The report card says Apple TV announced a price increase to $14.99 on August 29, 2026, after its listed $12.99 figure had been set. Disney+ and Hulu’s official help-center results indicated that new U.S. subscription prices took effect September 23, 2026, with some existing subscribers’ changes occurring on or after October 21. Choose by what you actually watch
For premium originals and films
HBO Max is Tom’s Guide’s overall pick, with the comparison pointing to HBO originals and Warner Bros. films. That makes it a candidate if those titles are central to your viewing. Check the specific plan and current catalog: an overall editorial recommendation does not mean every title is available in every region or tier.
For a lower entry price and NBC-related programming
Peacock is the guide’s value selection. It highlights classic shows, sports, and next-day NBC and Bravo episodes. “Value” depends on whether those programs matter to your household and which plan provides the features you want; a low starting price alone does not establish the best deal.

For live channels
Sling TV is the guide’s live-TV choice and is described as a cable alternative. Compare the channels and live programming in the current offer with the channels you would otherwise pay for. Regional availability and rights matter, and the comparison does not establish that any one lineup fits every market.

Work out the real monthly cost
Streaming costs are easy to underestimate when several subscriptions accumulate. Tom’s Guide reported that more than 35% of its survey respondents said they paid more than $60 per month for streaming. The survey was held in June 2026; the source text does not give its sample size or methodology, so this is a finding about those respondents, not an estimate for all U.S. households.
- List the shows, films, and sports you need. Start with specific titles, teams, leagues, or channels rather than subscribing based on a service’s general reputation.
- Check current plan details. Compare the actual monthly price, ads, video quality, simultaneous stream allowance, download rules, and regional availability. A service name does not identify one uniform set of features.
- Calculate the combined cost. Add the subscriptions you expect to keep at the same time, including any membership required for an apparent included service. Prime Video’s listed starting figure, for example, was tied to a $14.99-per-month Amazon Prime membership in the September report card.
- Recheck before paying. Prices change frequently. Tom’s Guide’s September report card said every service it graded had raised prices in the preceding 12 months; treat its figures as historical snapshots and verify the checkout price directly with the provider.
When a bundle makes sense—and what to verify
The Hulu Help Center describes a Disney+, Hulu, and HBO Max bundle with two plan options, but the accessible page information does not establish full pricing. A bundle may simplify subscriptions, but it does not make the services’ rules identical. The Help Center cautions that stream counts, video quality, geographic limits, downloads, and other functionality vary by service.

Before choosing a bundle, verify which plan of each service is included, whether the shows you want are available in your region, and whether the stream and download limits work for your household. Compare the bundle’s actual price with the services and features you would otherwise buy separately.

The comparison guide lists Fire TV as a supported platform for HBO Max, Peacock, Hulu, and Sling TV. If your television already runs the apps you need, that does not establish a reason to buy a streaming stick. A Fire TV device may be useful if your TV lacks the necessary apps, but the available comparison does not establish that a particular model is required or confirm current model compatibility. Check the device and service requirements before purchasing.

Why the rankings and prices can go stale
Streaming catalogs, sports rights, regional access, and plan features are volatile. Tom’s Guide’s September 2026 report card compared services on price, library, originals, live content, and other features; it named HBO Max as its overall recommendation and said no interface in its comparison scored above a B. Those are the outlet’s assessments, not universal measures of catalog quality or usability.
Use rankings to narrow your choices, then decide from the titles and features you can actually access at the current price. A service that is a strong fit for one household may offer little value to another, even when both pay the same monthly fee.
