check the microphone level and audio mix, language selection, background music, overlapping voices, and the tool’s hardware or connection requirements. Test with your actual content rather than relying on a vendor latency figure.

Live display and recording output are separate behaviors. Check whether your caption source writes a transcript or subtitle file, whether OBS recording timestamps are supported, and how the platform stores captions for the specific stream. Make a test recording before depending on VOD captions.
A local plugin is slow or will not start
Check the project’s current release notes and download instructions for the correct operating system and CPU/GPU build. Local model performance depends on the selected build and machine; no universal hardware or latency result is established here.
A custom AWS stream rejects audio or ends unexpectedly
Check that audio uses a supported streaming format and encoding, that chunks are uniform, and that sample-rate and language settings match the AWS documentation. Review applicable quotas and session-duration limits for the account, region, and implementation.
Do transcription tools make a stream copyright-safe?
No. Captions and transcripts do not grant rights to music, video, or other material used in a stream. Before broadcasting, confirm you have permission to use the content and understand the platform’s copyright rules. Do not assume that adding captions changes whether a stream complies with those rules.
Keep the stream running while captions do their job
Transcription tools handle words; they do not by themselves keep an always-on YouTube video stream running. If your goal is a 24/7 YouTube stream of uploaded recordings, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It plays uploaded videos, not a live camera feed, and streams to YouTube only.
Or let it run in the cloud
With StreamNeo, your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. Each slot supports the video as uploaded up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, without re-encoding or quality tiers. It can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, once per account. The monthly option is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo supports UPI and cards in India, and card checkout worldwide.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does OBS add captions on its own?
No. OBS needs a caption plugin, browser source, or captured caption view to put recognized text into the composed stream.
Will YouTube automatic live captions translate for international viewers?
Do not assume so. A Subanana guide dated July 31, 2026 describes YouTube Live automatic captions as English-only in normal-latency mode; check YouTube’s current settings for your stream.
